Public Archaeology

This paper arises from the experience of the participation of a group of archaeologists in the drafting of the Landscape Plan of the Tuscany Region in the years 2011-2015. In the light of the latest experience in the field of applied archaeological research (Landscape Plans) it can be said that the ordering of archaeological record and its dynamic processing can result in more extensive developments. The promotion of appropriate insights can be the starting point for cognitive pathways aimed at describing (even very complex) planning problems inherent in the history of individual and specific geographic areas. Historical and archaeological reconstruction therefore actively and directly contributes to the evaluation of the critical issues present in the different horizons, takes part in the process of building the disciplines of use and helps to better target the pursuit of quality objectives in future planning.

Il contributo nasce dalla presentazione della relazione "Per una cultura partecipata: l'esperienza di Archeotipo srl e l'archeodromo di Poggibonsi (SI)" proposta nell'ambito  del workshop “Smart value. Bridging theories, strategies and practices in valuing cultural heritage”, workshop nazionale sull'esperienza degli stakeholder nella valutazione del patrimonio culturale, svoltosi presso l'università di Macerata il 25 maggio 2017.
L'articolo intende presentare il caso dell'archeodromo di Poggibonsi valutandolo nelle sue modalità di gestione e in quelle di comunicazione e interazione con il pubblico.

Il settimo e ultimo capitolo si concentra sulla finalità ultima di un progetto di cartografia archeologica, vale a dire la gestione pubblica del dato.
In prima battuta si affronta il tema dei Piani paesaggistici, la loro storia e il ruolo che al loro interno devono poter svolgere i Beni archeologici, analizzandone le potenzialità strategiche e i più comuni errori nella loro gestione (o mancata tale).
Seguono alcune riflessioni sul tema della gestione dei Beni Culturali e dell'archeologia pubblica, puntando l'attenzione sulla sua strategica valenza sociale.

All’interno dell’opera di revisione del Piano Paesaggistico, l’unità di ricerca “Beni Archeologici” ha avuto il compito di delineare lo status della conoscenza archeologica del territorio e conseguentemente di costruire le sintesi interpretative degli assetti paesaggistici  dalla preistoria al medioevo, definite come “processi storici di territorializzazione”.
Il contributo intende illustrare la metodologia e gli strumenti utilizzati per la gestione dell'informazione archeologica regionale all'interno della costruzione dei quadri conoscitivi del nuovo piano paesaggistico toscano.
Intende inoltre proporre alcune riflessioni strategiche e operative come testimonianza del lavoro e delle problematiche affrontate, al fine di fornire il proprio contributo al dibattito sull'uso pubblico-amministrativo dei dati archeologici, sforzandosi di individuare nuovi possibili scenari ed evoluzioni, e offrendo al tempo stesso un bilancio finale, non mancando di suggerire possibili e auspicabili obiettivi futuri.

Pubblicazione dedicata alle finalità e agli aspetti metodologici e tecnici del progetto Carta Archeologica della Provincia di Siena (direzione scientifica Prof. Marco Valenti): strumenti (GIS, cartografia numerica, remote sensing e strumenti di rilevazione digitale) e ambiti applicativi (scientifici, amministrativi e pubblici) che gli archeologi possono mettere a disposizione della comunità intesa in senso lato, dai ricercatori agli amministratori fino ai comuni cittadini.

Sometimes our work takes us to unexpected places. My current postdoctoral project at Los Alamos National Laboratory focuses on the Vigil y Montoya homestead, a Hispanic-owned homestead occupied from 1912-1943, and an under-represented period of history of the Pajarito Plateau in northern New Mexico. This research has been greatly enhanced through the chance meeting of a direct descendant and subsequent collaboration with the local lineal descendants. This poster summarizes the recent work at the homestead, including survey, excavation, artifact analysis, and drone work. I discuss the fascinating spatial patterns, issues with multiple occupations, important facts learned through exchange with descendants, and even how certain artifacts can be attributed to named individuals. Collaborations such as these are unparalleled as additional lines of evidence and have larger impacts on the field of historical archaeology and archaeology in general; most importantly highlighting the need for and returns of collaborating with descendant communities and constructing richer narratives of the past together.

This chapter is about everyday encounters while conducting research in India. It interrogates those moments of feeling like I belonged, like I had a stake, and how that might change through time. It is about intimacy, it is about friendships, and it is about betrayal. Ultimately, it is also about how we do archaeology. There was an everydayness to interactions with my colleagues, research partners, staff members, and people who became friends; this chapter reflects upon how that quotidian interaction became an integral part of the project. It was also that everyday intimacy that allowed for a certain trust to develop that was not one hinged on labor but on living together. In some sense, our social and emotional relationships were constitutive of the community-based and participatory archaeological practice we were engaged within: we were the project and the project was us. Thus, once the project ended, so did our made pathways of relational intimacy. The traces of the project, however, were heavy and long-standing, emerging and revealing feelings of betrayal that now, with over two decades of experiencing such work, I can see as the emotional labor of archaeology.

UCH managers are increasingly aware of the limitations of excluding public participation in heritage management both in terms of their own limited resources and need for wide public political support. This article assesses a pilot project in South Australia to train citizen scientists to record and monitor underwater cultural heritage sites. The results reinforced the need to ensure the data collected is robust and meaningful, and that citizen scientists know their contribution is valid; the need to help citizen scientists
interpret data and foster peer-to-peer learning, and highlighted the importance of open-source data for site conditions.

„Participatory governance of cultural heritage offers opportunities to foster democratic participation, sustainability, and social cohesion and to face the social, political, and demographic challenges of today.“ Dieser Satz aus den „Council conclusions on cultural heritage as a strategic resource for a sustainable Europe“ des Europäischen Rates aus dem Jahr 2014 zeigt, dass Kulturerbe zunehmend als geteilte Ressource mit einem über das Wissenschaftliche hinausgehenden Mehrwert verstanden wird. Dieser wird zwar immer öfter in öffentlichen Statements, Ausschreibungen und auch Forschungsanträgen verlautbart, jedoch kaum tatsächlich nachgewiesen. Krijn H. J. Boom nahm dies zum Anlass seiner 2018 auf Englisch publizierten Dissertation, mit der er erste wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu diesem Forschungsdesiderat liefert.
