Open Source and Free Software Studies

Software development paradigms help a software developer to select appropriate strategies to develop software projects. They include various methods, procedures, and tools to describe and define the software development life cycle (SDLC). The waterfall and iterative models are two useful development paradigms, which have been used by various software developers in the last decades. This paper proposes a new software development methodology, called waterative model, which applies an integration of the waterfall and iterative development paradigms. In this model, the iterative model is embedded into the waterfall model to use the advantages of both models as an integrated one. It, in the most cases, is appropriate for large software products that need a long-term period of time for the development process. Experimental results demonstrate that the customer satisfaction score could be high by using the proposed model in various software projects.

The increased institutional demand for all faculty to publish scholarly work, even for faculty in non-research institutions, has created a near perfect two-sided market effect for commercial entities to profit from the labor of already overburdened academics while offering little-to-no compensation to these individuals or their institutions. As significant, institutional-level pushback against the cost of access to scholarly materials has begun to coalesce, it seems prudent if not pressing to revisit once more the longstanding debates over labor, cost, and access in scholarly publishing and to argue for more ethical, equitable, and democratizing models. To that end, this essay 1) argues for the notion that all for-profit commercial academic publishing and distribution is predatory and perpetuates an unethical labor model in which commercial entities profit from free labor in the academy and 2) asks how the open source movement offers a model for more ethical, non-profit publishing practices. It concludes that making newly published work freely available in open repositories, whether run by individual or groups of colleges or universities, should function as only a first step towards rethinking the forms of journal article and book and the means by which they are produced.

Esse artigo aborda, de uma forma breve, como a noção de compartilhamento e criação coletiva presente no modelo de produção do software livre está vinculada a uma ideia de direito e responsabilidade social. Demonstramos como através dacriação  do  Projeto  GNU,  que  deu  início  ao  movimento  software  livre,  Richard Stallman, procurou se opor a uma lógica anti-comunitária e anti-solidária imposta pela indústria de software a partir do final do século passado. Essa lógica ao transformar  o  software  em  um  bem  privado,  de  uso  e  circulação  restritos pelo copyright, privilegiou a ação, a criação e o ganho individual em detrimentodo coletivo. Na contramão dessa tendência, o movimento software livre apresenta uma defesa não somente do conhecimento livre como um valor importante na sociedade, mas também da sua produção de forma colaborativa como essencial para que ele, e a sociedade como um todo, prospere.

Relato da experiência de extensão desenvolvida no Projeto Fotolivre.ufsc, site elaborado com softwares livres e utilizando a licença Creative Commons. O objetivo principal do projeto foi divulgar a produção discente das disciplinas de Fotografia do Curso de Jornalismo da UFSC, na forma de banco de imagens. A metodologia desenvolvida primeiramente com a pesquisa bibliográfica sobre banco de imagens e ferramentas livres para a criação de produtos fotojornalísticos on-line e sua utilização. Em seguida, foi criado o site Fotolivre.ufsc, feito com aplicativos livres, como o Joomla, com a estruturação de um banco de imagens da produção fotográfica dos alunos. O site Fotolivre.ufsc foi lançado durante a 8ª Sepex – Semana de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão da UFSC, em outubro de 2009. Realizado no período de maio a dezembro, o projeto constituiu-se em uma iniciativa de interesse para a comunidade em geral, estimulando a produção fotojornalística acadêmica e o uso de softwares livres.

