Sephardic Literature

La  poesía  infantil  es  un  género  literario  con  características  propias,  tanto  en  su  forma  como  en  su  contenido,  que  cumple  una  función social de gran importancia en todas las  culturas.  En  este  estudio  se  presenta,  en  primer  lugar,  un  análisis  de  las  características  fundamentales  de  la  poesía  infantil  de  tradición  oral  sefardí.  La  segunda  parte  del  artículo  está  dedicada  al  estudio  de  las  nanas  y  las  canciones  infantiles  compuestas  por  dos  autoras  contemporáneas,  Beatriz  Mazliah  y  Ada  Gattegno  Saltiel,  quienes  escriben poesía infantil en judeoespañol en un momento  en  que  esta  lengua  se  encuentra  cercana a la extinción. Se plantea entonces la
pregunta de cuál es el significado cultural de escribir poesía infantil en una lengua que ya no hablan los niños.

Poetry  for  children  is  a  literary  genre  with  its  own  characteristics,  both  in  the  form  and  in  the  content,  which  plays  an  important social role in all cultures. Firstly, we propose an analysis of the main characteris-tics  of  poetry  for  children  in  the  Sephardic  oral tradition. The second part of the article is  devoted  to  the  study  of  the  lullabies  and  nursery rhymes composed by two contempo-rary  authors,  Beatriz  Mazliah  and  Ada  Gat-tegno  Saltiel,  who  write  poetry  for  children  in  Judeo-Spanish  in  a  moment  when  this  language  is  close  to  extinction.  The  ques-tion  asked  is  what  the  cultural  significance  of  writing  poetry  for  children  in  a  language  which is no longer spoken by children is.

The aim of this paper is to study the poetic works by Margalit Matitiahu, written in Judeo-Spanish, by reference to the interdisciplinary reflection on home as proposed by Tadeusz Sławek, Aleksandra Kunce and Zbigniew Kadłubek (2013) and defined by them as oikology. Such a reading of Matitiahu's poems reveals multi-layered nature of her oikos - i.e. home or place of belonging in physical , cultural and symbolic meaning - which combines her present Israeli cultural identity with the history and cultural legacy of her Sephardic ancestors. The central aspect to be analyzed is the Judeo-Spanish language, chosen by her as a means of expression in times when it is regarded as severely endangeded.

"Salónica / Thessaloniki: Memory and Italian-Sephardic Identity in Flora Molcho". Based on the analysis of the memoir "Anámnesis" (2014) by the writer and translator Flora Molcho, we intend to reflect on two aspects of the Sephardic community of Thessaloniki. On the one hand, Molcho’s family memories allow her to focus on the debate on historical memory, already very developed in Spain in regard to civil war and Franco’s regime, but perhaps still insufficient in regard to the recent memory of Eastern Sephardic communities, dragged before by Nazism and then by the Greek civil war. On the other hand, the narrative of Molcho allows us to reason once again on the identity issue of the Oriental Sephardic communities, but from a perhaps original perspective, that is to say, the author’s double membership of both the linguistic community of origin (at the same time, Judeo-Spanish and Greek) as well as adoption (the Italian). With this essay, we intend to offer new elements about the cultural heritage of the Sephardic community of Thessaloniki in our contemporary era, through the mediation of the literary language that Flora Molcho uses in her work. The work will end with a brief presentation of the research project E.S.THE.R. (Enquiry on Sephardic Theatrical Representation).

"Salónica/Salonicco: memoria e identidad italo-sefardí en la obra de Flora Molcho". A partir del análisis del libro de memorias "Anámnesis" (2014) de la escritora y traductora Flora Molcho se pretende reflexionar sobre dos aspectos de la comunidad sefardí de Salónica. Por un lado, los recuerdos familiares de Molcho permiten centrarse en el debate sobre la memoria histórica, ya muy desarrollado en España por lo que se refiere a la guerra civil y al franquismo, pero quizá todavía insuficiente por lo que atañe a la memoria reciente de las comunidades sefardíes orientales, arrastradas antes por el nazismo y luego por la guerra civil griega. Por otro lado, la narración de Molcho permite razonar una vez más sobre la cuestión identitaria de los sefardíes orientales, pero desde una perspectiva quizá original, es decir de la doble pertenencia de la autora tanto a la comunidad lingüística de origen (al mismo tiempo, judeo-española y griega) como a la de adopción (la italiana). Con este ensayo, se pretende ofrecer nuevos elementos sobre la herencia cultural de la comunidad sefardí de Salónica en nuestra época contemporánea, a través de la mediación del lenguaje literario que Flora Molcho emplea en su obra. El trabajo se abrirá con una breve presentación del proyecto de investigación E.S.THE.R. (Enquiry on Sephardic Theatrical Representation).

