Thirty Years' War

The conference sets its focus on the cultural and artistic effects and consequences of the two major conflicts of the XVII c. in Central Europe – the Thirty Years‘ War and the Northern Wars, intertwined by the powers and personalities involved and influenced by each other. Especially the German territories of the Holy Roman Empire (including Bohemia) and Poland were confronted with a huge extent of destruction, looting, migration and targeted theft of art and culture. The topics are military architecture, artistic representation in war, political iconography, war and peace as a theme of art, protagonists and victims, roles and fates, paths of artlootings and processes of cultural transfer.

Der „Dreißigjährige Krieg” giIt aIs eines der dunkelsten Kapitel in der Geschichte der Menschheit. Was als Kampf um die religiöse und machtpolitische Hegemonie in Böhmen und im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation begonnen hatte, endete in einer Katastrophe für ganz Mitteleuropa.

Seinen Anfang nahm der Krieg mit dem „Prager Fenstersturz” vom 23. Mai 1618, dem eine offene Rebellion der protestantischen böhmischen Stände gegen den Kaiser folgte. Durch die Ereignisse des Jahres 1619 — erwähnt seien hier Iediglich die „Sturmpetition“ evangelischer Adeliger bei Ferdinand II. in Wien sowie die schweren Kämpfe und Devastierungen im nördlichen Niederösterreich — wurde das habsburgische Kernland Niederösterreich endgültig in das Ringen zwischen katholischem Herrscherhaus und protestantischer Ständeopposition hineingezogen. Diese Auseinandersetzung sollte erst mit der Schlacht am Weißen Berg von 1620 ihr (vorläufiges) Ende finden, als die Katholische Liga den Sieg gegen die böhmischen Stände unter ihrem „Winterkönig” Friedrich von der Pfalz davontrug.

Die Ereignisse von 1619 bilden den Anlass dafür, sich 400 Jahre später im Rahmen einer Tagung den Anfängen des Dreißigjährigen Krieges und seinen Auswirkungen auf dem Gebiet des heutigen Niederösterreichs zu widmen.

Dans l'imaginaire collectif la propagande est née au XXe siècle et demeure le fruit des régimes nazi et stalinien. Cependant celle-ci est déjà bien ancrée à l'époque moderne et plus particulièrement durant la guerre de Trente Ans, où les affrontements, notamment confessionnels, donnent lieu à une propagande très intense. Dans cet article nous allons étudier plus particulièrement la propagande dans la République de Strasbourg liée à la mort du roi de Suède Gustave II Adolphe en 1632.

In the collective imagination propaganda was born in the 20th century, and remains the fruit of Nazi and Stalinist regimes. However it is already well anchored in modern times and especially during the Thirty Years' War, where clashes, especially religious, give rise to a very intense propaganda. In this article we will study more particularly the propaganda in the Republic of Strasbourg linked to the death of the King of Sweden Gustav II Adolph in 1632.

This paper gives an overview of the emergence and development of mobile light field artillery in selected European countries during the first half of the Thirty Years' War. In the final part of the paper, the importance of the collection of four field bronze cannons from the period of the Thirty Years' War at the Opočno Castle in East Bohemia is also discussed.

This essay looks to trace a panorama of the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War, whose stage was the Holy Roman Empire. Simultaneous to the bloody religious conflicts, Europe knew the meaning of the economic crises that occurred in the continent at this moment of transition for the sprouting of the modern State.

In 1632 the Swedish army of Gustavus Adolphus meets with the Imperial German-Austrian army at Lützen. In the battle, Gustavus Adolphus falls, alongside thousands of his soldiers. Now archaeologists have examined a mass grave with  47 individuals, who all died during the battle, showing the brutality of the  Thirty Years War.

Resumen: En este trabajo pretendemos incidir en las circunstancias que llevaron a la poca colaboración de las potencias europeas para con la República de Venecia en su enfrentamiento con el Imperio Otomano por la isla de Creta. Un conflicto iniciado por Ibrahim I en las postrimerías de la Guerra de los Treinta Años aprovechando, precisamente, la desunión existente entre los príncipes cristianos. Atrás quedaban los tiempos en que, de forma coordinada, se había combatido al turco en Lepanto. La gran guerra europea supuso un punto de inflexión y el inicio de un nuevo ordenamiento en el continente por el que Francia arrebataría la hegemonía a la Monarquía Hispánica.
Este y otros argumentos, como la firma de tratados de paz con el Gran Turco o la incapacidad de la Santa Sede para seguir liderando el bando católico, deben ser tenidos en cuenta para entender la aparente extinción del espíritu de cruzada y la poca atención prestada a la guerra turco-veneciana. El conflicto se saldaría con la pérdida de un enclave vital en el corazón del Mediterráneo que, en la práctica, dejaba al turco las puertas abiertas para continuar su avance hacia la Europa occidental.

Abstract: At this short essay, we will focus on the circumstances that led to a lack of cooperation of the European monarchies with the Republic of Venice on its bloody confrontation with the Ottoman Empire over the island of Crete. A war initiated by Ibrahim I in the aftermath of the Thirty Years War, taking advantage of the disunity between the Christian powers. The days when the Ottomans had been combated in Lepanto seemed to be gone. The big war was a turning point and the beginning of a new order in Europe, by which France would snatch the hegemony to the Hispanic Monarchy.
This and other arguments, such as the peace treaties with the Sultan or the inability of the Holy See to maintain the leadership of the Catholic side, must be taken into account to understand the ostensible extinction of the spirit of crusade and the lack of attention paid to the Turkish-Venetian conflict.As a result, one of the vital enclaves of the Mediterranean sea was lost, leaving an open door to the Ottomans to continue their advance towards Western Europe.

Many independent sources from Brussels, Simancas and Venice, presented during the lecture, show repeatedly the enormous influence Schlick had wielded on the emperor and strategic matters around the year 1640. In addition to these findings, other sources, also presented during the lecture, reveal that Ferdinand deliberately empowered Schlick and/or made use of the resourceful network he possessed, delegating to him the role of political negotiator and communicator of unfavourable news, thereby preserving his royal image and increasing his room for manoeuvre. Moreover, this would make the two chief ministers, Trauttmansdorff and Schlick, competitors, thus driving them to improve their performance and weakening their influence.