The use of computer applications has irrevocably changed the way archaeology is done, as well as redefined what it means to do “good” archaeology. This has brought about numerous methodological questions concerning the use of data, data sources, and the software used in analyses. This thesis seeks to explore some of these issues, including the re-use or borrowing of data, open source data, and the use of FOSS programs within archaeology.
In order to answer these questions, the spatial relationship between the terraces in the Swiss Alps was investigated. The study area is located in the area surrounding (and including) Ramosch in the Lower Engadine, Switzerland. These terraces have been in use since at least the Middle Ages, and could potentially date to the Bronze Age. The terraces were documented based on remote sensing data and digitized in QGIS 1.8. The spatial relationship of the terraces is primarily determined by the viability of the land for agriculture (soil composition and sunlight), followed by the distance from modern settlements, modern features in the landscape (i.e. buildings, roads, and waterways), and access to water.
This research shows that it is possible to do archaeological research by recycling data from third-party sources. All of the data used in this project was obtained for no cost. The spatial resolution of the general purpose data and recycled data was more than adequate and the lack of metadata was not a major obstacle. The largest hindrance with using data collected by others for an alternative purpose is finding the right data and gaining access to this data. The processes of understanding the data without metadata can be completed by comparing the unknown datasets to those that are known.
The use of FOSS programs is extremely beneficial. The low cost, easy accessibility and large online communities have helped the FOSS movement to thrive. The ability to share information unhindered by licensing and terms and conditions promotes the continuation of accessible research. However, FOSS is not inherently better than proprietary software. The primary requirement for the use of a program should be its ability to perform all the required functions necessary for good research.

Esta investigación estará enfocada a el impacto que ha tenido este movimiento
socio-tecnológico en los desarrolladores de Open Source en Jalisco; así como
también se tendrá una panorámica de lo que es el movimiento, sus intenciones y la
importancia de ser parte de él.
Se busca beneficiar a los desarrolladores de Open Source en Jalisco informando a
la población actual, así como a ellos mismos de lo que representa desarrollar en
Open Source y todas las ventajas que tiene hacerlo, además de fomentar a la
sociedad a que sea más abierta a estas ideas

La presente investigación nos acerca a la producción de software desde una perspectiva sociológica, buscando comprender el modo como este se erige en un elemento determinante del mundo contemporáneo. Nos referimos al software como el componente intangible de la informática, un conjunto de aplicaciones y sistemas elaborados a partir de instrucciones escritas en diferentes lenguajes de programación, que posibilitan el funcionamiento y la utilización de todo tipo de dispositivos. El que constituye una de las grandes áreas que componen las Tecnologías de la Información y las Comunicaciones (TIC), junto al hardware, la industria electrónica y las telecomunicaciones.

Los estudios acerca de la brecha digital de género dan cuenta de un origen reciente en relación a otras áreas de interés de las investigaciones feministas. Las primeras indagaciones se orientaron a describir y analizar la participación de las mujeres como sujetos de la “sociedad de la información”, por un lado, visibilizando las aportaciones que realizaron a lo largo de la historia y demostrando que no son tan pocas, y por otro lado, identificando los obstáculos que impidieron –y siguen impidiendo– una auténtica inclusión de las mujeres en este ámbito. Estas líneas de investigación iniciales se fueron complejizando con el avance mismo de las tecnologías.
A fin de profundizar la brecha de género como una de las problemáticas más enraizada en el software libre,  en esta oportunidad propongo recuperar  investigaciones recientes que indagan la participación en dos ámbitos específicos, con el propósito de distinguir los presupuestos que se entraman en la asunción de una identidad generizada para desenvolverse en un espacio de trabajo virtual, ya sea respecto a la subjetividad propia como a la de lxs demás

Women are underrepresented in the digital media arts – particularly with regard to coding as an arts practice. The culture and language of digital creation is currently dominated by men and is perpetuated by a capitalist, patriarchal economic model that binds educational art establishments into expensive hardware and software licensing contracts which perpetuate the problem.

The current climate crisis is provoking humanity to re-evaluate industrial manufacture and consumerism brought about by the technological program and economies of scale. We are seeing a possible future where open source software, peer to peer communications models may enable more marginalised groups, particularly women and more specifically artists working with digital tools and net-art to be involved in this important sociopolitical work.

Through conversation with female artists and other women involved in this work, I’m asking them about their relationship with code, and about their relationships to other people who create code for them and with them, and about the impact that this delegation has on the direction of their practice. With a particular focus on the UK, the study looks forward at current efforts that are being made by governmental and non-governmental groups to create a wider diversity within digital arts and technology.
