ROMAN TUNISIA

A t the 1878 Berlin Conference, England and Germany agreed to allow France to seize Tunisia. From 1881-the official date of the French protectorate in Tunisia-archaeology ensued. The conqueror, who already had fifty years of experience in occupied Algeria, did not hesitate to exploit pre-Islamic sites, particularly Roman and Christian. This article will present observations on French archaeological literature of the nineteenth and early twentieth century, and on how the campaigns were carried out. Since documentation for this period is difficult to examine, only a few selected cases will be investigated. It is useful to begin with a history of archaeological travel to the Regency of Tunis, which contributed in direct and indirect ways to the establishment of the protectorate.

Sundials in Roman and Byzantine Mosaics (1st – 9th Century AD). A scientific monograph. The sundials on ancient mosaics have not been the subject of scientific studies so far. The author has gathered together  in this  publication  the sundials  already known (Torre Anunzaiata, Sarsina, Trier, Saint-Romain-en-Gal, Antiochia and Brading; Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9) and those which have  not  previously  been  identified.  Thanks  to  the author’s  new  identifcations,  the  catalogue  has  been enlarged  by  six  new  sundials (Grand,Tartus, Antiochia – interpreted by H. Pamir; Figs.  3, 6,  8, and 10. Tayibat al-Imam, Jerusalem and Umm al-Rasas (Sebastis); Figs. 10, 11, 12) and three monumental gnomes-columns with multiple functions that were used as monumental sundials [Madaba (Jerusalem), Umm al-Rasas (Kastron Mefaa) and Rome (Jerusalem); Figs. 13–15]. In addition, recognizing fully John H. Humphrey’s  interpretations,  the  author  enriches  the catalogue  by  eight  ancient  mosaic  representations  of obelisks in  circuses (Lyon, Barcelona, Volubilis, Piazza Armerina - two mosaics, Girona, Carthage and Gafsa; Figs.  16–23).  They  performed the roles of monumental sundials. In this way, the catalogue includes  twenty-three  mosaics with  the representations of sundials. They come from the Western and Eastern Provinces of the Roman Empire. The first mosaic is dated to the beginning of the 1st century AD and the last dates to the 9th century AD. The author, after  a  short  description  of each monument,  summarizes the issue discussing the role of sundials in Roman and Byzantine society, their complex signifcance and symbolic dificult linked with the progress of time on which nature and human life are dependent. In questo lavoro l'autore ricostruisce il contesto archeologico completo e particolareggiato di quei luoghi di culto tipici del mondo fenicio d'Occidente chiamati tofet e ne affronta lo studio dei culti. Si tratta di santuari a cielo aperto, che consistono principalmente in un campo di urne interrate contenenti ceneri di bambini e/o di animali accompagnate da stele o cippi votivi, a volte iscritti. La natura di questo tipo di santuario, che certamente ha le sue radici nell'area fenicia e che in Occidente è dedicato al dio Ba'al per lo più con l'epiteto di Hammon, è tuttora discusso in modo anche aspro, così come controversi sono i riti che vi erano svolti. Il lavoro di D'Andrea si concentra sui santuari individuati in Africa del Nord. Si tratta, nell'area mediterranea di cultura fenicio-punica, dei luoghi di culto più numerosi e omogenei tra di loro, che presentano inoltre un interesse specifico perché si sviluppano per un arco di tempo molto lungo – dall'VIII secolo a.C. fino all'epoca romana – con una continuità notevole e una concentrazione soprattutto in periodo recente. Una raccolta completa come questa di tutte le testimonianze archeologiche, accompagnata da una valutazione esauriente ed equilibrata, non era stata finora compiuta. L'Autore non si limita a riunire i dati, sito per sito, ma li analizza criticamente e li discute, presentando una ricostruzione dei diversi tipi di tofet, del loro sviluppo nel tempo e dei cambiamenti che presentano, coerenti seppur vari da luogo a luogo, e che investono in particolare anche i riti e i culti praticati. La corretta metodologia con la quale è condotta la ricerca, la quantità dei dati presentati e i risultati ottenuti in seguito al loro esame particolareggiato fanno di questo lavoro uno strumento prezioso per chiunque si occupi di archeologia fenicio-punica, specie per quanto riguarda la situazione complessa dei territori dell'Africa del Nord.

On Friday 23rd November, the Tunisian-British Utica Project will host a day of talks on current excavation and survey work at Utica.

Talks will be given by the French, Spanish and British teams working at the site with the Tunisian Institut National de Patrimoine about their 2012 seasons. These talks will be followed by a reception to celebrate the project and the site, and to welcome our Tunisian, French and Spanish colleagues and friends.

The talks will take place in the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, 66 St Giles’, Oxford (OX1 3LU) between 2 and 6 pm.
