Le Liber Insularum Archipelagi de Cristoforo Buondelmonti (1420) : la cartographie comme outil de propagande et de légitimation territoriale

Le terme isolario décrit un ouvrage rassemblant des représentations cartographiques d’îles et de villes côtières. Considéré comme le pionnier du genre, Buondelmonti débuta une tradition qui, pendant plus de trois siècles, donna une importance particulière à la représentation de l’espace grec méditerranéen. Face à l’avancée de l’Empire ottoman, qui convoitait ces territoires autant pour des raisons stratégiques et économiques qu’idéologiques et politiques, il devenait impératif pour les nations occidentales chrétiennes de conserver et légitimer leurs possessions territoriales en Méditerranée orientale.

L’isolario de Buondelmonti joue un rôle significatif dans cet effort de réappropriation du territoire. S’inscrivant dans les débuts de l’humanisme, l’ouvrage tente aussi de faire revivre les voyages racontés par Homère et Virgile et rappelle l’importance de la Méditerranée pour l’héritage antique dont se réclament les Latins. L’étude cet objet nous permettra de voir par quelles stratégies formelles et symboliques l’image cartographique véhicule les intérêts et les impératifs de la société dont elle est issue, et de considérer le Liber Insularum Archipelagi comme une expression de la complexité des relations entre Ottomans et Chrétiens dans la Méditerranée orientale de la fin du Moyen-Âge.

Présentation et conclusions du colloque sur le réseau de Marguerite de Navarre après 1535, organisé à Tours, au Centre d’Études Supérieures de la Renaissance, les 5 et 6 octobre 2018, avec Stéphan Geonget, Marie-Bénédicte Le Hir et Louise Daubigny. Les résultats et les propositions scientifiques formulées dans les différentes communications permettent de dresser une cartographie des villes sollicitées par ce réseau et d’en questionner les enjeux aussi bien historiques, évangéliques que littéraires.

The present study centres on the definition of two ways of referring to objects in space: one, which could be called an «egocentric system», which positions the objects and determines their spatial relationships in terms of the observer; the other, called an «allocentric system», where the reference is not the positioning of objects in relation to the observer but in a distinct spatial system, external to the observer. Cartography (both historical and contemporary) is a perfect field for the application and study of the descriptive and representative modalities developed in the field of «Spatial cognition» studies, because by its nature it is based on three things: the perception of space; the idea that we have of that space; and above all on our communication and orientation skills. The study here performs an experimental test of these modalities on the so-called «Almagià map» of the Verona region. The approaches and the tools of «Spatial cognition» make it possible to derive a completely new interpretation of the whole composition.

The Philology of a Map. Studying Old Cartography Using the Method of Textual Criticism: the Case of Toponymy of the Map of the Principality of Polotsk by S. Pachołowiecki from 1580.

The aim of this paper is to make an experimental application of textual criticism (the stemma method or Lachmann's method) in the analyses of early-modern maps. It is supposed to verify whether, and to what extent, the means developed by philologists to establish how texts were transmitted in medieval codices, can be applied to study the transmission of geographic knowledge on early-modern maps. The author postulates that well-tried procedures should be used in studies of textual parts of old maps. They allow the formulation of filiation hypotheses. These procedures consist of collating extant texts and detecting mistakes that indicate, connect or divide individual branches of tradition.

The subject analysed is the toponymy appearing on the map "Descriptio Ducatus Polocensis" (The Description of the Principality of Polotsk) by Stanisław Pachołowiecki, engraved in Rome by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri in 1580 and on maps stemming from the same archetype. The author compiles a complete index of toponyms and hydronyms in transliteration and transcription, identifies them and provides the names in Belarussian, Russian and Polish. He also annotates each of them with a short topographic-historical description. Taking into consideration the state of the art regarding mutual relations between cartographic works drawing on Pachołowiecki’s map of the Principality of Polotsk, he proposes a hypothetic stemma depicting the genealogy of the toponymic image of the Principality of Polotsk on 16th and 17th century maps. The analysis also includes four other relics: a manuscript map of Stanisław Sulimowski from 1580, a printed map "Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae, Livoniae et Moscoviae decriptio" (A Description of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Livonia and Muscovy) by Maciej Strubicz from 1589; "Lithuania" by Gerard Mercator from 1595; and the so-called Radziwiłł’s Map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from 1613.

