In Renaissance Italy women played a more central role in providing health care than historians have thus far acknowledged. Women from all walks of life-from household caregivers and nurses to nuns working as apothecaries-drove the Italian medical economy. In convent pharmacies, pox hospitals, girls' shelters, and homes, women were practitioners and purveyors of knowledge about health and healing, making significant contributions to early modern medicine. Sharon Strocchia offers a wealth of new evidence about how illness was diagnosed and treated, whether by noblewomen living at court or poor nurses living in hospitals. She finds that women expanded on their roles as health care providers by participating in empirical work and the development of scientific knowledge. Nuns, in particular , were among the most prominent manufacturers and vendors of pharmaceutical products. Their experiments with materials and techniques added greatly to the era's understanding of medical care. Thanks to their excellence in medicine, urban Italian women had greater access to commerce than perhaps any other women in Europe. Forgotten Healers provides a more accurate picture of the pursuit of health in Renaissance Italy. More broadly, by emphasizing that the frontlines of medical care are often found in the household and other spaces thought of as female, Strocchia encourages us to rethink the history of medicine. Sharon T. Strocchia is Professor of History at Emory University. Her research focuses on the social and cultural history of Renaissance Italy, gender and sexuality in early modern Europe, and the history of health and medicine. Her most recent book, Nuns and Nunneries in Renaissance Florence, won the Marraro Prize for the best book on Italian history from the American Catholic Historical Association.

Mad women running on top of the mountains without the supervision of their husbands, ingestion of mind-altering concoctions, ecstatic nocturnal dancing to the rhythm of the frame drum, ritual sexuality, these and more are the ingredients composing the early worship of Dionysus.
This chapter examines the role of women in the Dionysian cult: Who were the maenads, what happened during their women-only rituals, but also what was the reaction of their contemporaries and which were the most accredited interpretations of contemporary scholars on their legendary legacy.

On Thursday October 31st at 5pm  Palazzo Torres in Rome will held the presentation of the book about the history of the female Confraternity of Sant'Anna in S. Pantaleo, created in 1640 by St Joseph Calasanz, the founder of the first Christian popular school in Europe and the Piarist Fathers.

Ce volume réunit douze contributions de spécialistes issus de différentes disciplines qui ont pour dénominateur commun le fait de considérer l’objet-livre comme un véritable prisme, capable à la fois d’absorber et de réfracter le savoir aussi bien que de distinguer les nuances de son spectre afin d’en permettre l’étude détaillée et approfondie.

Les essais sont réunis dans quatre sections qui explorent chacune un problème particulier. La première revient sur la primauté de l’auteur sur l’artiste et de l’écrit sur l’image. La deuxième se focalise sur les paramètres qui permettent la survivance du livre après ses premiers lecteurs. La troisième section s’intéresse aux femmes du Moyen Âge et de la Renaissance qui auraient eu un certain rapport à la culture livresque. La dernière section revient enfin sur la question du rapport entre manuscrit et livre imprimé pour étudier l’effet du support sur le texte et sur sa survivance.

La richesse de cet ensemble d’études réside dans les perspectives nouvelles apportées à la discipline de l’histoire du livre. Ainsi les spécialistes du livre y trouveront les possibilités d’une meilleure compréhension du rôle des manuscrits et des livres à une époque importante, mais malheureusement trop souvent négligée. De même, les spécialistes de la littérature reconnaîtront à ce recueil le mérite de replacer des œuvres dans leur contexte intellectuel, culturel et commercial en prenant en considération les intérêts et les ambitions qui ont pu pousser une communauté à produire, promouvoir et préserver certains textes.

This study examines the role of visual print culture and popular printed artefacts in articulating, reflecting and disseminating dominant notions of national identity in Malaysia in the fifty years of its history as an independent nation (1957-2007) through three case studies – print advertisements, Wanita women’s magazine, and Lat’s cartoons.
This study is not an attempt to define the meaning or essence of Malaysian identity. On the contrary, it seeks to emphasise the constructed nature of national identity in Malaysia, by demonstrating how it has been dominated by hegemonic majoritarian cultural discourses at different eras and fluidly shaped by changing historical factors.
The project entitled Chronicling Malay/sian Identity as an allusion to the complex equations of racial politics, which direct and define the whole ambit of national culture in the country.
It aims to firstly establish the significance of visual culture and popular print media in the construction of Malaysian national identity, and secondly, to chronicle an undocumented and under-studied history of Malaysian national identity through the medium of visual print media.

