Traditional Fisheries

The reluctance by DFO decision makers to hear ISFAs concerns runs deeper than just the federal waters of the Federal Minister of Fisheries office. DFO also blocked the ISFA from a chance to present at the area 12 snow crab advisory meeting held in Moncton, NB.

Se presenta unas breves notas sobre el estudio de estructuras de pesca en la ría de Bílbao, en la parte más alta de la misma, usadas para la pesca de angulas. Se hace una documentación de mínimos de estas estructuras que creemos representan una tradición pesquera desde la Edad Media y que en  una zona tan industrializada como la ría de Bilbao aún se conservan, si bien muchas de ellas son de construcción reciente.

A short report is presented about the baby eel fish weirs, which are placed on the furthest zone of the estuary of Bilbao. It is believed that such structures shown a tradition going back to the Middle Ages, although the ones presented here have been built recently. However, they are still used in such an indutrialised river as the Bilbao one.

Holbox Island is a contemporary hotspot for global tourism. Here, long-term coastal exploitation and increasing anthropogenic activities threaten coastal habitat sand resources. The impact of these activities is exacerbated by the lack of a management plan for the past 24 years, until October 2018. An interdisciplinary approach that integrates fishers’ traditional knowledge was used to determine how small-scale fisheries (SSF) exploitation contributed to the decline of resources over time. Open interviews with community members and surveys of fishers’ perspectives on fisheries overexploitation and practices as well as knowledge of fishing sites were collected. Over one hundred fishing sites were documented that were once very productive. Furthermore, over 40 species were highly fished (e.g., Carcharhinidae, Shpyrnidae, Pristidae, Cheloniidae) over the past 50 years. Survey results allowed for the construction of maps with base line information of coastal exploitation. Additional data from archaeozoological remains (n= 545)  of aquatic fauna identified 33 families of exploited taxa, of which finfish (e.g., Haemulidaea, Ariidae, Serranidae), sharks (e.g., Carcharhinidae), and sea turtles were the most abundant. Fishers and literature sources (n= 50) document Holbox’s contemporary issues, including overfishing, illegalfishing, and accelerated tourism development. These types of data (fishers’ perspectives, interdisciplinary literature, and archaeozoological data) were combined using historical ecology technique sand geospatial tools to obtain novel baseline information on SSF exploitation. This information is essential for conservation managers and scientists to meet the management needs of Holbox’s natural and social capital, which can assure the future provision of coastal ecosystem services to humans.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis modal sosial yang ada pada tradisi marak (menangkap ikan di sungai) yang telah berlangsung ratusan tahun di Kampung Naga, Tasikmalaya serta implementasinya dengan pengelolaan ekosistem Sungai Ciwulan yang berada disisi lokasi Kampung Naga. Metode penelitian yang digunakan berupa deskriptif kualitatif.  Pengambilan data dilakukan bulan April-Mei 2018 dengan observasi langsung ke lokasi Kampung Naga dan wawancara mendalam terhadap informan melalui teknik purposive sampling. Informan yang diwawancarai terdiri dari aparatur pemerintahan, tokoh adat dan tokoh masyarakat. Hasil temuan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat modal sosial berupa kepercayaan (trust), norma (norms) dan jaringan sosial (social networking). Implementasi modal sosial pada tradisi marak yang berhubungan dengan pengelolaan ekosistem Sungai Ciwulan berupa pelaksanaan marak yang hanya dilakukan satu kali dalam setahun, adanya pengaturan zonasi, pembersihan sungai sebelum pelaksanaan serta pelarangan penggunaan bom dan racun.

Peru’s fisheries are in crisis as overfishing and ecological changes produce dramatic fluctuations in fish stocks. To address this crisis, government officials have claimed that fishers need to become responsible producers who create economic advantages by taking better care of the ocean ecologies they exploit.

