Dalam Book Review ini akan dibahas beberapa subbab yang ditulis oleh Peter Burke dalam buku berjudul "Sejarah dan Teori Sosial". Adapun subbab-subbab tersebut lebih khusus akan menyoroti bab I “Teoritisi dan Sejarawan” yang terdiri dari: Dialog Si Tuli, Penolakan terhadap Masa Lalu, Kebangkitan Sejarah Sosial, dan Konvergensi Teori dan Sejarah.

RESUMEN: Este artículo explica el momento historiográfico en que se publicó L’homme espagnol. Analiza las aportaciones científicas más importantes de ese momento en el campo de la historia de la cultura popular. Se subrayan aquí los elementos que contribuyeron a construir las bases de la moderna historiografía sobre esta materia, así como su vigencia en la investigación actual para superar acríticos lugares comunes, arquetipos o prejuicios.

RESÚME: Cet article explique le moment historiographique pendant lequel L’homme espagnol a été publié. Il analyse les contributions scientifiques les plus importantes de ce moment dans le domaine de l’histoire de la culture populaire. Les éléments qui ont contribué à jeter les bases de l’historiographie moderne en la matière sont soulignés ici, ainsi que leur validité dans les recherches actuelles pour surmonter les lieux communs, les préjugés ou les stéréotypes.

ABSTRACT: This article explains the historiographic moment in which L’homme espagnol was published analyzing the most important scientific contributions of that moment in the field of the history of popular culture. The elements that contributed to building the foundations of modern historiography on this matter are underlined here, as well as their validity in current research to overcome uncritical archetypes and prejudices.

Orientation in time and space is closely linked with the legitimacy of social and political order: Governments invest in museums and monuments to link sacrifices of the past with those required in the future; politicians make use of historical parallels to reduce contingency in decision-making processes or to claim legitimacy for their acts; and historians support or criticize governments by drawing historical parallels. All these ways of dealing with history, myths or invented traditions are interrelating experiences and expectations in different but meaningful ways – thus, the constructing and making of history are somehow inter-twisted. What is accepted as meaningful history depends largely on what can and cannot be said, but even more important for a working historical analogy or prefiguration is that the past still has to be (made) virulent. In sum, the introduction interrelates the chapters but also discusses how history can be revived to construct continuities and breaks by interrelating past and future in different ways.

RESUMEN:
La Historia Cultural nunca ha sido tan popular como hoy en los círculos académicos y quizá más allá de ellos también. La que se ha llamado " Nueva Historia Cultural " en particular, florece en sus diferentes manifestaciones y podría afirmarse que, en estos tiempos, casi todo parece tener su historia cultural. La intención del autor no es, ni celebrar la historia cultural, ni discutir su historia sino problematizarla. Por lo tanto este artículo analiza los problemas de la Historia Cultural y concluye retornando a sus aspectos positivos, sus fortalezas y sus posibilidades para los diálogos y encuentros con otros lugares, entre diferentes clases sociales, regiones, sexos y entre el campo y la ciudad. Así entendida, la Historia Cultural no es más que una parte de la Historia de lo que los franceses llaman o llamaron " Historia Total " histoire totale. // ABSTRACT:
Cultural history has never been so popular, in academic circles and perhaps beyond them as well. The so-called ‘new cultural history’ in particular is flourishing in its different forms. Indeed, almost everything seems to be having its cultural history written these days. The intention of the article is neither to celebrate cultural history nor to discuss its history; it seems more useful to problematize it. The analysis will fall on problems and will conclude by returning to the positive aspects of cultural history, its strengths and its possibilities for ‘dialogues’ and ‘encounters’: not only with other places, but also encounters between social classes, between regions, between the sexes, between town and country. This is as it should be, for cultural history is no more than a part of history, of what the French call or called ‘total history’, histoire totale.

No hay más acuerdo sobre lo que constituye la historia cultural
que sobre lo que constituye la cultura. Hace más de cuarenta
años, dos estudiosos norteamericanos se propusieron registrar las
variaciones en el uso de ese término en inglés y reunieron más de
doscientas definiciones diferentes. Si se tomaran en cuenta otras
lenguas y las últimas décadas sería fácil reunir muchas más. Por
tanto, en la investigación de nuestro tema quizá convenga adaptar
la definición de los existencialistas y decir que la historia cultural
no tiene esencia. Sólo puede definirse en términos de su
propia historia.
¿Cómo se puede escribir la historia de algo que carece de una
identidad estable? Es algo así como intentar atrapar una nube
con un cazamariposas.

