Roman Temples

I materiali architettonici fittili provenienti dagli scavi ottocenteschi a Nemi sono oltremodo conosciuti; gran parte di essi, infatti, forma parte di importanti collezioni museali d’Europa (Ny Carslberg Glyptotek di Copenhagen, Nottingham Castle Museum; Museo Nazionale Romano; Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia; Museo delle Navi Romane di Nemi) e degli Stati Uniti (Boston Fine Arts Museum e Harvard Art Museum). Gli scavi archeologici ripresi nell’area del tempio di Diana a partire dal 2009 da parte dell’Università di Perugia (condotti da Filippo Coarelli, Paolo Braconi e Francesca Diosono), in collaborazione con la allora Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio, hanno permesso non solo di comprendere che l’edificio ha una storia edilizia assai più lunga e articolata di quanto finora pensato, ma anche di rinvenire – in contesto stratigrafico – nuovi frammenti di terrecotte che hanno arricchito la varietà tipologica del repertorio decorativo noto. In questo modo, siamo ora in grado di ricostruire i vari sistemi di decorazione fittile delle diverse fasi edilizie del tempio principale, che vanno dalla fine del IV-inizi del III secolo a.C. al tardo II - inizi I a.C. L’ultima fase del tempio, datata al secondo quarto del I secolo a.C., vede una sostituzione della decorazione fittile con una analoga in bronzo, di cui restano scarsi frammenti al Museo di Villa Giulia e gli incastri sui blocchi per l’alloggiamento di alcune delle sculture frontonali, rinvenuti nei recenti scavi.

The western “satire” as a literary genre enjoys a long history and is said to have originated from the “Roman Satire”, which Quintilian claimed as the Roman’s own invention rather than an inheritance from the Greeks. Who is the first writer of this genre remains in question but Juvenal is regarded as the last poet without question. This article is aimed to examine a significant image, the image of temple, which frequently appears in Juvenal’s satires. This examination will be conducted in light of the knowledge of the Roman archeology, and three particular dimensions of the “temple”, the temple being ancient, high, and rich, are selected as the archeological lenses, through which we try to get an in-depth and all-round understanding of the Roman temples. Literary works are closely related to the time when and the place where they were composed. Without a historical knowledge of them, it’s difficult to obtain a genuine and down-to-earth understanding of the works, let alone further interpretations for the later readers, and this is especially true for the works passing down from the ancient times. The archeological perspective employed in this article can constitute a useful method in this respect in the literary studies.

This study was conducted as a result of the identification of the temples of the Corinthian order built in the Anatolian geography and the examination and evaluation of these structures. The topic covered in the study is divided into two main headings.
In the first chapter; representation and identification of the individual temples while emphasizing the common properties with the other temples is tried by the means of location, planning-infrastructure, architectural ratios, dating criteria and cult basis.
In the “Comparison-Analysis” named second chapter, all temples which are included in the case are analysed with the common properties and the differring properties also considering the outer Anatolian Doric Temples. By the means of gathered data in theaforimentioned chapter, some sorts of consequences are revealed by commenting in the subchapters location, planning-infrastructure, architectural ratios, choronological order and cults. These consequences are represented as statistical data with the help of tables and graphs to achieve a deeper comprehension.

Bu çalışmada, Anadolu coğrafyasında inşa edilmiş Korinth Düzenine sahip tapınaklar tespit edilmiş olup, bu yapılar çalışma içerisinde incelenip değerlendirilerek aktarılmıştır. Çalışmanın konusu ise iki ana başlık altında toplanmıştır.
Birinci bölümde, her tapınak kendi içinde konum, plan-altyapı, oranlar, tarihleyici kriterler ve kültler bazında ele alınıp, önceden yapılmış çalınmalardan da yararlanılmış ve başka yapılarla benzeyen özellikler ön plana çıkarılıp, bu tapınaklar tanıtılıp tanımlanmaya çalışılmıştır.
Çalınmanın ikinci bölümünü oluşturan “Karşılaştırmalı Değerlendirme” kısmında ise, çalışmadaki bütün yapıların ortak özellik gösteren yönleri ve birbirlerinden ayrılan özellikleri, Anadolu dışındaki örnekler de göz önünde bulundurularak incelenmiştir. Önceki bölümde elde edilen verilerin, ikinci kısımda yayılım alanları, konum, altyapı, plan, düzen, kullanılan malzemeler, inşa tarihleri ve kültler gibi çeşitli alt başlıklar altında yorumlanması ile bir takım sonuçlara ulaşılmış, bu sonuçlar ise çalınmanın daha sağlıklı kavranılması adına, istatistiki veriler halinde tablolar ve grafikler ile birlikte sunulmuştur.

La diffusione capillare dei mitrei di Ostia in tutti i quartieri della città è stata interpretata come una testimonianza della popolarità e della superiorità del culto mitriaco sulle religioni tradizionali. Questo modello cristiano-centrato della diffusione del 'mitraismo' si basa su una visione ormai superata della religione romana e dei cosidetti culti orientali e anche su una valutazione sommaria della topografia mitriaca di Ostia. È quindi necessario esaminare attentamente il loro contesto di insediamento. Una volta meglio conosciuti, i luoghi in cui erano insediati i mitrei suggeriscono nuove ipotesi sulla natura delle comunità che li frequentavano. Fino a che punto esse erano in realtà costituite da abitanti del quartiere vicinissimo? Considerando i luoghi nei quali erano inseriti i mitrei, ci si deve chiedere da chi potevano essere davvero frequentati. Per evitare una prospettiva esclusivista, che sarebbe questa volta 'mitraico-centrata', le nostre riflessioni verranno arricchite da confronti con luoghi di culto dedicati ad altre divinità, che si trovavano in contesti simili a quelli dei mitrei. The Roman coins from Colchester House are analysed using Reece's (1991) coin periods. The coins include a late 4th-century hoard. The site finds reveal an unusual pattern of coin loss with high peaks in the mid-and very late 4th century. The likely function of the basilican building excavated on the site is considered in the light of the coin evidence.

Recibido el 9 de septiembre de 2018 Aceptado el 9 de marzo de 2019 RESUMEN: El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar los procesos de penetración, difusión y evolución del culto isíaco y serapeico en la Península Ibérica (en concreto en la Tarraconense y en la Bética). Para ello se ha recopilado la información arqueológica, arquitectónica y epigráfica disponible en torno a los templos de todos los yacimientos implicados: Ampurias, Carthago Nova, Itálica y Baelo Claudia. De esta manera, mediante el estudio transversal de todos esos datos se ha obtenido un balance general de la situación en el que se tendrá en cuenta: la relación de los cultos con el mar, la ciudad, la autoridad gobernante y las analogías constructivas. ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to analyse the penetration, diffusion and evolution processes of the isiac and serapeic cults in the Iberian Peninsula (in specific in the Tarraconensis and Baetica provinces). In order to do this we gathered all archeological, architectural and epigraphic information available around the temples of all the implied sites have been compiled: Ampurias, Carthago Nova, Italica and Baelo Claudia. This way, through the transversal study of all these data, we have obtained a general balance of the situation in which we will have to consider: the connection of those cults with the sea, city, reigning authorities and constructive analogies.
