Gillevinia straata Crocco 2006 es una forma de vida alienígena (esto es, extraterrestre) clasificada biológicamente en diciembre de 2006. La presente nota brinda precisiones acerca del concepto, su contexto y su significación biológica. Con esa acción clasificatoria se catalogó como ser vivo a la causa de las respuestas positivas a experimentos, expresamente diseñados para descubrir seres vivos, realizados en Marte en 1975 y 1976, cuando se suponía que en ese planeta no existía agua y era completamente seco. Reaccionóse con ello al descubrimiento de agua en Marte, que sólo muy poco antes había sido confirmado (en junio de 2006; luego se supo que Marte tiene tanto hielo de agua que, de haber sido líquido, cubriría todo el planeta con un océano de 35 metros de profundidad; en agosto de 2018 el radar evidenció bajo el hielo polar un lago atrapado de agua líquida, probablemente salobre, de 20 km de ancho 5 , y en junio de 2018 se verificó directamente 6 que unos 3500 millones de años atrás había existido materia orgánica en ese planeta), y al hallazgo de oscilaciones con duración de un día, llamadas ciclos circadianos, en los registros de la suelta o liberación de gases marcados ("Labeled release") en nueve experimentos que duraron hasta nueve meses cada uno.

Geospatial taxonomic data has very specific characteristics that need to be carefully presented in its visualization in order to differentiate and contrast the information. According to Buja et al. (1996), the reasons why it is important to develop taxonomy of geographical assessment for visualization are twofold: firstly, to choose a fitting visualization technique that answers the questions to the applied field adequately; secondly, to find gaps in the visualization field and as a result, help guide research into new techniques. Geospatial data gives a background knowledge of the different ecosystems of various places on Earth, especially the classification of diverse deserts of Asia. Despite their reputation for being dry empty wastelands, deserts are home to one-sixth of the world's population, and they cover over one-fifth of the Earth's landmass. The results are expressed through a software for scientific data analysis called Paleontological Statistics or also known as PAST. As a result, the outgroup or the farthest related desert is the Thar desert which has a diversified habitat and ecosystem accounting for its rich vegetat, human culture and animal life very much different from the other deserts. This must be because of its location near bodies of water and landforms as well. Nevertheless, the PAST software was very convenient to use in knowing the similarities and differences in terms of geospatial taxonomy on selected Asian Deserts.

PAST, short for Paleontological Statistics, is just one of the many computer-based technique in analyzing relationships. In this paper, the following species were used to analyze their respective  relationship to each other: Plasmodium falciparum, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Culex quinquifaciatus, Moringa oleifera, Bufo marinus, Giardia lamblia, Yersinia pestis, Ebola virus.
Giardia lamblia and Plasmodium falciparum are the organisms that show the highest similarity and distance index at 1. The only plant in the list was Moringa oleifera, that joins at 3.32 index. An additional of 10 various species were also made us subject for taxonomic studies. Analyses for these organisms were drawn and obtained. The software can also be used as an aid to compare and contrast the manually computed results to the computer generated one and see whether there is a distinction between sets of organisms under study.

For 40 years, paleontological studies of marine gastropods have suggested that species selection favors lineages with short-lived (lecithotrophic) larvae, which are less dispersive than long-lived (planktotrophic) larvae. Although lecithotrophs appeared to speciate more often and accumulate over time in some groups, lecithotrophy also increased extinction rates, and tests for state-dependent diversification were never performed. Molecular phylogenies of diverse groups instead suggested lecithotrophs accumulate without diversifying due to frequent, unidirectional character change. Although lecithotrophy has repeatedly originated in most phyla, no adult trait has been correlated with shifts in larval type. Thus, both the evolutionary origins of lecithotrophy and its consequences for patterns of species richness remain poorly understood.Here, we test hypothesized links between development mode and evolutionary rates using likelihood-based methods and a phylogeny of 202 species of gastropod molluscs in Sacoglossa, a clade of herbivorous sea slugs. Evolutionary quantitative-genetics modeling and stochastic character mapping supported 27 origins of lecithotrophy. Tests for correlated evolution revealed lecithotrophy evolved more often in lineages investing in extra-embryonic yolk, the first adult trait associated with shifts in development mode across a group. However, contrary to predictions from paleontological studies, species selection actually favored planktotrophy; most extant lecithotrophs originated through recent character change, and did not subsequently diversify. Increased offspring provisioning in planktotrophs thus favored shifts to short-lived larvae, which led to short-lived lineages over macroevolutionary time scales. These findings challenge long-standing assumptions about the effects of alternative life histories in the sea. Species selection can explain the long-term persistence of planktotrophy, the ancestral state in most clades, despite frequent transitions to lecithotrophy.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is a chemotherapeutic agent used for treatment of different cancers and its clinical usage is hindered by the oxidative injury-related cardiotoxicity. This work aims to declare if the harmful effects of DOX on heart can be alleviated with the use of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) or L-carnitine. The study was performed on seventy two female Wistar albino rats divided into six groups, 12 animals each: Control group; DOX group (10mg/kg); CoQ10 group (200mg/kg); L-carnitine group (100mg/kg); DOX+CoQ10 group; DOX+L-carnitine group. CoQ10 and L-carnitine treatment orally started 5days before a single dose of 10mg/kg DOX that injected intraperitoneally (IP) then the treatment continued for 10days. At the end of the study, serum biochemical parameters of cardiac damage, oxidative stress indices, and histopathological changes were investigated. CoQ10 or L-carnitine showed a noticeable effects in improving cardiac functions evidenced reducing serum enzymes as serum interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), leptin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), Cardiotrophin-1, Troponin-I and Troponin-T. Also, alleviate oxidative stress, decrease of cardiac Malondialdehyde (MDA), Nitric oxide (NO) and restoring cardiac reduced glutathione levels to normal levels. Both corrected the cardiac alterations histologically and ultrastructurally. With a visible improvements in α-SMA, vimentin and eNOS immunohistochemical markers. CoQ10 or L-carnitine supplementation improves the functional and structural integrity of the myocardium.

