Abstract
I beni della nobiltà nel Friuli moderno: un quadro d’insieme e alcuni casi di rivendicazioni maschili e femminili a cavallo del confine
La realtà geopolitica presa in esame è quella del Friuli moderno, spartito, dopo la caduta del dominio temporale dei Patriarchi di Aquileia nel 1420, tra i territori soggetti alla Repubblica veneta (la cosiddetta Patria del Friuli) e le terre della Contea di Gorizia, direttamente parte dei domini asburgici dal 1500.
La presenza di un confine che divideva sistemi costituzionali -  Repubblica e Impero - e politici diversi – si pensi all’importanza del confine nazionale che dall’Ottocento divide Italia e Austria – ha favorito in molta parte della storiografia e fino ad anni recenti, un’interpretazione spesso oppositiva della nobiltà in età moderna. Di quest’ultima sono state sottolineate soprattutto le divisioni, l’organizzazione in fazioni, la perdurante conflittualità legata alle diverse inclinazioni politiche e ideali per l’una o l’altra realtà statuale.
In questo saggio ci si propone di abbandonare questa prospettiva meramente “politica” e di comprendere meglio le relazioni che legavano o opponevano le famiglie nelle pratiche sociali e giuridiche relative ai patrimoni e derivanti dal matrimonio o dalla successione. A questo scopo si è portata l’attenzione sui beni personali e familiari, sui diritti di proprietà, sulla trasmissione, sulle rivendicazioni che interessano diversi tipi di beni. L’obiettivo è quello di analizzare, grazie ad alcuni casi specifici, quali fossero i comportamenti e le scelte che in queste occasioni uomini e donne dell’aristocrazia adottavano.
Nella prima parte del saggio si fa cenno al quadro giuridico e istituzionale, mettendo in luce gli elementi che accomunano le due aree territoriali e che hanno una comune radice nel precedente periodo patriarcale. Le Costituzioni patriarcali costituiscono infatti riferimento per le raccolte giuridiche provinciali - sia della Patria del Friuli che del Friuli asburgico - elaborate o modificate nel corso dell’età moderna. In questo senso, le leggi che regolamentano il godimento dei beni, i diritti successori, la dote fanno riferimento ad un quadro normativo sostanzialmente condiviso ma in cui i caratteri della tradizione giuridica germanica e di quella romana si vengono affiancando. Diversi i sistemi amministrativi e gli apparati di giustizia dai due lati del confine e diversi i canali di difesa degli interessi della nobiltà e le possibilità di contrattazione con il potere centrale, sebbene si rintracci in entrambe le aree divise dal confine una matrice comune segnata dal particolarismo e da una perdurante impronta feudale: città “capoluogo”, comunità, assemblee di rappresentanza territoriale e cetuale, feudi e giurisdizioni di diverso peso.
Manca tuttavia una lettura complessiva e comparativa che descriva insieme Friuli veneto ed asburgico da questi punti di vista e soprattutto manca un’analisi approfondita delle pratiche oltre che delle norme che tenga conto del diverso agire di uomini e donne nelle rivendicazioni e nei conflitti che si aprono per la difesa dei rispettivi diritti. Con l’obiettivo di tessere una storia sociale del confine e delle sue élites che leghi storia della famiglia e prospettiva di genere, il saggio propone tre spunti di riflessione a partire da alcuni casi di studio che hanno come oggetto beni di diversa entità e importanza.
Nel primo si mettono in relazione le rivendicazioni economiche e patrimoniali di alcune famiglie della più importante aristocrazia locale con le strategie politiche dei casati medesimi mostrando, attraverso esempi tratti sia dalla documentazione istituzionale che dalle carte di famiglia, come gli interessi e gli accordi privati di alcuni membri non possano essere correttamente interpretati se non si tiene conto, più ampiamente, del quadro politico generale e della conflittualità nobiliare che interessa il Cinquecento friulano e che oppone o stringe i casati di appartenenza di questi soggetti.
Il secondo livello di analisi riguarda alcuni casi di trasmissione di beni tra famiglie a cavallo del confine: beni il cui godimento (o la cui rivendicazione) è legata a matrimoni contratti tra soggetti di famiglie venete e asburgiche. Le situazioni di conflitto fanno emergere le difficoltà della gestione giudiziaria transfrontaliera che può protrarsi per più generazioni, le differenze di genere nella conduzione delle cause ma anche spesso il ricorso a pratiche extragiudiziarie che si richiamano ad un universo di valori ideali e che la nobiltà condivide.
Un ultimo livello di analisi fa cenno – con il ricorso ad alcuni esempi tratti sempre dalla documentazione privato-familiare -  alla diversa entità dei beni rivendicati: piccoli oggetti personali o, all’estremo opposto della scala, beni feudali. Si analizza in particolare la posizione delle donne relativamente alla scelta di trasmettere i primi o di vantare diritti di titolarità dei secondi.