This PhD dissertation argues that the practical applications of Religionswissenschaft (Scientific Study of Religions) must be seen as the third branch of this discipline. This is based on the classic taxonomy of Joachim Wach of 1924 which originally divides the Religionswissenschaft in two branches: a systematic branch and an empirical branch. As a scientific, secular, autonomous and (trans)modern discipline, Religionswissenschaft was created between the 1850s and 1870s in Europe aiming to be an empirical-theoretical science, a solely base science, leaving the concerns on application to other professionals. Contrasting with this dominant view, more than a century of questioning has accumulated. So, in the XXI century, the appearance of more explicit reflections regarding the scientific literature of the area on the dimension of its applicability and professional performance of scholar of the religions beyond the Academy. Thus, the material object of this research is the literature on Applied Study of Religions. The present research aims to present proposals for the application of the Study of Religions, in view of the identified gap in the literature on the Applied Study of Religions. Our central basis is: L. Fleck's theory of science; the historical-philosophical classification of sciences in C. Peirce, N. Roll-Hansen, and M. Bunge; and the notion of praxeology in the modern sciences of H. Japiassu. As a method, we carried out a bibliographic review. We also use reflections of inductive reasoning for the construction of proposals for professional application for scholars of religions that solve problems pointed out in the literature. All this enabled the construction of theoretical and historical systematizations and the construction of Applied Study of Religions. It aims to produce solutions to social problems, based on research in the Study of Religions and applied through the professional practice of scholars of religion, we propose three fields of action: (1) education, as teachers of a secular education about religions; (2) health, as part of multidisciplinary teams that assist teams of health professionals; and (3) public policies, through the formulation and assistance of public policies in the area of culture.

Problemas da História Cultural-Peter Burke O capítulo do livro discorre sobre as tendências existentes na História Cultural, onde as fontes e suposições deste estudo precisam ser questionadas, citando autores e suas contribuições, que nos leva a inúmeras reflexões. Os clássicos revisitados: *Sobre os contribuintes da história cultural temos Jacob Burckhardt e Johan Huizinga: Burckhardt enfatiza seus estudos sobre a esfera do não coletivo que ele chamava de individualismo incorrigível. Burckhardt em uma das suas obras, um livro sobre a História da Grécia, defendia a Confiabilidade Relativa-no caso, a história política da Grécia era cheia de incertezas pq os gregos exageravam e até mentiam. Só que por outro lado, a história cultural tem um grau de certeza, pois na sua grande parte ela é a partir de conteúdos\materiais gerados de forma não intencional, desinteressado ou até mesmo involuntário por fontes e documentos. *E como crítico ao Burckhardt, temos Huizinga que acreditava ser conveniente ao historiador delinear uma maneira individual de pensar, o conjunto de opiniões ou preconceitos que comandam o pensamento de um indivíduo ou grupo social (ele fala isso na sua obra Outono da Idade Média). O historiador cultural deve resistir a tentação de não tratar os textos e imagens de um certo período como espelhos, reflexos não problemáticos do seu tempo. (p. 2) Burckhardt também tem certa razão no seu argumento a favor do Testemunho Involuntário: testemunhas do passado podem nos dizer coisas que não sabiam que sabiam. Assim como historiadores políticos ou econômicos, os historiadores culturais têm que praticar a crítica das fontes, perguntar por que um dado texto ou imagem veio a existir e se por exemplo seu propósito era convencer o público a realizar alguma ação. *Em relação ao método, Burckhardt e Huizinga foram muitas vezes criticados-chamados de impressionistas, anedóticos (fúteis). O texto questiona "A história cultural está condenada a ser impressionista? Se não, qual alternativa?" Uma possibilidade é o que os franceses chamam de história serial, ou seja, uma análise de uma série cronológica de documentos. No caso, a história cultural pode ser tanto impressionista quanto serial, partindo de um pressuposto que a análise de toda realidade do passado quer nos mostrar algo e o estudo científico como um todo-uma dialoga com a outra.