In Coastal Lives, Maximilian Viatori and Héctor Bombiella argue that this has not made Peru’s fisheries more sustainable. Through a fine-grained ethnographic and historical account of Lima’s fisheries, the authors reveal that new government regimes of entrepreneurial agency have placed overwhelming burdens on the city’s impoverished artisanal fishers to demonstrate that they are responsible producers and to create failures that can be used to justify closing these fishers’ traditional use areas and denying their historically sanctioned rights. The result is a critical examination of how neoliberalized visions of nature and individual responsibility work to normalize the dispossessions that have enabled ongoing capital accumulation at the cost of growing social dislocations and ecological degradation.

The authors’ innovative approach to the politics of constructing and degrading coastal lives will interest a wide range of scholars in cultural anthropology, environmental humanities, and Latin American studies, as well as policymakers and anyone concerned with inequality, global food systems, and multispecies ecologies.

The increased recognition of the multiplicity of roles played by women in, and their crucial contributions to, the fisheries sector exists in stark contrast with the low presence of women in fisherfolk organizations around the globe, and the lack of access to decision-making positions in many formal fisheries-related organizations. This paper summarizes analyses of a global literature review on women in fisherfolk organizations. The aim of the study was to identify positive examples and lessons learned by pointing to the drivers – as well as the enablers and entities identified in the literature – that have a key role in fostering increased women’s participation and leadership in collective action in fisheries. State institutions, social movements and civil society organizations, development and conservation projects, religious movements, academia, endogenous mobilization, charismatic individuals and coincidences have been identified as the key enablers of women’s participation in collective action. Dwindling resources and the need to secure management roles, modernization, the allocation of fishing rights, economic changes, family welfare and women’s rights, are the main drivers identified by the authors as catalysers of women’s engagement in collective action. Finally, the paper identifies some of the barriers faced by women to gain equal access to organizations and decision-making. Although more research on the topic is required, there seems to be consensus on the positive effects for women arising from their engagement in modes of collective action.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui persepsi nelayan artisanal Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur, khususnya nelayan Tanjung Luar dan Pulau Maringkik terhadap isu konservasi hiu dan pari terkait beberapa jenis hiu dan pari yang telah masuk daftar Appendik II CITES. Survei dilakukan pada bulan September dan November 2016. Penelitian ini tergolong penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik wawancara menggunakan kuesioner dengan 30 responden ditentukan secara purposif. Hasil menunjukkan sebanyak 56,67% responden telah mengetahui status perlindungan hiu dan pari yang diduga terkait sosialisasi yang telah dilakukan (63,33% responden). Sikap responden terkait keberadaan peraturan hiu dan pari menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar (56,67%) menerima peraturan tersebut, 23,33% menolak dan 20,00% masih ragu-ragu. Terkait penerapan peraturan hiu dan pari, 80% responden menyatakan tidak terlalu setuju jika dilakukan pelarangan penuh bagi penangkapan hiu dan pari, dan juga 66,67% responden tidak setuju terhadap pelarangan terbatas. Hal tersebut terkait hiu dan pari yang menjadi target tangkapan utama. Persepsi nelayan Tanjung Luar, Lombok Timur terhadap isu konservasi hiu dan pari secara umum telah mulai terbangun dengan baik sejak adanya sosialisasi peraturan terkait hiu dan pari, namun upaya penyadartahuan bahwa hiu dan pari dapat punah masih perlu dibangun.

Across the state of Gujarat, economic process put in motion since the ‘70s have impacted the fishing community and their livelihood. Based on fieldwork across the coast, the study, assesses the impacts of industrial development on the fishing community. It found that both industrial and fisheries policy, oriented towards export and global seafood regimes have had adverse impacts on coastal ecology and the fishing community.

Section One, focuses on the growth of industrialisation, current industrial patterns, the parallel changes in the demographic of the traditional fishing community and changing pattern of fisheries since the Eighties.

Section Two, is based on field work in four fishing villages of South Gujarat, one fishing harbour of the Saurashtra Coast and four fishing villages across the district of Kutch. It shows that large-scale pollution due to industrialisation has severely affected coastal ecology and degraded coastal areas. It has led to large-scale depletion of marine resources. The fishing community has been severely impacted – leading to their migration and displacement. Interviews also revealed changing livelihood patterns across the coast, changing access of the community to the Commons, as well as the existing practices of debt bondge and militarisation in the Kutch region.
