The relationship between word and image, the mnemonic significance of materials as well as the implications of spatial theory in relation to contemporary art practice

Scholars from diverse disciplines have proposed that reading fiction improves intersubjective capacities. Experiments have yielded mixed evidence that reading literary fiction improves performance on the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, a test of Theory of Mind. Three preregistered experiments revealed mixed results. Applying the " small telescopes " method developed by Simonsohn revealed two uninformative failures to replicate and one successful replication. On a measure of the importance of intentions to moral judgments, results were more mixed, with one significant effect in the expected direction, one non-significant effect, and one significant effect in the unexpected direction. In addition, two experiments yielded support for the exploratory but preregistered hypothesis that characters in popular fiction are perceived as more predictable and stereotypic than those in literary fiction. These findings help clarify the sociocognitive effects of reading literary fiction and refine questions for future research.

El presente artículo se propone analizar los escritos de Jules Champfleury con el propósito de poner en evidencia su pensamiento en torno a las artes visuales, ejemplificando en la pintura de Gustave Courbet y de los hermanos Le Nain. Este, sostenemos, se encuentra de manera dispersa en sus escritos novelescos y cuentos y no como crítica de arte propiamente tal, demostrando que, contrario a las propias declaraciones del escritor, sí tenía una idea clara sobre lo que significaba este movimiento, aunque muy diferente de aquella de sus contemporáneos. El realismo para él fue la reconquista de la naturaleza y el método para llevarla a cabo fue la pura materialidad y naturalidad de la pintura, muy lejana de aquel realismo social de Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, que le valió ser el más cercano a las ideas estéticas de Courbet y a ser visto como el verdadero portavoz del movimiento.

Non-literate cultures depend on their memories to store all the information on which their survival depends, both physically and culturally. They effectively memorise entire field guides to the thousands of species of flora and fauna along with navigational charts, genealogies, astronomy, history, geology and the ethics and laws by which they live. How do they manage to remember so much information when they are dependent on the same fallible memory as you and me?

This essay will explain the mechanisms by which indigenous cultures know their world and how specific information can be remembered accurately over millennia.

The memory methods in question declined in use as literacy made them seem redundant in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, but this essay will argue that we have lost a valuable skill, just as Socrates predicted we would. In the last part of the essay, ways are suggested of reinstating oral technologies alongside literacy, thereby providing a powerful platform for lifelong learning.

Als Druckersignets (Druckerzeichen, printers‘ marks) bezeichnet man die Werbe- und Herkunftsmarken von Buchdruckern und Verlegern, die im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert ihre größte Blüte erlebten, doch auch heute noch in reduzierter Form von den Verlagshäusern gepflegt werden. Druckerzeichen entstanden gemeinsam mit dem Buchdruck; sie markieren einen zentralen Moment der Mediengeschichte und den Anfang der Massenwerbung. Neue technische Verfahren, die Möglichkeit von Bild- und Textdruck, das Interesse an der Zurschaustellung von Bildungswissen sowie die beständige Aktualisierung und Rekombination von Wissensbeständen gestalteten ihre Entwicklung höchst vielfältig, wobei auch die ökonomische Perspektive stets ihren Einfluss geltend machte. Eine Flut von Druckerzeichen überschwemmte im 16. Jahrhundert Europa und fand über die Sprachgrenzen hinweg tausendfach in die Buchhandlungen, Bibliotheken und Haushalte Eingang. Sie verbanden sich mit dem anschwellenden Strom der Emblematik, bis sie gegen Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts in der Masse des visuellen Angebots untergingen. In den letzten Jahren sind in vielen Ländern Europas Bestrebungen entstanden, diesen Schatz zu erfassen und in seiner vielfältigen Vernetzung für die Erforschung der Frühen Neuzeit nutzbar zu machen. Von großer Bedeutung sind hier einerseits neue Katalogisierungsansätze innerhalb des Bibliothekswesens, die danach streben, typographische, textliche und visuelle Informationen zusammenzuführen, andererseits die universitäre Frühneuzeitforschung, die sich vermehrt diesem reichen und vergleichsweise gering erschlossenen Quellenbestand zuwendet. Ziel des Artikels ist es, in den Bestand einzuführen und einige konkrete Forschungsfragen sowie deren Reichweite zu skizzieren.

This  article contemplates two clear goals: On the one  hand  I try to  project  a panoramic vision  of  what  we  call  “visual  literature”.  This  concept  is  extrinsically  associated  to  the  relationship between the ancient “Art of Memory” and the Medieval Western Literature. By doing this, I restore the basis of mnemonics that have been filtered in the medieval process of production of texts. On the other hand, this text tries to illustrate two examples of these rhetorical tools, namely the page and the room. These two literary images use respectively the page layout and the map of a place –in this case, a room– in  order  to  structure  the  contents  of  a  text.  Therefore,  they  take  part  in  the Ordinatio  and Dispositioprocesses,  going  thus  beyond  their  allegoric  and  metaphoric  nature.  They  were  actually  rhetorical machines that helped the memorization and composition of texts and pursued persuasive and meditative intentions, relevant aspects the current study of Literature cannot deny.
