Roman ceramics

This paper illustrates the results of the study about coarse ware, cooking ware and amphorae from the “insula del Centenario” in Pompeii. The principal aim of the study is to analyse the most recurrent shapes of coarse and cooking ware and the clay samples selected from the collected material. For the amphorae the typological study has identified the Tyrrhenian products, that are the most abundant claims in the insula. The different colours, inclusions, textures and surface
treatments of the fabric samples are here examined in order to identify a possible local provenance. The cross-check study proved that, from the middle republican age until the first century A.D., the vessels and the amphorae were probably produced in local pottery workshops,
supplied by the same clay pits.

This paper illustrates the results of the studies about black glazed pottery and terra sigillata of the “insula del Centenario” in Pompeii. The typological study has been crossed with the observation of the clays samples, partially subjected to archaeometric analysis, in order to
obtain information about the origin of the vessels. The results obtained demonstrate that 87% of the black glazed pottery and 53% of the terra sigillata italica specimens were produced in Campanian pottery workshops, while the imports of tableware both in Republican age and in Imperial age seem limited.

Between 1981 and 1984, on behalf of the new Servei d'Arqueologia de la Generalitat de Catalunya, a team led by M. Roca, R. Mar and J. Ruiz de Arbulo made the planimetry of the remains of the Roman theater of Tarragona and an stratigraphical investigation  in the annexed monumental sector. This investigation allowed to document a wide stratigraphic sequence of a sector near the port of the old Tarraco.
It is a large warehouse with parallel ships separated by pillars of masonry and work walls. The structure of the building seems to correspond to the end of a porticus, a port warehouse. This warehouse was built on a powerful building level containing a great ceramic set that we now present. The interest of this deposit lies in the richness and variety of the materials present and especially in its precise chronology to study the commercial movements of ceramic handicrafts and amphorae containers during the first years of Augustus's mandate, at the end of the 1st century BC.

A sample-set of twenty-one Type 3-A water jar pottery fragments excavated from the northern peninsula of Pollentia, Mallorca, Balearic Islands were chemically and compositionally evaluated
using archaeometric techniques. The applications and principle working parameters of artefactual analytical techniques have been investigated in this dissertation, paying particular attention to XRF, XRD and SEM as analytical tools in archaeometry.

The study has provided strong evidence for the requirement of three compositionally similar chemical groups for the sample-set (with two sub groups and an outlier), as well as the
identification of the evolution of crystalline mineral phases and vitrification intensities, in order to estimate equivalent firing temperatures (EFTs), ranging from < 800⁰C-850⁰C to between 900⁰C-1000⁰C.

Further research may be done in order to better evaluate the provenance and EFTs of the
calcareous-based artefacts, and associate the consumption site to the production site kiln. This thesis is a continuation from a future co-published dissertation entitled “Caractérisation
archéométrique de pichets d'eau du période musulmane dans la ville de Pollentia (Alcúdia, Majorque, Îles Baléares)” by the author and members within the ERAAUB research group at the Universitat de Barcelona.
