Resumen El Imperio inca organizó las poblaciones conquistadas en distintas jurisdicciones regidas por el sistema decimal , transformando los antiguos curacazgos o señoríos en nuevas provincias o unidades administrativas donde las autoridades locales perdieron, mantuvieron o amplificaron su poder regional. El sistema de encomiendas implementado por los primeros conquistadores hispanos habría instrumentalizado, en ciertas regiones, la organización política vigente en los tiempos del Tawantinsuyu como una estrategia destinada a mantener la cohesión de las unidades sociales (tributarios) que sostenían la economía en cada repartimiento y el pago de tributos que cada curaca debía entregar al encomendero anualmente. El estudio etnohistórico de Tarapaca (19º-21º Lat. S) permite abordar aspectos relativos a la política expansiva cusqueña en este territorio, la manipulación hispana de las estructuras políticas heredadas, la organización de sus poblaciones, asentamientos y autoridades, y la estructura económica regional en los siglos XV y XVI, demostrando la vigencia de antiguas hipótesis de investigación y el grado de convergencia y singularidad de la historia política de esta región en el contexto de los Andes Centro Sur. Abstract The Inca Empire reorganized conquered populations in different jurisdictions imposing the decimal system over local chieftainships or curacazgos, creating new provinces or administrative units where the local authorities lost, maintained or amplified their regional power. The system of encomiendas implemented by early Hispanic conquerors instrumentalized the indigenous political organization active in Inca times as a strategy to maintain the cohesion of the social units (tributaries) that supported the economy in each repartimiento and the payment of taxes that curacas had to give annually to the encomendero. The ethnohistorical study of Tarapaca (Lat. S 19º-21º) allows us to point out crucial aspects related to Inca expansionary policy in this territory, the manipulation of inherited political structures by the Spaniards, the organization of its populations, settlements and authorities, as well as the economic structure regional in the 15th and 16th centuries, demonstrating the originality of some old research hypotheses and the degree of convergence and uniqueness of the political history of this region in the context of the South Central Andes.

Spatial turn of the late XX – early XXI c. in history and other humanities has significant-ly influenced the updating of research problems and approaches aimed at a diverse understanding of spatial structures in societies of the past and the present. More and more confidently, the world is perceived as a space of interaction in the great time of History. The consequences of the spatial turn were discussed during the International Scientific Conference “Spaces of histories and the history of spaces: metamorphoses of perception, appropriation, creation”, which took place at the Institute of International Relations and World History of Lobachevsky’s Nizhny Novgorod State University in November 2018. The topic has become central to this issue of our Journal. The detailed texts of the reports delivered at the conference formed the basis of several sections. This article raises the issue of subject fields and methodological difficulties of different versions of global, regional and local history, and discusses the role of some spatial metaphors in historical knowledge.
Пространственный поворот конца XX – начала XXI в. в истории и других гуманитарных науках существенно повлиял на обновление исследовательской проблема-тики и подходов, нацеленных на разностороннее понимание спатиальных структур в обществах прошлого и современности. Все чаще и увереннее мир воспринимается как пространство взаимодействия в большом времени Истории. Обсуждению последствий пространственного поворота была посвящена Международная научная конференция «Пространства историй и истории пространств: метаморфозы восприятия, присвоение, созидание», которая состоялась в Институте международных отношений и мировой истории Нижегородского государственного университета им. Н.И. Лобачевского в ноябре 2018 года. Эта тема стала главной в настоящем выпуске «Диалога со временем». Развернутые тексты прозвучавших на конференции докладов, составили основу нескольких рубрик. В настоящей статье ставится вопрос о предметных полях и методологических трудностях раз-личных версий глобальной, региональной и локальной истории, а также рассматривается роль некоторых пространственных метафор в историческом познании.

Ministering Angels is a peer-review publication that tells the story of conservative country women doing their patriotic duty in an outpost of the British Empire. From 1914 Camden district women joined local Red Cross branches and their affiliates in the towns and villages around the colonial estate of the Macarthur family at Camden Park. They sewed, knitted and cooked for God, King and Country throughout the First and Second World Wars, and during the years in-between. They ran stalls and raffles, and received considerable community support through cash donations from individuals and community organisations for Red Cross activities.

Using the themes of soldier and civilian welfare, patriotism, duty, sacrifice, motherhood, class and religion, the narrative explores how the placed-based nature of the Red Cross branch network provided an opportunity for the organisation to harness parochialism and localism for national patriotic purposes. The work shows how a local study links the Camden district Red Cross with the broader issues within Australian history and debates involving local history, philanthropy, feminism, conservatism, religion and other areas, while at the same time illustrating the multi-layered nature of the issues that shape global, national and regional history that can impact rural volunteering.

The book delves into the story of how Camden’s Edwardian women, the Macarthur Onslows and others of their ilk, provided leadership at a local, state and national level and created ground-breaking opportunities that empowered women to exercise their agency by undertaking patriotic activities for the first time. In their wake Camden women created the most important voluntary organisation in district history, a small part of the narrative of the Australian Red Cross, arguably the country’s most important not-for-profit organisation. Their stories were the essence of place, and the success of the district branches meant that over time home front volunteering became synonymous with the Red Cross.

Ministering Angels is a local Red Cross study of volunteering in war and peace that provides a small window into the national and transnational perspectives of one of the world’s most important humanitarian organisations.
