ABSTRACT: Archaeological find maps can be created quickly and easily with gvSIG 2.2. This step-by-step introduction aims to familiarise those new to GIS with the Programme. Each individual stage of the process, from the preliminary setup to the export of finished maps, is explained through a short description and illustrated with a screenshot. Additional Information is included about the coordinate system and the methods of projecting the earth's surface.
The introduction is written in German. The installation and menu structure of gvSIG 2.2. are independent of the language selected, however, and any language problems can be overcome through the help of the numerous screenshots.
ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Mit gvSIG 2.2 können mühelos archäologische Fundkarten erstellt werden. Mit dieser Schritt-für-Schritt Anleitung soll der unerfahrene GIS-Benutzer eine Einführung in den Umgang mit diesem Programm erhalten. Von der Einstellung bis zum Kartenexport wird jeder Arbeitsprozeß einzeln erklärt, mit einer kurzen Beschreibung versehen und einem screenshot illustriert. Daneben gibt es allgemeine Informationen über Koordiantensysteme und Projektionen der Erdoberfläche.
Die Kurzanleitung ist in deutscher Sprache geschrieben. Aufbau und Menüstruktur von gvSIG 2.2 sind aber unabhängig von der gewählten Sprache, so können mit Hilfe der zahlreichen screenshots Sprachbarrieren überwunden werden.

This paper is the first of two about engravings on the menhir du Paly, which is also known as la Pierre Droite and la Pierre du Paly, and an adjacent quartzite slab. It focuses on doing two things. The first is describing a pecked frieze, which the author found in a cave called Butte de Châtillon 5. The Neolithic panel includes four axes whose shafts hook towards the back of their blades just like the shafts of haches à crosses on stelae in Brittany. But the pair of axes at the center of the top row are astonishing both because they are the only ones that have ever been found upside-down, and because the handle of the central one is surmounted by the kind of U-shaped motif, which is usually interpreted in local Neolithic iconography as being a representation of horns or the necklace of a “goddess”. This article reveals the existence of a huge, plumed, Neolithic face on a stela at Le Closeau, Nanteau-sur-Essonne, France. It concludes, on the basis of a comparison of statue-menhirs from Guernsey to Switzerland and other evidence, that the Closeau stela might be one of the oldest engraved Neolithic monuments known in France.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related geospatial software have been increasingly employed in archaeological research and practice during the last twenty years. They have transcended their initial use in territory studies to become part of more theoretically conscious landscape and on-site focused analyses and nowadays are routinely used in most archaeological projects. GIS analysts, rather than using a single piece of software, employ combinations of them according to their knowledge, the specific needs of the project and the availability of software. However, most professional archaeologists using GIS tend to use proprietary software due to several reasons: its assumed ease of use, their wider availability in universities and research centres, their compatibility with mainstream proprietary operating systems (also standard in public institutions), the existence of courses, books, and seminars on the use of these packages and/or the provision of technical support. While some of these reasons are still valid, during the last years open source GIS software has become more accessible, secure and compatible and many efforts have been directed towards the provision of adequate tutorials, courses and “help” files, resulting in their increased use in archaeological applications.
In this paper it is argued that GIS open source software offers, not just a valid but, in some cases, a better alternative to the use of proprietary packages. After a brief overview of the archaeological use and applicability of GIS and other geospatial software, different open source packages are presented and their characteristics outlined and compared to those of widely employed proprietary software. It is concluded that the implementation of non-proprietary geospatial software can cover most of the needs of both professional archaeologists and researchers reducing costs without compromising in strength, security, ease of use and training potential, traditionally attributed to most commercial software.

Geographical Information Systems has become an essential technology in archaeology, making it possible to link text and spatial data, store, interrogate and present large amounts of information. Until relatively recently most GIS software and data has been prohibitively expensive for archaeologists and researchers working outside of well-financed institutions or large consultancies. However, ongoing improvements in open source GIS software and the increasing availability of free datasets means that, with some modest investment of time, archaeologists can use powerful software and free data to significantly enhance their research, presentations and publications. This article introduces the open source software packages GRASS GIS, Quantum GIS, SAGA GIS and gvSIG, all freely available on the Web, as well as free Irish and international datasets and examples of how these may be used by archaeologists.

The present paper is based on the finds of Sopot and early Lengyel cultures from the sites of Sormás–Mántai-dűlő and Sormás–Török-földek: import ceramic wares are known from the later Phase III of the Zselíz culture, the Koronevo culture, the Vinča culture, and the Butmir culture, as well as their influences at Mántai-dűlő. At Török-földek, import finds from the Korenovo and Butmir cultures were unearthed. The strongest foreign influence can be observed from the West Balkan Butmir culture, which appears at various levels. The mutual contacts between the formative phases of the Sopot and Lengyel cultures are primarily important from a chronological point of view, the evidence of which is also supported by recent finds from other sites. The strong southern and south-western influences felt at both sites are backed by the provenience analyses of the stone material, which also complement this aspect, pointing out such directions that cannot be traced on the basis of the pottery.