TRANSFORMATION DES MILITARADELS DER DONAUMONARCHIE WAHREND DES ERSTEN WELTKRIEGS

Die Studie hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die Wandlung des osterreich-ungarischen Militaradels (noblesse d'epee) im Laufe der Zeit, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf den Ersten Weltkrieg und die Ursachen fur die Veranderungen der Nobilitierungsvorschriften in der Ara des Ersten Weltkriegs, festzuhalten. Die systematisierte Adelung von Offizieren war mehr als 160 Jahre lang eines der traditionellen Symbole der Adelspolitik der Habsburger Monarchie. Ihre Einfuhrung im Jahre 1757 war Bestandteil der aufklarerischen Reformpolitik von Maria Theresia, die die Starkung der Krone in der Armee und die Gewahrleistung einer ausreichenden
Anzahl an qualifizierten und fahigen Offizieren anstrebte. Diese Personen stammten nun nicht mehr nur aus dem Adel, sie waren zumeist burgerlicher oder sogar landlicher Herkunft, und deshalb erhohte dieser Schritt grundsatzlich deren Prestige in der standisch hierarchisierten Gesellschaft.
Nach 1848 und der Verkundung der Gleichheit vor dem Gesetz verwandelte sich die Nobilitierung in eine spezifische Form der staatlichen Auszeichnung, die durch ihre Erblichkeit ausergewohnlich und einzigartig war. Der Anspruch der Offiziere auf den Adelstitel blieb trotz aller gesellschaftlichen und politischen Umschwunge erhalten, und dies vor allem deshalb, weil ein groser Teil des Offizierskorps dieses Privilegium als eines der Symbole seines Standes betrachtete. Zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges zeigte sich jedoch, dass diese altehrwurdige Tradition einer grundsatzlichen Reform bedarf. Obwohl man ursprunglich an eine Restriktion der Privilegien gedacht hatte, trug die Entwicklung der militarischen Situation und der gesteigerte Bedarf an Personen mit Offiziersberuf dazu bei, dass die Plane zur Einschrankung der systematisierten Adelung von Offizieren einstweilen nur auf dem Papier existierten. Jedoch deutet eine ganze Reihe von Indizien daraufhin, dass zugleich ganz klar eine Richtung eingeschlagen wurde, die bei einer anderen historischen Fugung spater zu einer grundsatzlichen Einschrankung dieses Privilegs gefuhrt hatte. Anstatt dessen zerbrach 1918 die 100-jahrige Monarchie, und an ihrer Stelle entstanden Staaten und Regimes, die die Frage der Adelung radikal und ein fur alle Mal erledigten, und zwar durch Aufhebung.

U Državnom arhivu u Vukovaru, u sklopu Međunarodnog dana arhiva, predstavljeni su najnoviji znanstveni i stručni radovi posvećeni likovnoj, rukopisnoj i ostaloj kulturnoj baštini obitelji Eltz. Spomenuti su radovi vrijedan doprinos istraživanju društveno-političke, gospodarske i kulturne uloge  plemstva u 19. i prvoj polovici 20. stoljeća.

Portuguese colonists carried their conceptions of social organization to the Americas.
Their ideal was to “live like a gentleman,” that is, to own land and command laborers in
order to distance themselves from manual labor and exercise patriarchal authority over a
large household. Their property also allowed them the time and resources to be active in
local politics and serve the Crown. They intended to reproduce in the New World the
lifestyle of the Portuguese provincial nobility. There were, however, huge differences,
since in Brazil the elite lorded over enslaved persons instead of peasants. The first elite
families made their fortunes through the conquest and enslavement of Native Americans
in the second half of the 16th century, but many of them did not manage to maintain their
position during the transition to enslaved African labor in the following decades. Especially
in the most dynamic areas, such as Pernambuco and Bahia, the first half of the 17th
century was a period of flux in elite composition. By mid-century, however, a small number
of families controlled most local offices, slowly fashioning themselves into local nobilities
and wielding these claims to negotiate with the Crown and its representatives.
Planter elites also established broad patron-client networks that included even their enslaved
property. Nevertheless, their preeminence was threatened by the rise of merchant
power in the 18th century, boosted by the huge demographic and economic expansion derived
from gold discoveries in the southeast and the development of the internal market.
Nevertheless, the noble ideal did not lose its appeal, and many rich merchants linked
themselves to old noble families through marriage and the adoption of an aristocratic
lifestyle.

