Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

Background: Young peoples' knowledge on sexual and reproductive health rights (SRHRs) is essential in exercising these rights. Knowledge about SRHRs helps tackling of neglected issues, such as adolescent sexuality, gender based violence, and unsafe abortion. But little is known about tshe level of knowledge and the important predictors in the study area, therefore this study was done to fi ll this information gap.

Os estudos de genocídio possuem uma importância em identificar as possíveis dinâmicas que permeiam esse conflito, além de contribuir com sua prevenção e punição. Neste artigo, a dinâmica analisada é o papel das relações de gênero diante do genocídio. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa bibliogŕafica. O principal objetivo é perceber como as relações de poder são influenciadas pelo gênero e como isso afeta o ato genocida, em seguida, elucidar essas questões por meio do estudo de caso do genocídio ocorrido na Guerra da Bósnia.

Abstract
The studies of genocide have a great importance on identifying the possible dynamics which permeate this conflict, besides, it contributes with its prevention and punishment. In this article, the analyzed dynamics is the role of gender relations on genocide. The methodology used was a bibliographic research. The main goal is to understand how the power relations are influenced by gender, and how it affects the genocidal act, following the clarification of those raised issues by studying the genocide case that occurred on the Bosnian War. INTRODUÇÃO O presente artigo tem como sua temática principal a compreensão das dinâmicas de gênero dentro do crime de genocídio e mais especificamente do genocídio ocorrido na Guerra da Bósnia. Os objetivos do trabalho incluem definir o genocídio e o que sua proteção jurídica abrange; introduzir a questão de gênero ao analisar o crime de genocídio e abrangê-la ao estudo de caso da Guerra da Bósnia. This study assessed attitude towards observation of retinoblastoma among four hundred (400) mothers of under-five children in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of all mothers of under-five children in Kaduna State which are 2,050,608. One specific purpose, research question and hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. A multi-stage sampling technique comprising of systematic, simple random, purposive and proportionate sampling technique was used in selecting the required number of respondents for the study as stated above. Four hundred (400) copies of the researcher-developed questionnaire were distributed using simple random sampling technique, of which 374 (93.5%) were retrieved and considered valid for the study. Data collected was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20. Frequency and simple percentages were used to describe the demographic characteristics of the respondents, while mean and standard deviations was used to answer the research question. Inferential statistics of one-sample t-test was used to test the formulated hypothesis at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The finding of the study revealed that, attitude towards observation of retinoblastoma was significant (t=19.327, p=0.001). In conclusion, the study showed that mothers of under-five children have positive attitude towards observation of retinolastoma. It was therefore recommended that, the State and Federal Ministry of Health should carry out a nation-wide campaign on awareness of retinoblastoma so as to create more awareness and help sustain the positive attitude towards observation of retinoblastoma among mothers of under-five children.

The purpose of this paper is to rewrite the criticism made by Avishai Margalit in Decent Society (1996) in the context of gender violence in Brazil. To Margalit, the simple equal distribution of goods by the State - which characterizes a Rawls' fair society - can be made in a way that humiliates individuals - which characterizes an indecent society - if the distribution methods are not observed. Through this perspective, this investigation makes an analogy of the Margalit’s criticism, but not running it to the distribution of the goods, but leading to the distribution of the legal recognition of women. We conduct a documental analyses of the treatment that gender violence victims receive in Brazil, and it is made by the global justice approach. The research question of this study is: at what measure Brazilian domestic violence law occupies itself only with fulfilling the intent of a fair society, but not of a decent one?

This is a book on the experiences of transgender persons in Karnataka and the journey of Jeeva, a community based organisation established in 2012, that works to promote the rights of gender and sexual minorities.
There are four sections in this book. The first and second map personal stories and experiences with the major institutions of society such as the state, media and family. Most stories have been shared by friends of Jeeva who have consistently supported Jeeva in prioritising issues for reflection, conversation and campaigns. Some stories have been adapted from ‘Ananya’, Jeeva’s print magazine, or interviews aired on Jeeva Diary, a community radio programme. Jeeva’s key interventions are highlighted in the third section. The final section touches on engagements with law and the state and includes experiences from campaigns and traces key developments and current concerns for gender and sexual minority rights. In the annexures to the book are a glossary of relevant concepts, acronyms used in the book, links for reference and further reading and finally, lists of sensitive hospitals, counsellors and NGOs/CBOs.
We hope this book generates awareness, understanding and dialogue on the concerns of gender and sexual minorities. Though not exhaustive, it attempts to reflect the rich and varied experiences, challenges and victories of gender and sexual minorities – personal, collective and organizational.