We present here a fast and flexible software–SimPhy–for the simulation of multiple gene families evolving under incomplete lineage sorting, gene duplication and loss, horizontal gene transfer—all three potentially leading to the species tree/gene tree discordance—and gene conversion. SimPhy implements a hierarchical phylogenetic model in which the evolution of species, locus and gene trees is governed by global and local parameters (e.g., genome-wide, species-specific, locus-specific), that can be fixed or be sampled from a priori statistical distributions. SimPhy also incorporates comprehensive models of substitution rate variation among lineages (uncorrelated relaxed clocks) and the capability of simulating partitioned nucleotide, codon and protein multilocus sequence alignments under a plethora of substitution models using the program INDELible. ABSTRACT A computer program package called MEGA has been developed for estimating evolutionary distances, reconstructing phylogenetic trees and computing basic statistical quantities from molecular data. It is written in C++ and is intended to be used on IBM and IBM-compatible personal computers. In this program, various methods for estimating evolutionary distances from nucleotide and amino acid sequence data, three different methods of phylogenetic inference (UPGMA, neighbor-joining and maximum parsimony) and two statistical tests of topological differences are included. For the maximum parsimony method, new algorithms of branch-and-bound and heuristic searches are implemented. In addition, MEGA computes statistical quantities such as nucleotide and amino acid frequencies, transition/transversion biases, codon frequencies (codon usage tables), and the number of variable sites in specified segments in nucleotide and amino acid sequences. Advanced on-screen sequence data and phylogenetic-tree editors facilitate publication-quality outputs with a wide range of printers. Integrated and interactive designs, on-line context-sensitive helps, and a text-file editor make MEGA easy to use.

The liver is almost unique in its capacity for regeneration after hepatectomy but the exact mechanisms are not yet fully clarified. Antioxidants have been shown to promote liver regeneration after major hepatectomy. The present study evaluated the ameliorative effect of vitamin E administration on the liver regeneration after different periods of partial hepatectomy (PH) in rats. Fifty-six adult male albino rats were divided into three groups: Control sham operated group; partially hepatectomized group which were divided into three subgroups sacrificed at 1day, 3 days and 7days after the operation respectively; Partially Hepatectomized group with vitamin E pretreatment before PH where the rats were given a daily oral dose of vitamin E until the time of sacrifice of the rats. Immunohistochemical detection of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and labeling index were demonstrated. After PH, the PCNA positive hepatocytes and the PCNA labeling indices were significantly high after the 1 st day and then much decreased after the 3 rd day, to be followed by a slight increase at the 7 th day. Vitamin E pretreatment in PH rats resulted in a decrease in PCNA positive cells and its labeling indices in the 1 st day with a gradual increase in the 3 rd and 7 th days. Vitamin E has an inhibitory effect in the first 24 hours on liver regeneration followed by stimulatory effect at the third and seventh days after PH. These data indicated that vitamin E pretreatment has an important role in regulation and enhancement of liver regeneration after PH.

Sequence divergence for segments of three mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genes encoding the 12S and 16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome b was examined in newts belonging to the genus Euproctus (E. asper, E. montanus, E. platycephalus) and in three other species belonging to the same family (Salamandridae), Triturus carnifex, T. vulgaris, and Pleurodeles waltl. The three Euproctus species occur (one species each) in Corsica, Sardinia, and the Pyrenees. This vicariant distribution is believed to have been determined by the disjunction and rotation of the Sardinia-Corsica microplate from the Pyreneean region. Because time estimates are available for the tectonic events that led to the separation of the three landmasses, we used sequence data to estimate rates of evolution for the three gene fragments and investigated whether they conform to the rate-constancy hypothesis. By the Tajima (1993, Genetics 135:599-607) test, we could not detect rate heterogeneities for the ribosomal genes and for transversions in the cytochrome b gene. Assuming that these sites are evolving linearly over time and that cessation of gene flow occurred simultaneously with vicariant events, we compared the time of divergence estimated by molecular distances with the divergence times based on the geological estimates. Because we have two estimates of divergence time from the geological record, the split of Corsica/Sardinia from the Pyrenees and the split of Corsica from Sardinia, we could compare ratios of molecular divergence with the ratio of geological time divergence. The ratios are very similar, indicating that the molecular clock hypothesis cannot be rejected. These geological events also allowed us to calculate absolute rates of evolution for ribosomal and cytochrome b genes and compare them to rates for the same regions in other salamandrids and other vertebrates. Ribosomal mtDNA rates are comparable to those reported for other vertebrates, but cytochrome b rates are 3-7 times lower in salamanders than in other ectotherms. From a phylogenetic perspective, our data suggest that the cladogenic events leading to species formation in Euproctus and Triturus occurred very closely in time, indicating that the two genera may not be monophyletic. A duplication of the cytochrome b gene in T. carnifex was found, and the implications of this finding for mtDNA phylogenetic studies are discussed.
