This paper suggests Fuzzy-logic-rule base method to assess the performance status of a wharf in order
to classify it. The method proposed is predicated upon its ability to analyse processes and operations
based on subjective judgement with little or no statistical data available. The study also shows that
fuzzy-logic rule base is a veritable tool to qualitatively and quantitatively assess the status of a wharf
offering ferry service. Using the model developed in this study, the performance status of Yenagoa
wharf has been determined to be orange, having a (WPS) overall of 4.8. The status of the wharf has been
in good agreement with the perception of stakeholders that the Yenagoa wharf needs restructuring
to curb the frequent crisis occurring among stakeholders. The model also indicated those areas of the
wharf’s operations needing attention. The study indicates that even though major components that
determine the quality and profitability of the wharf’s ferry service are high in value, the overall status
of the wharf may not be necessarily high. As such, the study method can be used to control the growing
ill-feeling between boat operators and passengers while harmonizing all stakeholders (operators,
passengers, and regulators etc) to work together to improve the status of the wharf.

This study discusses the analysis of various modeling approaches and maintenance techniques applicable to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier operations in the maritime environment. Various novel modeling techniques are discussed; including genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and evidential reasoning. We also identify the usefulness of these algorithms in the LNG carrier industry in the areas of risk assessment and maintenance modeling.

Safety Critical Maritime Infrastructure (SCMI) systems are vulnerable to diverse risks in their challenging field of operations due to their interactions and interdependence. In addition, the multiplicity of stakeholders in these systems and the complex operational scenarios are often associated with a high level of uncertainty because they usually operate in a dynamic environment in which the boundaries of safety are pushed, leading to the disruption of operations. Therefore, the safety of these systems is very important to ensuring resilience of their operations. This research is focus on the background analysis of SCMI systems. This includes operational processes of SCMI systems, security threats and estimates of economic damage to the system, resilience engineering literature relevant to maritime operations; regulatory overview including risk governance of the systems, lessons learnt from major accidents and a concluding remark is drawn.

The concept of genetic algorithm (GA) is used to model the cost of maintenance and repair of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) containment system and its transfer arm, after assessing the total risk of the systems using the probabilistic risk assessment technique. The failure frequency data of the basic events of the fault tree developed to model the LNG containment system and transfer arm, which is implemented and evaluated to estimate the failure frequencies of the systems, are derived from a careful literature search. A total risk formula is developed, which is dependent on hazard severity weight, failure frequencies, and the time and cost of maintenance and repair of the LNG carrier systems. The formula serves as the objective function, while new total cost allocated for the maintenance and repair of the LNG carrier systems as a whole is the constraint with the boundaries of presenting initial/unit cost of maintenance and repair of each containment system and transfer arm. Optimization is carried out on the objective function and its constraint for the identification of new cost of maintaining and repairing the containment system and transfer arm independently with the powerful tool of GA using Matlab version 7.7 software for improvement of the system's safety level.

The world has embraced the need to invent and use technology that would lead to the sustenance of the environment. The maritime sector is not left out of this, the innovation that would lead ultimately to the sustainability of the sector and the environment as a whole. This article points out the efforts of companies, governments and stake holders in creating devices, policies and institutions to ensure sustainability in the maritime sector.

Also, it points out the need for industrial activities at sea (blue growth) as it has been observed in recent years that there have been challenges raised by a scarcity of resources and land available. This informs the need for diversified activities such as aqua culture and renewable energies to fulfil humanity’s ever growing need for resources; in terms of food, energy and water.

The article recommends that key stakeholders in the maritime sector should form partnerships and alliances that would ensure continuous support in enhancing environmental conscious technologies and in turn lead to rapid growth and adaptation of these technologies and policies all over the world.

In this study, we optimize the loading and discharging operations of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carrier. First, we identify the required precautions for LNG carrier cargo operations. Next, we prioritize these precautions using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and experts' judgments, in order to optimize the operational loading and discharging exercises of the LNG carrier, prevent system failure and human error, and reduce the risk of marine accidents. Thus, the objective of our study is to increase the level of safety during cargo operations.

This report assesses the impact of alliances on the maritime transport chain and its main stakeholders. Alliances have become a dominant feature of container shipping, with around 95% of the major East-West container trades covered by carriers that form part of three global alliances. The report discusses the impacts on competition and asks whether alliances bring benefits, and for whom. Finally, it presents policy options for governments based on the findings.

In Part I of this paper, I focused on the contribution that the great trading companies made to the development of the West at the beginning of the Age of Exploration. In this second part, I investigate the non-merchants that plied the oceans as common carriers to smaller traders and others without their own dedicated fleets.

This paper continues to study the birth of international trade through the lens of postal history.

In recent time, “the operational performance of a port is generally measured in terms of speed with which a vessel is despatched, the rate at which cargo is handled and the duration that cargo stays in port prior to shipment or post discharge” invariably, this statement suggests that cargo-handling performance is measured by two indicators, vessel turn-around time and cargo dwell time, which is to a large extent determined by the time frame taken to handle cargo at the port.
The study was aimed at analyzing cargo handling performance and its effect on turn around time of liner ships at Tema port. The purpose of this research is to analyze cargo-handling performance for containerized cargo at berth in respect to service time, ship output, berth output, utilization and productivity, to determine to what effect cargo-handling operations have on turnaround time of container vessels and identify bottlenecks, to find out customers perception in respect to service quality in cargo-handling procedure at the container berths.

The overall purpose of this dissertation is to understand how and why networks played a significant role for the merchants and company traders of the Danish Asiatic Company (DAC) in their trade in China.

To explore this, the following research questions will be answered:
1. From the perspective of network analysis and prosopography, what characterised the merchants and traders as a group and how was experience transmitted among the company traders?
2. From the perspective of microhistory, what role did networks play for selected individual company traders?

To examine these questions, an analysis on several levels is performed, starting from a broad perspective of the company, its function, and purpose from a network perspective. The rise and fall of the DAC serves as an important backdrop for the research questions. Then the focus narrows down to the societal group of merchants who were responsible for managing the company as directors and others that handled the trade with China. After examining the group as a whole using the prosopographical approach, the focus becomes narrower, turning to microhistory to get as close as possible to a small set of actors, distributed over the 100-year history of the DAC.

The chapters reflect this division. In chapter II, the Danish Asiatic Company is analysed, sketching its history and examining the various purposes the company served for various actors of both individual and organisational nature. In chapter III, the focus narrows to the merchants of the company, seen as a group, approached with the help of prosopography. Here, first the merchants serving as directors will be analysed and then the company traders – both viewed as a group and with the assistance of network analysis. Finally, in chapter IV the focus becomes even narrower as four actors are provided with microhistorical narratives, followed by an analysis in view of the previous chapters.
