Oulipo

Étymologiquement, l’influence renvoie à l’action cachée des astres sur le destin des hommes. Dès lors, parler d’un lecteur sous influence revient à considérer le texte comme l’instrument d’une possible manipulation. Parce qu’elles conjuguent régime démocratique et avènement des mass media, nos sociétés s’avèrent particulièrement sensibles à la puissance d’influence des productions culturelles. Face à l’environnement médiatique, les marges de manœuvre du lecteur constituent un enjeu hautement politique. Dans ce champ d’interrogations, quelle est la position de la littérature ? Dès les années 1960, des écrivains se saisissent de la question de l’autorité et tentent de dénouer les implicites par lesquels le lecteur se soumet à une instance toujours invisible et omnipotente. En cela, cet article illustre dans quelle mesure les conceptions de la lecture littéraire rejoignent une réflexion politique autour de la fabrique du consentement.

Ursprünglich waren »W oder die Kindheitserinnerung« und »Versuch, einen Platz in Paris zu erfassen« als Teile eines großen Memoirenprojekts angelegt, das den Arbeitstitel »Orte« trug: Neben die Beschreibung bestimmter Pariser Plätze sollte die historische Erinnerung an diese Orte treten. Das Projekt »Orte« konnte Perec, der 1982 mit nicht einmal 46 Jahren starb, nicht mehr vollenden; was bleibt, sind Einzelteile. Auf Deutsch liegt sein Gesamtwerk bislang nur ausschnittsweise und auf verschiedene Verlage verstreut vor. Dabei gäbe es viel zu entdecken. Denn seine Erzählungen und Romane sind nicht nur witzige, berührende und originelle Experimente mit Erzählformen. Seine autobiographischen Texte reflektieren immer auch den Verlust und die Rekonstruktion einer eigenen Geschichte.

Mentir à un ami, lorgner sur le jeu de son adversaire, bluffer, donner le change, en conter, maquiller son existence, se faire passer pour un autre : la tentation est grande. Nombreux sont ceux qui, dans ce livre, y succomberont pour vous.
Vous y découvrirez que l’imposture est orgueil, folie, maladie mais aussi transgression et bravoure. Telle la singulière révélation de la littérature au sujet des pouvoirs de l’imposture. Vous apprendrez ainsi ce qui lie l’imposteur et l’enquêteur, comment le désir de se travestir et celui de savoir épousent des logiques proches. Vous verrez surtout ce que les œuvres font de cette imposture, comment elles s’y adonnent pour piéger leurs plus méritants lecteurs. En chemin, vous ferez de surprenantes rencontres aux côtés de Poe, James, Borges, Nabokov, Robbe-Grillet, Butor, Perec, Vila-Matas : des psychanalystes trompés ou meurtriers, des joueurs d’échecs névrosés, des puzzles dont les pièces ne s’emboîtent pas, des labyrinthes sans issue, des tricheurs et des beaux parleurs, des Sherlock Holmes qui déraisonnent, mais aussi quelques manuscrits assassins à ne pas mettre entre toutes les mains. Jedinstvenost skupine Oulipo osnovane 1960. godine u Francuskoj zadržala se do danas, a njome je potaknuto određenje književnosti ograničenja. Takav pristup proizvodnje i čitanja književnosti počiva na konceptu ograničenja, prepoznatljivoj ideji skupine Oulipo. Najpoznatiji su oulipovci koji su svoje tekstove oblikovali ograničenjima Raymond Queneau, Georges Perec, Noël Arnaud, Italo Calvino, a ograničenjima danas pišu i autori koji nisu članovi skupine Oulipo. Ivana Buljubašić u suvremenoj hrvatskoj književnosti pronalazi primjere književnosti ograničenja, i to u tekstovima Jasne Horvat, Krešimira Bagića, Dubravke Oraić Tolić, Luke Paljetka te Milka Valenta. Knjiga je prvi pregled djelovanja skupine Oulipo i njezine poetike u hrvatskoj znanosti o književnosti te dokaz da koncept ograničenja živi i onkraj oulipovske prakse.

Le goût affirmé de s’affranchir des taxinomies disciplinaires ne s’est jamais démenti au sein de l’Oulipo, ensemble disparate d’érudits. De fait, l’Ouvroir compose avec une série d’ambiguïtés qui lui sont constitutives, cela notamment dans les relations entretenues vis-à-vis des savoirs. Une première polarité est repérable dans les origines ésotériques qu’il partage avec le Collège de ‘Pataphysique, société basée sur la connivence érudite mais surtout sur le goût de la farce et de la mystification. Ensuite, la relation privilégiée que le groupe entretient avec les sciences dures, et notamment les mathématiques, est à ressaisir dans la perspective d’un ethos collectivement configuré et distingué dans le champ littéraire. Enfin, davantage que les savoirs mathématiques, la contrainte se présente comme une propédeutique à la lecture et surtout le moyen d’une écriture démocratique en contexte technologique fort.
ABSTRACT
Oulipo’s trend to overcome academic field’s borders and taxonomies has never been questioned. De facto, this motley assemblage has to deal with a great deal of constitutive ambiguities, in its relation to Knowledge. A first polarity is detectable in the original relations Oulipo shares with the College of ‘Pataphysics, a semi-secret society, not only based upon very erudite connivance but also a strong taste for farce and mystification. Another element to enhance is the privileged relations Oulipians have with sciences and above all: mathematics. These are to be understood in the special perspective of a collectively configured ethos, especially designed to obtain distinction in the literary field. With the Oulipo, literary/mathematical constraints states themselves as pragmatic and ironic propaedeutic to reading and writing in a techno-democratic era.