Based on the analysis of the toponymic corpus of all these maps, Franczak proves that Pachołowiecki’s printed map from 1580 did not have a direct effect on the later cartographic works. Such an influence was, however, exerted by its manuscript original, which shaped the image of the Lithuanian-Muscovite borderland in European cartography of the 17th and 18th centuries through the maps of Sulimowski and Strubicz.

Een beeld scheppen van het cultuurlandschap van Zeeuws-Vlaanderen omstreeks het tijdstip van de grote overstromingen op het einde van de veertiende en het begin van de vijftiende eeuw is vanuit archeologische invalshoek niet eenvoudig, laat staan dat er grip te verkrijgen is op de geografische situatie net voor of na de Sint-Elisabethsvloed van 1404. De oorzaak is voor een deel te zoeken bij de militaire inundaties op het einde van de zestiende eeuw (vanaf 1583-1585) en de herstelperiode achteraf, die het huidige landschap verder zouden bepalen. De toen ontstane stroomgeulen hebben vermoedelijk heel wat erosie en sedimentatie met zich meegebracht. Sommige polders werden reeds herbedijkt tijdens het Twaalfjarig Bestand (1609-1621), de meeste werden echter voltooid na de Vrede van Münster (1648). Kenmerkend is het rationele en veelal geometrische verkavelingspatroon: een strak wegennet en perceelspatroon, evenwijdig of haaks op elkaar georiënteerd. De initiatiefnemers hadden hierbij nauwelijks rekening gehouden met de toenmalige cultuurlandschappelijke indeling. De grote geulen bleven nog een tijdje open en werden later pas afgedamd en ingepolderd. De drastische landschapstransformatie, de (overwegende) discontinuïteit in de bewoning en een lacune aan archeologische vindplaatsen en structuren suggereren een grotendeels verdwenen (of verloren?) middeleeuws cultuurlandschap. Pogingen tot reconstructie kunnen slechts tot een 'papieren landschap' leiden dat elke band met het materiële heeft verloren, althans, zo dacht men erover. Een diepgaander onderzoek leert evenwel dat deze uitgestrekte inundaties en de herstructurering achteraf nochtans ook voordelen met zich meebrachten voor reconstructie van het middeleeuwse cultuurlandschap. In onderhavig artikel willen we aantonen dat het huidige landschap inderdaad nog heel wat middeleeuwse structuren herbergt, die hetzij verborgen liggen of als dusdanig nooit herkend werden. Door associatie en een interactieve studie van deze structuren kan toch enig inzicht verkregen worden in de aard van het cultuurlandschap en de overstromingsproblematiek omstreeks 1400. Vooraleer hierop in te gaan, is het nodig om kort de problematiek met betrekking tot de studie van de materiële cultuur te belichten aangaande de periode vóór de militaire inundaties.

From 4 to 7 May map specialists from Belgium, Italy and Great Britain met at the Academia Belgica in Rome to exchange ideas on the so-called IATO atlases, otherwise known as Lafreri atlases.
This contribution focused on an hitherto unkonwn collection of maps gathered between the half to XVI century and the half of the XVII century.

From 4 to 7 May map specialists from Belgium, Italy and Great Britain met at the Academia Belgica in Rome to exchange ideas on the so-called IATO atlases, otherwise known
as Lafreri atlases.
This contribution focused the importance of the "Priviliegio" asket to Venetian Senate and Roman Papal Court to protect the conceptual ideas and the formal aspect of maps in Rome and Venice during the early Renaissance.
A sample of the way of draw local maps from larger geographical context is provided with the Map of America by Paolo Forlani.