This article explores the relationship between breath and emotion and between breath and image in an attempt to make theatre and performance that is inspired by a biography of the body. It investigates the body as a site for generating images for the purpose of performance-making. The article is a methodological study that draws from various traditions, methods, and somatic practices. It explores the relationship between body, breath, and feeling and how these impacts on the imagination in processes of producing images for performance-making. It further investigates whether breath can be experienced as an embodied element that is sensed somatically by performers. The author argues that it can, and in so doing may, act as a catalyst for activating memories, stories, and experiences held in the body of the performer.

This thesis aims to investigate the relations between representations of gender and sexuality in Australian alcohol advertisements and the formation and perpetuation of gendered alcohol expectancies which could represent a factor in the high prevalence of alcohol-involved sexual assault observed in Australia. The theoretical framework employed in this work lies firmly within the social constructivist views of gender and sexuality, with notions such as hegemonic masculinity and homosociality playing a central role in the analyses. Noting the literature on representation, particularly of gender and sexuality in advertisements, a comprehensive framework is defined for analysing a sample of Australian alcohol advertisements. A combination of visual content analysis and semiotic analyses are used to uncover the ways in which Australian alcohol advertising promotes a gender-segregated drinking culture, and how such gender-biased notions of alcohol consumption can become problematic. A sample of 74 Australian advertisements published between 2012 and 2017 are considered in the content analysis, with a focus on gender stereotypes associated with hegemonic masculinity and emphasised femininity. Semiotic analyses informed by Barthesian semiotics are then carried on sub-sections of the sample, with particular interest on the notion of cultural myths. The analyses reveal that despite considerable criticism of advertising throughout the years, stereotypical representations of men and women remain widespread, cementing gendered attitudes and expectations prevalent in society - particularly with regards to alcohol use. These gender biases, as I argue, play a role in the normalisation and ubiquity of sexual violence in situations involving the consumption of alcohol.

Resumen
La violencia intrafamiliar ha generado un gran interés en la comunidad científica internacional, no obstante, hasta hace apenas unos años se comenzó a investigar el fenómeno emergente de la violencia filio-parental. En México, específicamente, los antecedentes disponibles hasta el momento sobre este fenómeno siguen siendo escasos, por ello el objetivo de esta investigación ha sido explorar la prevalencia de la violencia filio-parental en la etapa de la adultez emergente, considerando distintos tipos de convivencia con los progenitores. Participaron 408 mujeres y 153 hombres, universitarios, mexicanos, con edades comprendidas entre los 18 y 27 años, quienes contestaron parte del Adolescent Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire. Los resultados señalaron que ciertamente existieron conductas de violencia filio-parental cometidas por ambos sexos, sobre todo de tipo psicológico, y principalmente dirigidas hacia la madre. Entre otras cuestiones, se discute la mayor presencia de la violencia psicológica, así como la posible vulnerabilidad de las progenitoras, sin olvidar la imperiosa necesidad de continuar con investigaciones sobre este fenómeno en población mexicana, haciendo énfasis en la mayor comprensión de la violencia filio-parental para la elaboración de planes de prevención sobre esta problemática aun no suficientemente reconocida por la comunidad académica científica en México.

Abstract
Domestic violence phenomenon has caught interest by the world-wide scientific community yet, it's only been that child-to parent aggression started to be subject of study until a few years ago. To be precise, in Mexico the available data about this particular phenomenon are very scarce, because of this, the objective of this research was to explore Child-to-parent violence on emerging adults, while keeping in mind the different ways in which they relate with their parents. 408 females and 153 males, college students, ranging on ages between 18 and 27 years old, participated by answering a section of the Adolescent Child-to-Parent Aggression Questionnaire. Results pointed out that there are child-to-parent aggressive behaviors committed by both sexes against parents, in particular the psychological type and mainly directed towards the mother. Among other issues, it is discussed the greater presence of psychological violence as well as the possible vulnerability of female progenitors, without missing of view the urgent need to continue research of this phenomenon in Mexican population, emphasizing the need for greater understanding of child-to parent violence in order to be able to elaborate prevention strategies on this topic, which has not been appropriately recognized by the Mexican scientific community.

The study explores how the eponymous novel Our Lady of Alice Bhatti (2011) by Mohammed Hanif takes the stance of rediscovering the multifaceted strains of sexual violence as on the backdrop of sainthood. The protagonist (Alice) executes saintly miracles with her unnerving gifts for which superficially she is perceived as a divine human being if not worshipped. But nothing, not even her supernatural skill set, can restrain her from being a victim of sexual violence. Rather spiritual holiness is shattered by the intimidation of the body. Alice's mystic powers are treated like a witch's necromancy than a curer's touch for which she is prejudiced as an easily accessible flesh. This preoccupation of terror is not merely the creed for sex but the greed for violence (hence power). Finding common grounds between two religions on the basis of humanity and nature the paper sounds true to its venture of the issue of sexual violence along with its turnovers in the social, political and cultural dynamism of sainthood.