Murathan Mungan, Doğu ve Batı masallarını metinlerarası ilişkilerle inceleyip, onları özelleştirerek okuyucuya sunar. M. Mungan’ın Kırk Oda adlı eserinde mit, masal ve arketipleri çözümleyip onları tekrardan yorumladığını görüyoruz. Geleneksel anlatılarla kurulan bu bağ, bir anlamda içinde yaşanılan coğrafyanın sunduğu fırsatların ve kültürel zenginliğin değerlendirilmesidir. Mungan’ın bu dönüşümü gerçekleştirmekteki amacı, bugün de alttan alta sürdüğünü düşündüğü arketiplerle okurun yüzleşmesini sağlamaktır. Zaman içinde dönüşerek günümüze kadar gelen bu motiflerin karşılık geldiği toplumsal dinamikleri sorgulayan yazar, böylece toplumsal evrime de ışık tutar.
Kırk Oda’da Pamuk Prenses’i yedi cücesiz bırakarak, cam ayakkabıyı Külkedisine de oldurmayarak, okurun beklentisini, mutlu sonları parçalayarak tekdüze sonlara koşullanmışlığımıza darbe vurur. Kırk Oda’daki öykülerden bazıları evrensel masalların modernize edilmiş halleridir: “Yedi Cücesi Olmayan Bir Pamuk Prenses”, “Zamanımızın Bir Külkedisi” ve “Yüzyıllık Uyuyan Güzel” gibi. Evrensel masallar yeniden üretilir.. Mungan, cinsiyetçi ideolojiyle ödeşmenin savaşını vermiş birisidir,  kadın ya da erkek ideolojisiyle özdeş bir ilişki yaşamadığı için olaylara farklı bir açıyla bakabilir. Toplumsal rollerin, toplumsal dayatmaların insanların önlerinde duran en büyük engel olduğunu bize eserlerinde göstermiştir. Mungan’ın Kırk Oda adlı eseri Grimm Kardeşler- Külkedisi adlı orijinal eseri ile metinlerarası ilişki kurularak incelenmeye çalışılmıştır.

A tanulmányokban visszaköszön az a szellemiség, amely a kora újkort nem a válság, hanem az értékmentés és az új értékek megszületésének idõszakaként értelmezi. Az útkeresés, a jövõre való felkészülés kapott hangsúlyt a korszak politikai, gazdasági és társadalmi életében, nagy formátumú államférfiak, politikusok, mûvelt hivatalnokok, polgárok és mûvészek tervezték a háborúba kényszerült ország jövõjét. A több mint félszáz tanulmány új kutatási eredmények-re alapozva rajzolja meg ezt az igen nehéz, de rendkívül fontos kort, a mûvészet, tudomány és mesterség egységében, éppen úgy, ahogy azt R. Várkonyi Ágnes is hirdette.

En 1629, María Ana de Austria se casó con su primo, el futuro emperador Fernando III, y su hermano Felipe IV le despidió instruyéndola para que fuera su «mayor embajadora» en la corte imperial. Así nació un orden político muy original: el Rey Católico mantenía un embajador ordinario y extraordinario en Viena, pero este papel mediador fue reforzado por la presencia de María Ana y su casa. Aquí se analiza el desarrollo de ambos espacios de comunicación política desde dos ángulos distintos: primero, el impacto de una casa real española en Viena, su grado de integración y de influencia social, espiritual y artística. Segundo, se explora el rol individual de la emperatriz María Ana como consejera de su marido y mediadora de sus parientes españoles. Una cuestión final asalta: ¿actuó ella como portavoz de Felipe IV o como una figura independiente?

In this chapter, we examine the presidential candidacy of Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm. We argue Shirley Chisholm’s political campaign discourse is one example in a small sample of Black female public [and private] figures who make up what we call a womanist rhetorical genre. We focus our analysis on Chisholm’s words through her campaign announcement speech and her text Unbought and Unbossed. We also examine other texts, journals, and reports to augment our claims and fully explore the rhetorical legacy of political communication of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm.
