Minoan art and archaeology

Σκοπός αυτής της εργασίας είναι αφενός η αναφορά στα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά των ιερών κορυφής και αφετέρου η διερεύνηση της ύπαρξης ή όχι κοινών τοπογραφικών στοιχείων που θα μπορούσαν να εξηγήσουν την επιλογή των συγκεκριμένων θέσεων για λατρευτικούς σκοπούς.

The Griffin Warrior Ring No. 2 is a gold Minoan-style engraved signet ring from Pylos dating to the Late Helladic IIA (1580–1490 BCE). The ring’s bezel depicts a seascape with a columnar tree shrine flanked by palm trees situated on a rocky outcrop. Five elaborately dressed female figures stand on either side of the shrine. The tree shrine features a net pattern in the space between its stone or brick piers. It is proposed that this represents a fishing net and that the structure is a sea altar dedicated to an unnamed Minoan tree goddess akin to the Levantine Asherah. The ring’s hoop is decorated with cockle shells, further emphasising its marine theme. It will be argued that the iconography alludes to marine food resources, practical and luxury textile fibres, sea trade, transculturality and cult, and is testament to the importance of the sea in the Aegean Bronze Age.

From a cursory appraisal it is a simple step to assume that Minoan women's costume included a corset of varying degrees of tightness. This essay aims to show, however, that such an interpretation is based on a misunderstanding of the garment combined with the reliance on forgeries, rather than on genuine examples of Minoan clothing.

- Knossos in Paris. Minoan and Mycenaean references in "The Remembrance of Things Past". This article identifies the references to primitive Greece of Proust who, without being very knowledgeable in archeology, shared the Cretomania of his time, wich was marked by the latest discoveries from the Knossos excavations in 1900. In "À la recherche du temps perdu" are thus to be found again the era’s aesthetic and archeological debates.
- Cnosso a Parigi: archeologia minoica e micenea attraverso "Alla ricerca del tempo perduto". Questo articolo identifica i riferimenti alla Grecia primitiva di Proust che, sebbene non molto studioso in archeologia, condivideva la cretomania del suo tempo segnata dalle ultime scoperte degli scavi di Cnosso nel 1900. "À La Recherche du temps perdu" riflette i dibattiti estetici e archeologici del tempo.
RESUME / ABSTRACT
Au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, l'Europe s'emballa pour un nouveau visage de la Grèce révélé par les fouilles de l'archéologue anglais Arthur Evans à Cnossos, qui mirent au jour le prétendu palais du roi Minos dont l'architecture et les fresques rencontraient les attentes de l'Art nouveau. La Grèce de Marcel Proust est tributaire de cette révélation de la Grèce préhellénique qui avait aussi frappé le couturier vénitien Mariano Fortuny, dont Madeleine Lemaire présenta les « châles Cnossos » à Paris dès 1908. En Russie le peintre Léon Bakst, décorateur des Ballets Russes admirés par Proust, se passionnait lui aussi pour ces formes et ces couleurs qui renouvelaient l'esthétique du théâtre et de la mode. Quant à Sarah Bernhardt, modèle de la Berma dans La Recherche, elle n'avait pas attendu Evans : les découvertes de Schliemann à Mycènes l'avaient déjà inspirée pour le décor et les costumes de Phèdre. Ce faisceau de références est tout sauf accessoire : il permet de reconstituer, à travers la « crétomanie » 1900, l'importance de la Grèce préhellénique et de la Grèce archaïque dont La Recherche diffracte l'image dans les passages les plus inattendus : tel geste, telle posture des jeunes filles, telle attitude de la Berma, jusqu'à certaine description de Versailles, sont incompréhensibles si l'on ne fait appel à ces trouvailles archéologiques et aux reconstitutions de l'époque – loin d'amoindrir ou de réduire le sens, ces références permettent de le retrouver.

C'è una specie di rumore di fondo, che disturba continuamente la lettura di chi vuole addentrarsi seriamente nello studio e nell'analisi del disco di Phaistós (cfr. Stefani, M. 2015: 273-294). Tralasciamo pure le innumerevoli presunte "decifrazioni" della scritta geroglifica ivi impressa, sorvoliamo sulle fantasie al riguardo e sulla sicumera di qualche accademico, detentore di inoppugnabili (?) verità scientifiche, ma permettetemi di fare almeno il punto sull'origine e sull'autenticità del disco di Phaistós. Per farlo cercherò di soffermarmi su alcuni aspetti, in base a quanto accertato da diversi studiosi. So bene che per la stragrande maggioranza degli archeologi può sembrare superfluo puntualizzare un argomento del genere, ma vale forse la pena ritornare sui ricorrenti accenni all'articolo di Jerome M. Eisenberg sul presunto falso del secolo scorso (The Phaistos Disk: one hundred year old hoax? Minerva vol. 19 n. 4 July/August 2008: 9-24). La teoria è stata poi pomposamente presentata al Congresso degli Antiquari londinesi come "International Phaistos Disk Conference" (31 October-1 November 2008). Vedremo che quanto supposto da Eisenberg non è soltanto infondato, ma palesemente illogico, falsificato dall'intrinseca contraddizione con le scoperte archeologiche effettuate negli anni successivi alla scoperta del Pernier: ascia di Arkalochóri (con incisi due segni del disco), anello d'oro di Mavro Spelio (scritta spiraliforme), pietra per libagioni di Malia (due segni del disco), vaso di Knosso con impresso il segno 12 del disco, impronta su cretula da Phaistós con impresso il grafema 21 del disco. La pseudo analisi illustrata al congresso degli antiquari della perfida Albione (2008), oltre a richiamare vecchie e sorpassate teorie dell'Evans sui popoli del mare e sulle tombe licie, nonché attingere alla bibliografia di alcuni autori a dir poco discutibili, raggiunge il colmo della fanta-psicologia credendo di calare l'asso del piombo di Magliano (noto per la sua scritta spiraliforme, in caratteri etruschi). Secondo Eisenberg, il Pernier si sarebbe ispirato al reperto etrusco per creare il disco di Phaistós, mosso da invidia e gelosia delle scoperte fatte dal suo maestro Halbherr e dall'inglese Evans. Diavolo di un Pernier, da tipico italiano avrebbe giocato sporco? Fortuna vuole che egli non fosse messicano, altrimenti Eisenberg lo avrebbe accusato di essersi ispirato nientemeno che al calendario solare azteco (composto da circoli di glifi).

Recent studies of Prepalatial and Protopalatial pottery from Phaistos have shown that the multi-layered composition of most locally made vases was the outcome of a peculiar way of joining together subsequent slabs of clay by overlapping them and securing the junctures through the application of extra layers (layering technique). This technique, which can be seen as halfway between moulding and slab-building, required that each new section was applied over the previously shaped one when this was dry enough to withstand the pressure exercised by the potter without being deformed, and thus ultimately involved specific technical expedients (such as scoring, keying and the use of liquid clay) to improve the adherence between elements that had different degrees of plasticity. This paper aims to expand further on this forming technique and, by building upon the features of two peculiar multi-layered vases in Kamares ware, it will argue that the ceramic rings found in the production area at Phaistos and originally interpreted as kiln-supports were in fact used as internal supports to shape fine-textured rims and bases of coarse-bodied vases in Kamares ware.
