Manuscripts and Early Printed Books

El propósito de este artículo es dar noticia bibliográfica de las relaciones de sucesos que informan sobre las inundaciones causadas por el río Guadalquivir en Sevilla en la primera década del siglo XVII. Estas piezas han aparecido en los últimos años en distintas bibliotecas públicas y privadas. También se edita el texto de la relación compuesta por Diego de Brizuela Corcuera, por ser el primer testimonio poético conocido de la «avenida de san Benito» en 1608.

Giovedì 7 maggio alle 9.00 avrà inizio un ciclo di Webinars su La tecnologia informatica applicata alle scienze filologiche e librarie, coordinati da Gennaro Ferrante e Andrea Mazzucchi. Il primo incontro sarà introdotto da brevi interventi del Ministro dell’Università, Gaetano Manfredi, del Rettore dell’Università di Napoli Federico II, Arturo De Vivo, del Presidente del Comitato ordinatore della Scuola Superiore Meridionale, Giuseppe Recinto, e della Direttrice della Biblioteca Oratoriana dei Girolamini, Simonetta Buttò.

Nei 14 seminari programmati esperti e coordinatori di progetti scientifici internazionali illustreranno alcuni dei campi di azione più fecondi del rapporto tra ricerca filologica e storico-libraria e tecnologie dell'informazione e della comunicazione: tecniche di scansione fotografica multipla e multiluminosa sul manoscritto e sul libro antico (Reflectance Transformation Imaging); nuove procedure e nuovi standard per rendere interoperabili archivi digitali di materiale librario antico (International Image Interoperability Framework); riconoscimento automatico del testo scritto a mano (Handwritten Text Recognition); banche dati che registrano e descrivono le evidenze materiali e i contenuti testuali, linguistici e iconografici nella loro varietà di occorrenze; interventi teorici e metodologici sull'edizione "digitale" e sul supporto computazionale nella critica testuale; elaborazione informatica dei dati per la ricerca storica; Semantic web e Linked Open Data per il patrimonio bibliografico.

The ceremonial entry of Sigismund III into Krakow on 9 December 1587 was an important event in the international arena, but it was particularly important for the urban community of Cracow, who greatly supported his candidacy as the king of Poland. For the capital city, which organised and incurred the costs of the ceremony, the arrival of the newly elected ruler meant a happy ending to the siege and the related war effort. The most detailed description of the entry, and the only illustrated one, which was most likely prepared in advance, is preserved in a printed festival book called Sigismundi tertii Cracoviam ingressus. It shows the topographic and administrative scenery of the entry, its individual stages as well as the artistic and epigraphic setting. The prose-like description of the triumphal entry, the ideologically coherent portrayal of kings and the related poetic works make equal components of the print. They are a visual and literary praise of Sigismund III and the genealogy of his legitimate rule, based on the Jagiellonian roots and his military victory over Maximilian. Reprints, translations, and numerous references to this message in the 16th-and 17th-century printed material ensured its long-standing influence in Poland and abroad. The content of the message was adjusted to the interests of various reading groups and specific political interests, but during the process of its reception the description of the entrada did not lose its identity, and propagated the image of the ceremony depicted in the Sigismundi tertii Cracoviam ingressus for posterity.
The study of Jakub Siebeneicher’s print from the point of view of its textual and visual message, its circulation space within which it functioned, and the role it played in shaping the memory of Sigismund III’s entry into Krakow, made it possible to identify a number of problems related to the ways of representing the artistic setting of the triumphal entry in prints. It was pointed out that in printed language the artistic setting of the entrada was rendered by typographical and graphic means, through cited inscriptions distinguished by different fonts, as well as full-page woodcuts functioning as ideograms of the monarchs and their royal power. In the process of translating one text of culture (artistic setting) into another (printed message) many meanings, symbols and images escaped, but the effect was still a coherent, clear and lasting message about Sigismund III’s entry into Krakow. It imposed ready-made interpretative formulas on subsequent generations of its readers, which spread the fame of the ruler and of the city welcoming him, and harked back to the common heroic and political past of the Kingdom of Poland and Krakow.

Th e paper deals with the mutual relationship between the Cistercian
monastery in Osek and the serf town of Duchcov in the Baroque era.
Attention is especially paid to spatial relationships, as they can be better
captured in historical sources than heterogeneous and dynamic time.
However, if space is not to lose its time dimension, it is necessary to
search for “memory points”. In them, the time aspect is present in a condensed form. Th e other part of the study is devoted to an attempt to create a “memory typology” based on the sources created in the Osek Cis-

tercian Monastery in the 17th and 18th centuries. Th ese sources refl ect
the town of Duchcov in diff erent ways. First, there is a type of memory
related to the spatial delamination of the two dominions – Osek and
Duchcov – in the landscape. Th e approach of the Cistercians monks
who returned to the monastery after a longer hiatus is compared with
the view of the Duchcov dominion subjects. On the one hand, there is a
written record relating to the monastery archives, used by the Osek abbot
Laurentius Scipio (1611−1691); but there is also an elastic tradition of
the Duchcov subjects transmitted only orally on the other. Th is resulted
in disputes over the land boundaries between 1655 and 1660. Second,
there is a type of memory relating to deceased Duchcov burghers. Both
Duchcov fraternities were to perform prayers for them, among them
also the Cistercian Arnoldus Reichmann from Osek (1650−1711). Th e
third type of memory is connected to historical tradition, refl ecting
the town of Duchcov (namely in the times of the Hussite Wars). Th is
tradition has been preserved by two Cistercians from Osek, Antonius
Edelmann (1649−1704) and Malachias Welcker (1643−1712), in their
manuscript “chronicles”. Finally, the forth type of memory is an ancestral memory of prominent Catholic families from Duchcov who, in
compliance with their ancestral tradition, joined the Osek Monastery.
Th ese were Alanus Ōttel from Greiff enau (1643−1707), whose grandfather was a co-founder of the pious Brotherhood of the Visitation of
the Virgin Mary, and Fridericus Mibes (1658–1722). Th e father of the
latter supervised the recatholisation process of the Lutheran mountain
villages directed from the dominion of Duchcov.

This paper draws from a conjecture on Catullus 63,14 suggested by John Percival Postgate in 1912. A systematic investigation through the manuscript sources, many of whom were still unknown to Postgate, revealed some traces of the same emendation already in the Fifteenth century, which are yet to be included in modern critical editions.

Un manoscritto padovano del ‘500 custodisce da secoli un poema inedito che celebra la bellezza “più che umana” di una giovane friulana, Giulia Savorgnan. Una storia fantastica che coinvolge gli dei dell’Olimpo in una fatale disputa sopra l’Università di Padova.
Il poema, opera del pugliese Vito Tesmofilo da Trani, viene qui pubblicato per la prima volta. Lo accompagnano le rime di un altro scrittore folgorato dal fascino di Giulia, Giovanni Cotta.

In 1601 Jacques Du Breul published the editio princeps of three Latin works traditionally regarded as Visigothic, today known as the corpus of Pseudo-Sisbert of Toledo (7th-9th c.); they were allegedly transcribed by the scholar Nicolas Lefèvre from a now lost manuscript coming from the abbey of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (Paris). This paper argues that, for the final section of the last work, the exemplar used was actually the extant Paris, BnF lat. 2876 (12th c.), possibly because the lost manuscript did not transmit the whole text. The identification of the hand of Lefèvre within the marginalia of lat. 2876 proves that it belonged to Lefèvre’s personal library and allows to reconsider the problem of the sources used by Du Breul, suggesting that the text of his edition could be contaminated.
