How do videos, movies and documentaries dedicated to indigenous communities transform the media landscape of South Asia? Based on extensive original research, this book examines how in South Asia popular music videos, activist political clips, movies and documentaries about, by and for indigenous communities take on radically new significances. Media, Indigeneity and Nation in South Asia shows how in the portrayal of indigenous groups by both ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ imaginations of indigeneity and nation become increasingly interlinked. Indigenous groups, typically marginal to the nation, are at the same time part of mainstream polities and cultures. Drawing on perspectives from media studies and visual anthropology, this book compares and contrasts the situation in South Asia with indigeneity globally.

After soundwalks, there is always talk about traffic. Other topics come and go, but this one seems ubiquitous, like the sound in our daily lives. The quality of attention invoked in soundwalks encourages heightened listening to and reflection on the vibrations and flows of road traffic, the most constant sounds of many places. This paper explores soundwalking from an emplaced sensorial methodology by asking the following questions: How do resonant bodies sense vibrations of traffic and make sense of them? What kinds of prostheses and practices are used to do this, and how do these technological processes affect daily sonic experiences of traffic, urban design that pays attention to sound, and the creation and reception of sonic artworks involving traffic?

  In the mid 1960’s, in the midst of a climate of technological excitement, the impact of mass media and mass culture was processed artistically in a number of ways: not just as a reference to or quote (apologetic or critical) of the imaginaria of television, film and advertising, the icons of mass culture, but also as a medium, a technique and as a materiality.
During the early stages of the still unnamed conceptualism some Argentine avantgarde artists began to experiment with mass media and information technology. In this sense, they hearkened back to some of the experiences carried out at the Di Tella Institute, especially the happenings and environments of Marta Minujín. There were other artists, other works. Recently a nucleus of artists and theorists garnered growing attention for the creation in 1966 of a “new genre” they called “Arte de los Medios de comunicación de masas” (Mass Communication Media Art).
Although this was a confined effort, crystallized in only a few works and a smattering of texts and manifestos, it implied sharp reflection on the part of its twenty-something promoters (Roberto Jacoby, Eduardo Costa and Raúl Escari and the also young intellectuals involved in the process, Eliseo Verón and especially Oscar Masotta). The latter was an advanced figure in the cultural world for the breadth of his activity (literary criticism in the 1950’s, experimental artistic practice and theory and the diffusion of the comic strip in the 1960’s and the introduction of Lacanian psychoanalysis in Spanish in the 1970’s). Sporadically associated with the School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires, Masotta was involved with Contorno (1953-59), remembered as an early milestone of a new kind of literary criticism and intellectual activity. Its members, influenced by Sartrian existentialism mixed with a markedly Hegelian Marxism, stood apart from the “official” left as well as from the ”traditional liberals who still held a hegemony over the cultural domain”.
During the decade we are dealing with, Masotta introduced and was the main propagator of new ideas (derived from structuralism, semiology and other paradigms of contemporary thought) in the arts, and he did not fail to point out the historical correlation between the growth of mass information media and contemporary art.
The emphasis on information circuits and theories of the sign was one of the approaches adopted by the “conceptualist turn” and the Utopia of an enlarged life based on expanding the boundaries of artistic experience. In their most radical propositions, these artists did not extrapolate media technology devices to convert them into
aesthetic objects. They went beyond that. They actually created their works inside circuits of mass communication. It was there that they saw art being reconnected with culture of the masses, its unprecedented expansion towards a mass audience receptor, the possibility of
inciting a critical consciousness in the viewer and even a potential political tool.

A través de esta investigación propongo el desarrollo de nociones en relación para la creación, el estudio y la experiencia de la videodanza desde un enfoque intermedial, las cuales se entretejen conformando, como me gustaría mostrar, una constelación de relaciones epistémicas. Los términos coreo-cinema y videodanza, nombran a un campo que implica la contaminación y el enriquecimiento mutuos de recursos y elementos de danza- coreografía y cine-video, como tránsito entre estos medios, transformándolos en sus intersecciones y proponiendo nuevas nociones en potencia y devenir.

Considero que la propuesta de interrelación de nociones, en esta investigación, se puede pensar y ocupar a manera de entramado conceptual y teórico-práctico para videodanza y probablemente para otros casos de intermedialidad. Propongo nociones en lugar de conceptos o definiciones, y un entramado a diferencia de un conjunto cerrado de elementos compositivos o formales para videodanza. La noción indica pues un cambio de enfoque, una propuesta metodológica que asume movimientos constantes, inestabilidades e imposibilidad de fijaciones para el campo intermedial e interdisciplinar del coreo-cinema.

