Ampia panoramica sui centri produttivi di ceramica in età romana nell’intero territorio della Provincia di Pescara a nord del fiume Pescara, parte del territorio degli antichi Vestini orbitante sui due municipi di Pinna Vestinorum ed Angulum. Vengono in particolare presentati gli scavi condotti fra 1999 e 2002 presso l’eccezionale centro produttivo anforario di Marina di Città S. Angelo, corrispondente alla statio romana e relativo approdo di Ad Salinas, lungo la via romana litoranea anche nota come via Flaminia.. unde Brundisium, ove vennero con continuità prodotte fra II secolo a.C. e I secolo d.C. anfore dei tipi greco-italico tardo, Lamboglia 2, e Dressel 6A, unico caso quest’ultimo sin ad allora noto.

Since Maria Teresa Cipriano's and Marie‐Brigitte Carre's seminal 1989 paper ‘Production et typologie des amphores sur la côte adriatique de l'Italie’ in the volume ‘Amphores romaines et histoire économique’, our knowledge of Adriatic Italian wine amphorae has much improved. Most of these ‘new data’, however, remain poorly known among the wider scholarly community and no real update regarding their production loci and distribution patterns has as yet been attempted. This paper fills the void for the central part of the eastern coastline between Rimini and Pescara and reviews the latest evidence regarding the manufacture and circulation of these amphorae. In the process, the central Adriatic area of Italy emerges as a key player in the Late Republican and Early Imperial wine trade. This reassessment provides a new starting point for the diachronic exploration of the Adriatic wine commerce between c.250 BC and AD 150.

The thesis is devoted to an examination of amphora carriers, which sank between the late fourth and the middle first century BC in the territorial waters of Greece and Cyprus or were lost on their long voyage in the international waters of the eastern Mediterranean. It examines the attested amphorae and the available evidence from underwater sites and brings it closer to previously established patterns of amphora distribution.

The work remains unedited and is now outdated. The upcoming update for the shipwrecks located in the Greek territorial waters is presented in a paper of George Koutsouflakis, "The Unharvested Sea: a Century of Underwater Exploration in the Hellenic Archipelagos. The evidence of shipwrecks", forthcoming.