This is a critical essay on Korean experimental novelist Kim Taeyong and his distinctive literary oeuvre. Commissioned by the novelist and written in the wake of his winning 2016 Kim Hyun Literary Award, one of the most prestigious literary awards in Korea in commemoration of a legendary literary critic Kim Hyun (1942-1990), this article investigates his deconstructive writing in terms of 'linguistic ruins' as well as his interest in contingency [偶有 which is a homonym of 牛乳, meaning 'milk/ing']. By situating his works within a larger geneaolgy of contemporary Korean literature since 2000, along with the renewed interest in OULIPO (Ouvroir de Littérature Potentielle/Workshop for Potential Literature) in Korea, I demonstrate how his literary experiments work, briefly suggesting their implications and prospects.

A four-page article about palindromic poetry that traces a feminine genealogy, considering Su Hui's multi-directional, fourth-century, Star Gauge; Sinologist and Oulipo member Michèle Métail's study, Wild Geese Returning: Chinese Reversible Forms; Erika Greber's "Chronotope of Revolution"; and Jen Bervin's contemporary poetry and embroidery project, Silk Poems; closing with an original palindromic poem by me.

Abstract

Italo Calvino (1923-1985) is well known to architects as well as architecture students with his book La Citta Invisibili [Invisible Cities, 1972] which is in fact part of a trilogy, together with If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler (1979) and The Castle of Crossed Destinies [1973]. For more than forty years Invisible Cities has been a core text for imagination worldwide: It has been, and still is, one of the extensively consumed fictions in architecture schools as a course material, not to mention in studios. The present writer, as a fan of Calvino, made a detour to his oeuvre after 25 years –this time not as a student but as a professor at the school of architecture. In Studio for Potential Architecture (POMI), which is an architectural design course that I have been conducting since 2002, I decided to go deeper, and avoid shallow interpretations – which are not uncommon for this book. As architects conventionally define themselves as draughtsmen rather than readers, there exist not a single attempt to reinterpret this text in an archi-fictional way, by taking the cities into account in their entirety, not as singular objects to be visualized or remodeled. In How I Wrote One of My Books [1983], one of his lesser known masterpieces devoted to Oulipo (the French surrealist literature group of the 60s), Calvino “explained” how he wrote his Traveler [1979]. In this minor masterpiece, Calvino maps out his novel by using A. J. Greimas’ semiological/grammatological model, known as the semiological square. To the reader’s surprise, this model is not only appropriate for the Traveler, but also for the two other volumes of the trilogy.

This paper deals with the process of unravelling of Invisible Cities – word by word, image by image, in my studio. This resulted in the production of more than a thousand unique word/image cards of the book that would lead to a “Calvino Chess”. The aim was to create an architecture-game - a game that could create the ambiguity of the book endlessly, each time it was played. The outcome of the studio is a box game with a set of rules that give shape to each city and section in the book without repetition. This paper tells the story of the complicated and joyful design process through this terra incognita, explicates the steps of the creation of the game in detail, and calls for a more creative reading of playful literature like Calvino’s.

The trilogy Our Ancestors by the famous novelist, story writer, master of fiction, and Oulipo member Italo Calvino (1923-1985) is very well-known. However, he wrote another trilogy as famous as the former, and much more of interest to architecture, with regards to its structure. This trilogy consists of Invisible Cities [1972], The Castle of Crossed Destinies [1973], and If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler [1979], in chronological order. This trilogy is one of the most significant literary works of twentieth century in terms of its structure; and for many years it has been in the scope of POMİ (Studio for Potential Architecture), the studio course I have been conducting in the faculty of architecture. This is why I am writing this paper.

Before explaining what POMI is, and how my students and I deal with Calvino’s Invisible Cities, I would like to frame the context I consider Invisible Cities belongs to. I have to accept in advance that the context I will attempt to define will be far from being complete and definitive. There exist many similar cases; and as all have been doing since Jenkins claimed it, I have to accept that each and every contextualization is a distorted historicization. All I can do is to present an incomplete picture. I also accept that each historicization involves a personal variant, depends on recognized cases, and probably reburies the texts which were never allowed to reveal. Thus, I desperately warn the reader to be aware of such risks.

After these follow the section in which I examine the search for a model, and the preliminary findings in that process. Then comes another process where the research tends towards a detailed phase that lacks any models.

In the world of art, instructions coming out of conceptual art and avant
garde music is not at all new. Think only of Sol Lewitt, Yoko Ono, Le Monte
Young, Boulez onto Sophie Calle, Vito Acconci, Oulipo, each working with
prescribed sets of constraints. These artists worked with algorithms and
instructions prior to our world of software and computation which of course amplifies and takes further instructions.

We live within instructions, coming to us all the time over networks and
their codes, within the software protocols that overlay our environment,
let alone all the legal and civil codes, restraints and processes which order
the everyday. Such things tend to go into the background until of course
something goes wrong, like planes disappearing in the skies, or cops
killing too many people or diseases crossing borders, or when networks are
compromised and we learn we’ve been listening in on the phone calls of the
German Prime Minister.

Over time my interest become instructions and the various apparatuses that put them forward. Setting up an envelope of possibilities. instructions put forward procedures to explore a possibility space, instances, protocols and procedures, are in themselves technical instruments that exponentially scale up in a networked and computational culture.