Sports played a main role as a catalyzer of the social change between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Historiography has mainly emphasized its connection with the unstoppable arrival of the masses. However, exclusivity, luxury and social distinction were very much embodied in some sports and reinvigorated by them. Moreover, how did elites cope with the irruption of sports as a form of sociability and social mobility? Polo provides one of the answers to this question. The definition -and exclusion- of the elites through a sport is the main topic of this article, and how social inequality boundaries sometimes depend on a subtle mixture of cultural, economic and symbolic power. The analysis is posed in an extremely complex historical period, when Spain had many similitudes with European and American societies experimenting tremendous transformations.
Firstly, the article traces the development of polo in the country, its connection with the Monarch and some central characters. We then analyze the controversy that emerged within the elites because of the new -and for some negative- implications of these activities. Finally, we developed the connections between the elites and polo in the tumultuous 30s and 40s.

The medieval hunt and hunting manuals have been studied by historians
as sources for the history of medieval science and geography, and for their
insights into the daily lives of the elite societies that practiced hunting as
a ritualized sport. This article examines two medieval hunting manuals,
Juan Manuel’s Libro de la caza, and the Libro de la montería, commissioned by King Alfonso XI of Castile, and King Alfonso X’s law code, the Siete partidas, for their rhetorical and ideological portrayals of hunting and falconry as expressions of aristocratic power and sovereignty over the natural world. The article concludes with a study of an imagined debate between the merits of falconry and hunting with hounds in the Libro de la caza and Libro de la montería that sheds light on Juan Manuel and Alfonso’s competing views on nobility, informed by the political history of war and rebellion that shaped the lives of both men.

In 1438 Pedro, Duke of Coimbra, was second-in-line to the Portuguese
throne. The death of his elder brother Duarte had left the royal seat vacant and Pedro, a middle-aged, powerful magnate was elected as regent for Duarte’s son Afonso, the boy of six to whom the crown fell. First as the co-regent and then single-handedly, Pedro governed over Portugal and its elites during a decade marked in turn by contentment and upheaval, as much as by courtly struggles between aristocratic factions. In 1449, amidst accusations of lese-majesty and of favouring his own, Pedro would meet a bitter end in the field of battle, at the hands of his young nephew, King Afonso V, seemingly manipulated by an influential clique of enemies to the regent. This paper will examine Pedro of Coimbra and some of the men surrounding him during his political career (c. 1416 to 1449), in particular those employed as «diplomats» in foreign service. It will trace three different stages in Pedro’s trajectory — as a prince in the making, as the king’s counsellor, and finally as regent of the Portuguese kingdom — in order to question the extent to which a leading magnate of the fifteenth century was able to project his political influence in tandem with, or in reaction to, royal power. Ultimately, the paper highlights the co-existence, and indeed the overlap, between royal
and non-royal diplomatic ambitions and the strains and challenges that it
caused in the politics and diplomacy of Portugal in this period.

A The radical amendments to its statutes in notwithstanding, the Teutonic Order Bailiwick of Utrecht is still defined by its Protestant outlook and its roots in ancient nobility, an identity that dates back nearly four centuries. Between and , despite having remained Catholic over a remarkably long period, it had broken with the central order in Germany, becoming an institution for Reformed, married noblemen. The admission requirements were four noble quarters and membership of the Reformed church. In this way, the order fitted seamlessly within the structures of the Dutch Republic. In the revolutionary period after , the order sought to survive by keeping a low profile. In Napoleon dissolved the Bailiwick. After the restoration of Dutch independence, this measure was reversed by King William I. In the new kingdom, adherence to the old admission criteria demarcated the old nobility not only from the new aristocracy, but also from the old Catholic nobility in the South. After the rupture of the kingdom in and the introduction of the liberal constitution in-which introduced a parliamentary system, abolished the rights of the aristocracy and brought equality of religions-the Protestant nobility assumed a leading role in the defence of traditional values. Into this picture fits the reinforced Protestant identity of the Bailiwick of Utrecht. In the twentieth century, this identity expressed itself through the increasing importance of its donations policy.
