Jawi, a form of Arabic script in use in insular Southeast Asia, has been employed for writing Malay manuscripts for at least eight centuries (13 th-20 th centuries). Introduced and disseminated through Islamic canonical texts such as the Qur'an, it became the principal means of communication and knowledge production over the years and across the region. Studies of Malay palaeography and orthography have been rare and far between, and are mainly limited to colonial scholars designing the rules to be taught in the educational system and a number of surveys that record the orthography of certain texts. Inspired by a recent publication which concisely discusses the palaeography and orthography of 60 dated or datable Malay manuscripts, the following chapter will expand on some of the observations made by the scholars. I will discuss a number of 17 th-19 th-century manuscripts originating from the Moluccas and compare some characteristics of their orthography with those of the Hikayat Tanah Hitu, a Malay historical narrative compiled in the mid-17 th century. In this exploration of ortho-graphic consistencies and peculiarities in Malay manuscripts originating from one region, I argue that the ambiguity of Jawi was a welcome characteristic that could accommodate the needs of multilingual communities found in the Malay world.

Çalışmamız, Timur’un oğlu Şahruh tarafından 15. Yüzyılın başında -1436 yılındaHerat’ta Uygur harfleriyle Çağatayca/Harzemce olarak yazdırılan Miraçname metnini resimleriyle birlikte ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu konudaki ilahiyat, sanat tarihi tartışmalarına da değinmekteyiz. İslam’da tasvir imkanları uzun yıllardır tartışılan ve çokça ezberin bulunduğu bir alan olduğu için olabildiğince hassas davranmaya çalıştık. Bazı araştırmacılar (Doğan, 2018) bu kitabın dilinin Çağatayca olduğunu da iddia etmişlerdir. Doğu Türkçesine şair Mir Haydar tarafından çevrilen yazmanın metnini hattat Malik Bahşi yazmıştır.

Antoine Galland (ö. 1715) tarafından 1673 yılında satın alınan kitap, Fransa’ya getirilerek Colbert kütüphanesine konmuştur. Burada uzun süre boyunca dili anlaşılmadan korunan kitap, 18. Yy’ın ortalarına doğru Kraliyet kütüphanesine getirilmiştir. Sinolog Abel Rémusat (ö. 1832) tarafından okunabilen eserin bir bölümü o dönemde yayınlanmıştır. Birden fazla sanatçının resimlendirdiği düşünülen eserin üzerinde Arapça ve Osmanlıca notlar bulunmaktadır. Bazı sayfalarda Farsça notların izine de rastlanmaktadır (Seguy, 1977: 7-9). Miraçname kitabının şemse ve ferağ kaydı bölümleri elimizdeki metinde bulunmadığı –yıllar içinde kaybolmuş olması da mümkün- bu bilgileri Miraçname ile aynı mücellette bulunan Tezkirat’ül-Evliya kitabından buluyoruz. Seguy’dan önce Grube (1966: 94), Stchoukine (1954: 54) gibi araştırmacılar da Miraçname’nin Harzemce metninin Mir Haydar tarafından çevrildiğini kabul ederken, Masuya (2014:41) bu bilginin doğru olmadığını, Pavet de Courteille'nin önsözünün yanlış okunmasından dolayı böyle bir karışıklığının oluştuğunu iddia etmektedir

After the establishment of Islam, the concept of a unique unipolar Arabic culture was replaced by the universal Muslim culture. The idea of the Arabic speaking culture was established not only by Arabs but different nations, as well as Azerbaijani-Turks, writing and speaking in that language. Ahmad ibn Mohammed al-Ansari al-Shirwani al-Yemeni (1785-1840), who is believed to be Azerbaijani-Turk, was one of the outstanding members of the Indian aristocracy who left behind the rich legacy of masterpieces, such as manuscripts, textbooks, printed works and translations. Relatively detailed information about the author was given by Mohammed Ali Tarbiyat in his "Danishmandani - Azerbaijan". His family migrated from Shirwan to Yemen, Ahmad was born and grew up here in Hadida. In his adulthood he migrated to India. Started his activity as a teacher of the Arabic language and literature in the Fort William College under the patronage of the East-India Company. Afterwards was invited by the governor of Lucknow Ghaziud-Din Haidar Shah to the Publishing House and worked as an editor and publisher. He is the author of several literary works, such as Nafḥat al-Yemen, Al-ʿAjab al-ʿUjāb, Ḥadīqat al-Afrāḥ, Al-Manāqib al-Ḥydariyyah, Shams al-Iqbāl, Jawāris al-Tafriyyḥ, Baḥr al-Nafāʾīs, Manhaj al-Bayān. Also several translations and editing as:  the Calcutta print version of 1001 nights, Tuhfat al-Kasir, Tarikh Teimur, Qamus al-Firuzibadi, Divan al-Mutanabbi, Kaab bin Zuheir’s qasida Banat Suad, Tarikh Usman and so on.  In all due fairness, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Shirwani's oeuvre was multilateral, rather than monochrome.

