Sexual Identity

This chapter explores how ‘free speech’ appears in contemporary right-wing reactionary movements and spaces, specifically those oriented around masculinity and unwelcomed changes in gender relations more generally. Men Going Their Own Way, Pick-Up Artists and Involuntary Celibates are examples of movements which, in the context of heightened feminist visibility, correlate the supposed suppression of free speech with a culture that increasingly rejects traditional expressions of masculinity. Though these movements are relatively niche, our discussion is tethered to recent developments that highlight the status of free speech in wider society. Chief among them is President Trump’s recent signing of an executive order ostensibly ‘aimed at improving transparency and promoting free speech on college campuses’, due to American values being ‘under siege’ both by student groups and a broader discourse of gendered and racialised grievance. Several popular speakers and magazines have similarly made speaking truth in the face of a suppressive, ‘politically correct’ establishment their raison d’ȇtre. Linking fringe reactionary groups with mainstream political discourse is ‘The Red Pill’ philosophy which, as in the film from which the phrase originates, posits a conflictual world view in which reality itself is hidden from the masses. Via analysis of these movements’ most popular online forums we ask: What is the hidden reality of gender that the Red Pill philosophy promises to bring into light? Are there fractures between and within these groups? What work does debate and controversy over free speech do in (or for) such movements? When these movements are debating ‘free speech’, what is actually at stake?

RESUMO: A partir do caso, divulgado pela mídia, de Thomas Beatie, o "primeiro homem grávido", revisitamos interrogações freudianas sobre o "fator" da diferença sexual e as dificuldades encontradas pela análise no ponto de limite do "rochedo" identificado por Freud. Detectamos, neste caso, um possível eco da "recusa do feminino", em particular na produção da expressão "homem grávido", grafado com "o". Concomitantemente, o "rochedo" se revela em sua função de dobradiça entre a reatualização dos conflitos psíquicos do passado, o tratamento dado a isso e a abertura ética promovida por Freud de um posicionamento do sujeito face à experiência da diferença sexual, tornada acessível pela análise.

Abstract This ethnographic study seeks to better conceptualize the inclusion and exclusion criteria associated with the cultural group the Radical Faeries. This group has been known to espouse messages of sexual freedom, anarchy, and spirituality, though an in depth focus on membership has not been produced. Four Caucasian, self­identified gay men served as participants for this study and completed a guided interview pertaining to their experiences with the Radical Faeries. From these interviews, six themes emerged: corrective social experience and healing, peaceful anarchy, amorphous membership, open­hearted inclusion, drugs and sexuality, and creativity and spirituality. From these themes, we concluded that the Radical Faerie community offers a necessary anomaly with regard to it’s criteria, mainly due to the fact that it is a living social construction that is actively in flux. The present work proposes the drafting of a questionnaire capable of investigating all the areas of clinical interest of individual human sexuality. By analyzing the main psychosexual tests, we proceeded to draft a test that contains five sections: the first one is dedicated to personal and contact data; the second one is dedicated to sexual history; the third one is dedicated to emotional and emotional profiles; the fourth one is dedicated to functional and dysfunctional behavioural profiles in sex; finally, the fifth section is dedicated to the study of relational behaviour in the couple. A series of proposed questionnaires, initialled by the therapist during the clinical interview session, to study the patient's sexual matrix and complete his or her personality profile.

Carl R. Trueman, in his book “The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self,” looks at the ideas which lie at the foundation of the drive for self-expression and authenticity, and the concepts which undergird the militant defence of the plethora of sexual and gender identities.

This article examines the ways in which representational and
identity transformations work during the socialization in the
workplace of young LGBT hires, linked to discrimination perceived
in their workplace environment as well as their impact on
professional goals. Working within the theoretical framework of
active socialization, the study is based on the IMIS method and
proposes a detailed analysis of two cases recently entering the
transportation workplace. The results show that, depending on
how severe the perceived discrimination is in the workplace,
previous experiences of homophobia encountered in other
environments and already built self-image are reactivated in
different ways, leading to a more or less important reconstruction
of professional and identity representations, as well as the future
goals of the individual. These elements are discussed from the
point of view of interactions between environments and possible
interventions by valuing diversity and accompanying the integra-
tion of young hires into organizations.

The origins of bodily sex are well understood but consensus on origins for gender are missing. While gonadal sex and sexual orientation are accepted as emanating from genetic and hormonal templates, gender’s existence, when it is acknowledged, currently has so far emanated from either social origins or a nebulous ‘somewhere’ in the brain. Although the characteristics of sex-related behavior relative to the physicality of reproduction are clearly dimorphic, other cognitive behaviors relative to reproduction have not been explicitly identified and presented. This article synthesizes important research to present a biological location of gender as opposed to sex. These cognitive behaviors can be differentially linked with reproduction throughout the lifespan. A physiological location for gender in the human phenotype may help advance this research further.