Why do some militant groups use rhetoric that indicates intentions of
democratic governance, while others are silent on these issues, or
even clearly oppose them? In this article, I explore militant groups’
desire for external legitimacy, and seek to explain when they are
willing to make costly promises to follow liberal norms. I argue that
human rights media attention has a significant effect on group
behavior. Specifically, militant groups are more likely to use democratic
rhetoric when they are “in the spotlight,” which results in a
higher likelihood of external legitimacy in exchange for following
costly liberal norms. Using the Minorities at Risk Organizational
Behavior (MAROB) data for the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and
Russia, as well as a historical analysis of three militant groups in
Indonesia, I find that militant groups residing in areas that receive a
large amount of media attention are more likely to support democratic
practices.

ABSTRACT As soon as digital artifacts have become a part and parcel of everyday life, the need for digital media archives with the capacity of preserving the given metadata has risen impressively. The process of converting the digital metadata to archives, however, is fraught with a number of difficulties, the key one concerning the methodology for embedding high payload capacity information into the digital multimedia and at the same time retains high quality of the image. The given paper will consider steganography as a possible solution to the aforementioned issue. Allowing for detecting the genetic algorithm for boosting the PSNR value with the information of high capacity will help solve the issue regarding the digital multimedia archiving. Many sizes of data are embeded inside the images and the PSNR (Peak signal-to-noise ratio) is also taken for each of the images verified.

In the case of AGI, there is an odd persistence of discourse that seems far in excess of what science allows, and those most captivated by that excess are often the same people captivated by excesses about race. Part of this is visible through the unusual amount of overlap between AGI promoters and those who believe in a strong correlation between what they call “race” and what they call “IQ.”

In the media industry, fast innovations and increasing competition require a high degree of corporate leadership (Koryak, Mole, Lockett, et al., 2015). The study of leadership appears to be an increasingly relevant issue. This research aims to find out to what extent leaders (editors and publishers) behave and understand their roles in Chilean and Spanish newsrooms. A questionnaire was applied to measure and identify leadership traits that are considered crucial, thus making possible to acknowledge transformational leaders and differentiate efficient leaders from ineffective. The results show that editors believe they have the ability to inspire, share goals and understand what is important, in contrast with the working experiences of their employees, that often have a low opinion of media companies as places to work.

ABSTRACT New and emerging use cases, such as the interconnection of geographically remote data centers, are drawing attention to the need for provisioning end-to-end connectivity services spanning multiple and heterogeneous network domains. This heterogeneity is due not only to the data transmission and switching technology (the so-called data plane) but also to the deployed control plane, which may be used within each domain to automate the setup and recovery of such services, dynamically. The choice of a control plane is affected by factors such as availability, maturity, operator’s preference, and the ability to satisfy a list of functional requirements. Given the current developments around OpenFlow and software-defined networking (SDN) along with the need to account for existing deployments based on GMPLS, the problem of heterogeneous control plane interworking needs to be solved. The retained solution must equally address the specific issues of multidomain networks, such as limited domain topology visibility, given the scalability and confidentiality constraints that characterize them. In this setting, we propose a functional and protocol architecture for such interworking, based on the key concepts of network abstraction and overarching control, implemented in terms of a hierarchical stateful path computation element (PCE), which provides the orchestration and coordination layer. In the proposed architecture, the PCEP and BGP-LS protocols are extended to support OpenFlow addresses and datapath identifiers, unifying both GMPLS and OpenFlow domains. The solution is deployed in an experimental testbed and validated. Although the main scope of the approach is the interworking of OpenFlow and GMPLS, the same approach can be directly applied to a wide range of multidomain scenarios, with either homogeneous or heterogeneous control technologies.

Purpose - This is one of the first studies to investigate the influences of institutions in an authoritarian regime on the strategies of firms that operate in a potentially sensitive industry. The study examines how institutional pressures affect the strategies of multi-platform mass media companies (print, broadcast and Internet) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Design/methodology/approach - This qualitative study used a purposive sampling strategy to conduct interviews with 28 senior managers who have responsibility for strategic level decision making in a UAE media company. All of the interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. A mainly deductive process of thematic analysis was undertaken to identify key ideas, patterns and relationships in the data.
Findings - The survey participants reported that increased multi-platform delivery in the media industry brings rewards, challenges and new risks. Although the normative and cultural-cognitive pressures are both strong in the UAE, it is the regulative pressures that seem to have the largest constraining influence on firm decision making and business strategies. The strong institutional pressures existing in the UAE encourage tight coupling, where firm structures and processes are linked and designed in response to the institutional constraints. Evidence was found only of some minor decoupling.
Originality/value - In response to our findings, we hypothesise that in nations under authoritarian rule, political pressures will likely override all other institutional pressures, and that it will be most sensible for firms to adopt tight coupling strategies. However, the success of many UAE firms both at home and internationally suggests that strong institutional constraints do not necessarily act as a barrier to superior firm performance.