When the story of Bathsheba's Bath appeared in Late Medieval Books of Hours, it always prefaced the Penitential Psalms in these manuscripts. Traditionally, these Penitential Psalms were associated with the Deadly Sins. This article will explore the visual and textual implications of this iconography in relation to its placement in Books of Hours and it will emphasize the visual narrative strategies that the artists used to prepare the reader-viewer for the appropriate performance of penitence.

"This paper focuses on the importance of also analysing the structure of Ligorio’s Libro XXXIX on Roman antiquities in the study of its forged inscriptions. First, I will address the complexity of the material structure of this book and illustrate that it is possible to follow this book’s process of composition principally by concentrating on the evolution of the Ligorian handwriting. And then, due to this last aspect, I will demonstrate how it is possible to analyse the distribution of the forged inscriptions inside this book in relation to the three main compositional phases I have identified, as well as the evolution of some aspects regarding the process of creation of the forgeries." The illustrations of the Book of Numbers in the Russian pictorial interpretation of the biblical codex are the subject of the cycle of the researches.  The Chronograph #354 of the sixteenth century from the collection of the State Historical Museum is elected as the source of the biblical miniatures. The paper continues to list the miniatures of the Book of Numbers. Comparative analysis of the biblical texts of the Chronograph, created in the time of Ivan the Terrible, and the English version, KJV created in the beginning of the seventeenth century in the days of James I, complements the research.

Small in numbers relative to global Christianity, multi-ethnic Eastern Christian communities are among the most ancient natives in the wider West Asia region. These lectures highlight the rich historical, theological, literary and cultural heritage of Christian communities in presently much-troubled regions.

Il volume propone l’analisi di una selezione di omeliari in scrittura beneventana (X-XIII secolo), che comprende i manoscritti omiletici della Biblioteca Capitolare di Benevento, un folto gruppo di codici di Montecassino, un manoscritto della Biblioteca Vaticana, quattro manoscritti conservati presso la Biblioteca Vallicelliana di Roma e un codice del Museo diocesano di Salerno. La descrizione accurata del profilo di queste grandi collezioni e dei singoli testi che le compongono rende possibile l’individuazione della presenza/assenza di certi testi patristici o di altre peculiarità riconducibili a milieux geo/culturali ben definiti. Gli omeliari – documento capitale per la storia dell’Ufficio liturgico – divengono così anche uno strumento prezioso per lo studio della letteratura patristica, della sua fortuna medievale, in rapporto con le dinamiche storiche e culturali che sovrintesero alla loro produzione.
The book presents the analysis of a selection of homiliaries in Beneventan script (10th-13th centuries). That is to say: eight homiletic manuscripts of the Capitulary Library of Benevento, several Montecassino codices, one Vatican manuscript, four manuscripts from the Vallicelliana Library in Rome and a codex of the Diocesan Museum of Salerno. The thorough description of the character of these collections, and of the individual texts that compose them, allows to identify the presence or absence of some patristic texts and other peculiarities that can be related to well-defined geo-cultural milieux. The homiliaries – fundamental documents for the history of the liturgical office – are also a precious tool for the study of patristic literature and of its Medieval fortunes if put in relation with the historical and cultural dynamics that determined their production.

The purpose of this presentation is to investigate the professionally specific reading practices that can be reconstructed from British drawing manuals and from their various manuscript copies in circulation during the long eighteenth-century. Compilation and abridgment practices, a well as the material traces left by reading artists  - from paint splatters to marginalia drawings - tend to revise the traditional narrative of a disunited artistic community hindered by its late engagement with continental art theories.

Research on the British adaptations and translations of continental manuals has adopted a bibliographical interest in the circulation of art theory, with a focus on its atrophy as it reached British artists’ studios. But British drawing manuals from the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Society of the Cincinnati Library, the Library of Congress and the Lessing J. Rosenwald Collection bear significant material transformations as their translators, publishers, and readers put a premium on technical diagrams, standardisation of best practice for better outcomes, and the establishment of a vernacular vocabulary. Material evidence from the soiled pages of these how-to manuals shows their readership was far from restricted to a genteel amateur use. A closer look at how they were annotated, used, and further cannibalized as they were taken down in commonplaces, fair-copies and workshop books tells the story of a the artist as reader.  I will question the supposed didactic function of these manuals, and show this practice of compiling sources stemmed from a tight-knit artisan community.