Este libro contiene seis ensayos dedicados a autores sefardíes contemporáneos diferentes en cuanto a género literario (prosa ficcional, prosa no ficcional, poesía), a estilo y a procedencia geográfica, pero todos unidos por el uso en sus obras del judeoespañol o ladino (en sus distintas variantes). Escribir en la lengua de sus padres, idioma en riesgo de desaparecer, es para ellos una resistencia al olvido y una búsqueda identitaria. Las obras aquí analizadas, escritas en un arco temporal de más de treinta años, describen un mundo a punto de disolverse que, no obstante, vuelve a resplandecer a través de sus páginas. Los autores tratados son: Clarisse Nicoïdski, Marcel Cohen, Margalit Matitiahu, Rosa Nissán, Angelina Muñiz, Matilda y Rajel Barnatán, Denise León, Juan Gelman, Myriam Moscona.

Il volume è uno studio approfondito della vita e dell’opera di Joseph Penso de Vega, esponente del «barocco sefardita». Nel testo, la sua figura viene studiata in una prospettiva interdisciplinare, alla luce dei contatti che ebbe con la comunità ebraica di Amsterdam e di Livorno, con ambienti sia cristiani che laici e con le più influenti tendenze letterarie dell’epoca. In tal modo si offre un quadro dell’autore più completo, che non si sofferma unicamente sulla sua produzione letteraria, ma sugli aspetti religiosi, di storia delle idee e di multiculturalità presenti nella sua opera.

This dissertation explores the rich Sephardic Art Song repertoire. It comprises a geographical and historical overview of the Sephardim; an introduction of the Ladino (Judeo-Espagnol) language; a musical overview of traditional Sephardic songs; and the development of the genre from its emergence to the present, including a list of all the 20th- and 21st-century composers that have contributed to the Sephardic Art Song genre and a catalog of their works; a discussion on performance practice, including a diction guide for Ladino; and three recital performances of a selection of works from this repertoire. The Sephardim are a diasporic population of Jewish people, whose ancestry can be traced back to the Iberian Peninsula, specifically to the Jews that were expelled from Spain in 1492 as a result of the Spanish Inquisition. As they migrated all over the world, the Sephardim carried with them their culture, traditions, JudeoEspagnol language, and oral literature. Traditional Sephardic songs constitute a large portion of this literature and have been preserved to this day through oral transmission from generation to generation. The 20th century witnessed an emergence of a Sephardic song repertoire in the form of classical art song, as Western classical composers, such as Alberto Hemsi, showed interest in collecting and transcribing these folksongs, and in arranging them in the Western classical tradition for voice and various instruments, in various degrees of complexity. As of today, there are over forty-five 20th- and 21st-century Western classical composers that have made significant contributions to the Sephardic Art Song genre with their arrangements of over a hundred and ninety Sephardic folksongs, as well as their original compositions.

The composers discussed and the selection of 20th- and 21st-century works performed in this dissertation are the following: Yehezkel Braun, Seven Sephardic Romances; Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Three Sephardic Songs; José Antonio de Donostia, Canciones Sefardíes; Frederic Hand, Sephardic Songs; Alberto Hemsi, Coplas Sefardies; William Kenlon, Two Sephardic Songs; Manuel García Morante, 40 Canciones Sefardies; Joaquín Nin-Culmell, Six Chansons Populaires Séphardiques; Lorenzo Palomo, Cinco Canciones Sefardíes; Sid Robinovitch, Rodas Recordada; Joaquín Rodrigo, Cuatro Canciones Sefardíes; Wolf Simoni, Cuatro Cánticas Sefardíes; Manuel Valls, Canciones Sefarditas; Andrew Zohn, 8 Sephardic Songs.

Estudio sobre la poesía luctuosa sefardí del Mediterráneo Oriental y de Marruecos, tanto la utlizada en ocasiones de duelo particular como en la festividad religiosa de Tisá beab. Tras una clasificación de la poesía luctuosa por géneros, se ofrece la edición filológica y con estudio de 14 poemas luctuosos en judeoespañol: las Coplas de Chelebí Bejor Carmona, la Elegía por Yacob H. Cobo, la Elegía por Flor Hasid; las coplas del Horbán de Sión, la Almenara, la Nueva endecha de la madre filiófaga, y Haná la buena judía;  los romances de La choza del desesperado, La muerte del príncipe don Juan, La muerte del Maestre de Santiago, El testamento del rey Felipe, El hermano infame y Don Gato; y el poema Muerte que a todos convidas.
