River Basin

This chapter is an inquiry about the intertwined relationship between the biophysical landscape and infrastructure. It examines dam reservoirs as infrastructures embedded in a landscape in constant flux. More specifically, I trace the history of dams in Turkey through the lenses of concerns over sediment accumulation in dam reservoirs, carried by the river waters over long distances. I first show that the making of hydraulic infrastructures in early republican Turkey was constitutive of both the nation state and the national “natural resources.” This process rendered water a natural resource to be known, controlled, and tapped into by the nation-state, while transforming forests into infrastructures protective of dams from erosion and sedimentation. The entangled history of hydraulic works and forestry further consolidated in the post-WWII era when “developing” the nation-state entangled with the idea of “developing” entire river basins. Lastly, I show that contemporary practices of sediment control in dams on the Çoruh River in Turkey are framed within the novel paradigm of participatory integrated watershed management. All in all, I argue that dam construction is a site where nature conservation converges with infrastructural expansion, taking different forms in historically and politically situated contexts. What sedimentation in dams – that seems to be “hidden” under the curtail of the reservoir – in fact reveals is a politics of hydraulic works where infrastructural and environmental interventions collide.

Geographical information system (GIS) has emerged as an efficient tool in delineation of drainage pattern and ground water potential and its planning. GIS and image processing techniques can be employed for the identification of morphological features and analyzing properties of basin. The morphometric parameters of basin can address linear, areal and relief aspects. The review related to 'Morphometric analysis of drainage basin using remote sensing and GIS techniques' is discussed in the present paper.

Most of the permafrost observatories in Northern Hemisphere show substantial warming of permafrost during the last 20 to 30 years. The magnitude of warming has varied with location, but was typically from 0.5 to 2°C at the depth of zero annual amplitude. Permafrost is already thawing in specific landscape settings within the southern part of the permafrost domain. Formation of new closed taliks and an increase in depth of pre-existing taliks has been observed in this area during the last 20 to 30 years. In the past, the thawing of permafrost and talik development was observed in the sporadic and less frequently in the discontinuous permafrost zones. However, very recent observations documented propagation of this process into continuous permafrost zone, especially in the Russian European North and in West Siberia. Projections of future changes in permafrost suggest that by the end of the 21st century, late-Holocene permafrost in the Northern Hemisphere may be actively thawing within...

A large number of borehole temperature measurements at different depths were obtained for the European Russian North permafrost regions starting in the 1960s. This data set is serving as a baseline against which to measure changes in near-surface permafrost temperatures and permafrost boundaries, to validate climate model scenarios, and can also be used for permafrost temperature reanalysis. Most of the observatories show a substantial warming during the last 30 to 35 years. The magnitude of warming varied with location, but was typically from 0.5 to 2 deg C at the depth of zero annual amplitude (e.g. Romanovsky et al., 2008). Melet Çayı, Orta ve Doğu Karadeniz bölümleri arasındaki sınırı oluşturmaktadır. Karadeniz Bölgesi’nin hem debi, hem de uzunluk açısından önemli akarsularından birisidir. Akarsu, taşıdığı alüvyonları ağız kısmında biriktirerek Ordu şehrinin üzerinde bulunduğu küçük bir deltayı meydana getirmiştir. Akarsuyun aşağı kesimlerinin yer yer bataklıklarla kaplı olmasının yanında taşkınların etkisinin fazla olması tarım ve yerleşim alanı olarak kullanılmasını kısıtlamıştır. Deltanın ıslah edilmesinden sonra bu alanlar önce tarıma sonra yerleşme ve sanayi sahasına dönüşmeye başlamıştır. Karadeniz kıyı kentlerini birleştiren sahil yolu deltanın kuzeyinden, yeni çevre yolu ise güneyinden geçmektedir. Bunun yanında deltanın doğusunda üniversite yerleşkesinin kurulması ve havalimanının yapılması bu alanların yoğun olarak yerleşmenin baskısı altında kalmasına neden olmaktadır. Günümüzde de hızlanarak devam eden bu değişim; havzanın bu kesimlerinin yoğun bir şekilde kullanılmasına neden olmuştur. Melet Çayı’nın sahip olduğu kuvvetli akımın yanında ilkbahar-yaz aylarında yağış ve kar erimeleriyle artan debi, taşkınları da beraberinde getirmektedir. Potansiyel taşkın etki
sahasına doğru genişleyen yerleşmeler ve tarım alanları bu durumdan en fazla etkilenenler arasındadır. Taşkından korunmak için kıyı setleri ve hız kesici kaya dolgu gibi birtakım önlemler alınmasına rağmen taşkınların önüne geçilememektedir. Bu önlemler dışında hem taşkın kontrolü hem de elektrik enerjisi elde etmek için 1990’lı yıllardan beri havzaya irili ufaklı birçok baraj yapılmıştır. Bu barajlardan ilki ve en büyüğü Topçam Barajı’dır. Bu çalışmada taşkın sahasına ait 1975-2018 yılları arasının (1975-1987-1990, 2000 ve 2018) hava fotoğrafları ve uydu görüntüleri analiz edilmiştir. Bunları desteklemek amacıyla sahada gözlemlerle birlikte yöre sakinleriyle görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda hem sahanın geçmişi ve bugünü hem de taşkından etkilenme durumu üzerinde durularak sorunlara dikkat çekilmiş ve alınabilecek önlemler belirtilmiştir.

