World War II

After the fall of Java during the early days of the Second World War in the Pacific, personnel from the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force were evacuated to Australia. In April 1942 a composite unit of Dutch, Indonesian, and Australian personnel – No. 18 (NEI) Squadron, RAAF – was formed to conduct operations out of the Northern Territory. This poster will discuss the fates of six B-25 Mitchell bombers that were wrecked while in the service of the squadron. It will look at the ways state and territory heritage bodies have dealt with these sites in the past, while also examining the need to protect what remains both now and in the future.

Seit der Wende haben sich Kriegs'kinder' vermehrt öffentlich über ihre Erlebnisse im Dritten Reich geäußert, die auch heute noch vielen Zeitzeugen unvergesslich sind. Wie aber dachte die junge Generation der Ära Adenauer über die damals noch so nahe Zeit des Hitlerregimes, der Besatzungszeit und der Gründungsphase der alten Bundesrepublik, die sie miterlebt hatten? Tausende von Schulaufsätzen des Hagener Roeßler Archivs zeigen, dass diese jüngsten Kriegskinder sich als Generation erfanden, um ihre Identität in der westdeutschen Nachkriegsgesellschaft zu bestimmen. Die oft traumatischen Erfahrungen der 40er Jahre werden vielfach als Erfolgsgeschichte erzählt, um sie in die eigene Lebensgeschichte integrieren zu können. Die vorherrschenden Themen und Diskurse nehmen Kerngedanken vorweg, die Jahrzehnte bundesdeutsche 'Vergangenheitsbewältigung' prägen sollten.

Tadeusz Ignacy Rylski „Ostoja”, „Tytus” (1904–1983) był funkcjonariuszem Policji Państwowej, żołnierzem Wojska Polskiego i Armii Krajowej. Całe życie pracował jako fotograf, dokumentując ważne wydarzenia z II wojny światowej i lat powojennych. Był aktywnym działaczem rzemieślniczym – Okręgowego Związku Cechów Rzemieślniczych w Kielcach i Izby Rzemieślniczej w Kielcach. Od 1947 roku należał do Stronnictwa Demokratycznego, pełniąc różne funkcje na szczeblu lokalnym jak i wojewódzkim.

Tadeusz Ignacy Rylski „Ostoja”, „Tytus” (1904–1983) was an officer of the National Police, a soldier of the Polish Army and the Home Army. He worked all his life as a photographer, documenting important events from World War II as well as those taking place in post-war years. He was an active craft activist associated with the Okręgowy Związek Cechów Rzemieślniczych in Kielce and Izba Rzemieślnicza in Kielce. As a member of the Alliance of Democrats since 1947, he was performing various functions at both local and provincial level.

Такви догађаји се у стручној литератури називају гранични догађаји или догађаји повлашћеног садржаја. Колектив, суочен са могућношћу сопственог нестанка, у хамлетовској дилеми, преиспитује теме и догађаје који су темељно утицали на његов историјски развој и ставља их у континуитете разлога, смисла и суштине сопственог постојања. Преиспитивање је готово сталан процес.

This paper compares two schemes of agrarian transformation that occurred during World War Two in Libya and northeast Brazil, undertaken by the Italian fascist regime and US private and governmental officials respectively. Although developing different historical trajectories, these similar efforts aiming to convert desert and semi-arid areas into productive fields intertwined with military services and reflected colonial and post-colonial appropriations in the Global South. The article demonstrates how both Libya and Brazil represented militarised environments and contested spaces well beyond the WW2 timeframe and how the colonial expansion projects that preceded and resulted from WW2 combined military campaigns and mastery over nature. Our analysis builds upon Italian and US primary sources and scholarly publications in environmental history.

In 2018 archaeological fieldwork was carried out near the Amsterdam-Rhine chanel at the the Beatrix sluzecomplex in Nieuwegein in the central Netherlands .  In this erea several pillboxes and other defensive structures dating from the second World war were excacated.  The exavations shed light on low the Dutch armee prepared itself for the invasion of may 1940 and how the defensive structures were reused by german troops  untill 1945. The area around pillbox Vreeswijk-Oost several artefacts were found that show how this pillbix was used.

This compilation explores the way how the German attack on Poland 80 years ago was perceived and captured by German Soldiers in diaries and photo albums. It looks at the first crimes which were committed at the beginning of WW II and at issues of remembrance and memorialization of the events.

Il testo ne descrive l'organizzazione, le dotazioni in armi, mezzi e uomini, gli ordini di battaglia, le tattiche, l'armamento e il relativo munizionamento, dalle origini nella grande guerra alla nascita della Panzerabwehrtruppe nella Reichswehr allo sviluppo dei Panzer Abwehr Kanone (PAK) della Wehrmacht e relativi trattori ruotati, semicingolati e cingolati al combattimento ravvicinato dei corazzati nemici ai semoventi controcarro, dai primi Panzerjäger I alla serie Marder ai Ferdinand/Elefant e Hornisse/Nashorn sino agli Jagdpanzer IV e Panzer IV/70, dagli Jagdpanther, Jagdpanzer 38 (t) e Jagdtiger, agli altri cingolati o ruotati dotati di pezzi PAK di serie, sperimentali o improvvisati, all’uso controcarro degli Sturmgeschütz III e IV ai mezzi di preda bellica, inclusi i semoventi Fiat-Ansaldo italiani. Il testo è completato da centinaia di fotografie in bianco e nero e a colori, in gran parte inedite, provenienti da archivi militari e di ricercatori storici e collezionisti italiani e stranieri, e da 33 dettagliati profili a colori concessi dalle Éditions Caraktère.