Il bacino del fiume Adige (Etsch in tedesco, Adiç in ladino, Ades in trentino e Adexe in Veneto) si estende per ben 12178 km 2 collo-candosi al terzo posto per ampiezza dopo i bacini del Po e del Tevere e, per competen-za, interessa le province di Bolzano, Trento, Belluno, Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Rovigo, Venezia ed una piccola parte del territorio svizzero. È suddiviso convenzionalmente in sette principali sottobacini: Adige-Passi-rio 3173,7 km 2 , Isarco-Talvera 2058,9 km 2 , Rienza 2149,1 km 2, Noce 1385,6 km 2 , Avisio 939,5 km 2 , Adige-Ferina-Leno 1006,7 km 2 e Adige-Chiampo 1463,7 km 2 (Fig. 1). La val-le in cui scorre assume vari nomi: Val Ve-nosta tra la sorgente e Merano, Val d'Adige tra Merano e Rovereto, Vallagarina tra Ro-vereto e Verona ed, infine, Val Padana tra Verona e la foce. Nella parte montana del bacino vi sono 185 ghiacciai e 31 bacini artificiali che at-tualmente costituiscono la sua riserva idri-ca. L'estensione dei ghiacciai è di circa 212 km 2 , mentre i bacini artificiali hanno capa-cità di invaso variabili, dai valori massimi di 183 milioni di metri cubi (Mm 3) di S. Giusti-na e 118 Mm 3 del Resia, ai valori minimi 0.1 Mm 3 dei bacini della Val d'Ega e 0.09 Mm 3 del Sarentino, per un totale di 571 Mm 3 di cui 490 volume utile. Il fiume nasce da una sorgente a quota 1586 m s.l.m. vicino al lago di Resia e scorre per 409 km, secondo per lunghezza solo al Po, fino a sfociare nel mare Adriatico a porto Fossone nei pressi dei comuni di Albarella e Rosolina. In tutta la regione alpina il prin-cipale utilizzo dell'acqua è a scopo idroe-lettrico mentre nella parte valliva, dove il corso d'acqua è pensile, vi sono derivazio-ni sia a scopo idropotabile (circa 2,5 m 3 /s) che irriguo (circa 100 m 3 /s) che alimentano le reti dei Consorzi di Bonifica. Il territorio irrigato grazie ai 100 m 3 /s di acqua deriva-ti direttamente dal fiume Adige si estende per circa 4500 km 2 ed è in gran parte posto fuori del bacino (Fig. 2). La larghezza della sezione varia da un mi-nimo di di 40 m nel tratto Merano-Bolzano ad un massimo di ben 269 m tra i cigli ar-ginali nel comune di Zevio mentre la pen-denza di fondo del fiume varia, tra il lago di Resia e Borghetto (confine settentriona-Fig. 1-Sottobacini di primo grado nel bacino idrografico del fiume Adige.
