Jewish Identity

When a family member dies, the loss is of a person. But in cases where that person embodies the last living link to an exilic homeland-a not uncommon occurrence for Jews in the Americas-the death of a parent can also mean the loss of a home. Mexican writer and daughter of Sephardic immigrants, Myriam Moscona chronicles the experience of her unmooring grief after the generations before her die in her novel Tela de sevoya (2012). Compounded losses cause Moscona and her house to become haunted, and the journey seeking roots that that her mourning compels her to is as much about a search for spaces of identity as it is about combatting haunting. Moscona goes to the Balkans to record the last native speakers of Ladino and to see the places her parents once called home. While the trip does not give her new spaces of Jewish belonging in the form of these recovered homelands, it does allow her to divide the past from the present, to separate the places of the dead from the spaces of the living. Her process reveals a complex vector where haunting, belonging and Jewishness meet for children of Diaspora living in the Americas and ultimately proposes an alternative territory where an anchoring Jewish identity might inhere.

למדינה,  בעיקר סביב קבוצת 'אופקים חדשים'. תקופה מאוחרת יותר שזכתה למחקרים
ולתערוכות מקיפות היא העשור של שנות השבעים.  המספר הזעום של פרסומים על
אמנות הציור והפיסול בארץ ישראל של שנות השלושים ראוי לתשומת לב.
מוקד הדיון במאמר הוא האקלים האינטלקטואלי בשדה האמנות בכלל , ובפרט השיח על
האמנות בהקשר לשיח הזהות היהודית,  כפי שהתגלם בארץ ישראל של שנות השלושים.  העיון
הפרטני שאציג בדפים הבאים בכל הנוגע לקשר שבין האמנות החזותית לזהות היהודית ישפוך
אור על מושגים ועל רעיונות רווחים בתקופה.  בעקבות זאת אציע הסבר לדחיקתה של תקופה
זו משיח האמנות הישראלי ומן ההיסטוריוגרפיה המקובלת.

How many Jewish people are there who believe in Jesus?  This is an open questions which is partially addressed in this paper which works with historical material as well as a recent survey of Evangelicals.  2% of those who identify as Evangelicals say they have one or more Jeiwsh parents or grandparents.  The significance of this can be lost but this paper attempts to show how this information may be interpreted and the impact it might have on the modern Messianic Jewish movement.

מסתו של פרויד  ״הפרעת זיכרון על האקרופוליס עומדת במרכז הדיון של מאמר זה הטקסט נכתב בשנת 1936 כעיבוד מחודש ופירוש של זיכרון ישן של פרויד הכתוב בצורת איגרת המוקדשת ליום הולדתו ה-70 של רומן רולן. הטקסט הקצר של פרויד מציע ניתוח פסיכואנליטי לזיכרון חידתי שנותר בו מביקור באקרופוליס שערך בשנת 1904 בלוויית אחיו. בטקסט עולים שני עניינים שונים הכרוכים זה בזה ושאת המכנה המשותף ביניהם המאמר מנסח באמצעות זיקתם למקורות התרבותיים והאינטלקטואליים של פרויד. בהצלבת שני הנושאים, מחד גיסא זהותו היהודית של פרויד מבית ומאידך גיסא החינוך הקלָסי שקיבל בגימנסיה, מתקבלת תמונת חיים שמעורבים בהם כפילות, שניות וסתירות פנימיות. קו התפר התרבותי שניתן לסמן אותו באופן מטפורי בַּמפגש בין אתונה וירושלים מהווה את שלד עלילת ההיסטוריה הפרטית של פרויד, ומוביל את קוראי הטקסט לסבך הבלתי פתור של סיפור חייו. המאמר מציג את מודוס הקינה המאפיין את הטקסט של פרויד דרך מושג אריגת הטקסט וביתר דיוק  דרך הקשרים שנארגים במסה של פרויד בין העת העתיקה לעת המודרנית, בין העבר וההווה של פרויד, ודרך שפת האנלוגיות של הלא מודע .

Recent scholarship recognizes the particular importance of questions of individual and collective identity in framing the history of international law. Legal biography has emerged of late as a key mode of historical analysis for understanding the transformation of international law in the twentieth century. Scholars have evinced particular interest in Jewish lawyers and their roles in shaping key nodes of contemporary international legal theory and practice, notably atrocity law, international human rights law, and international humanitarian law. Yet legal scholars and historians often adopt very different theoretical approaches to problems of Jewish agency, identity, and influence. This introduction surveys the existing literature on this topic and introduces a set of framing questions for the volume as a whole, highlighting the distinctive methodological approach of this volume.

There are many ways in which a Jew can express Jewish identity. One of these is, by living according to the guidelines of halakha-the normative aspect of Torah as explicated by scholarly rabbis. Different understandings of halakha will generate different modes of Jewish halakhic identity. In this article, I seek to illustrate this thesis by consideration of halakhic dynamic in modern times in Northern European vrs. Muslim countries. Subsequently I argue, that the cadre of the Shas movement in contemporary Israel reflects an interesting case in which Jews of Sephardic extraction have internalized central aspects of a non-Sephardic halakhic identity. It is hard to imagine a human society in which change and development do not occur over time. This is true not only of modern societies; even in ancient times and pre-modern societies, change was omnipresent. Sometimes change was sharp and acute; a clear example of this in the history of the Jewish people is the destruction of the Second Temple. But during most of human history social norms evolved at a moderate pace enabling people to imagine, along with Ecclesiastes, that "there is nothing new under the sun". 1 The above held true for the world of halakha as well. Indeed, even bracketing the effects of historical-social change, some dynamic is bound to characterize halakha simply as a result of the intellectual activity of Torah sages: "A beit midrash [hall of study] is never totally without 1 I:9.

The aim of this paper is to analyze Josephus’ geographical use of the terms Idumea (Ἰδουμαία) and Idumeans (Ἰδουμαῖοι) in Antiquitates Iudaicae books I-XI. To Josephus, the Idumeans were the descendants of Esau; more precisely, he saw them as the descendants of Esau’s firstborn son, Eliphas. The main term Josephus uses to denote the homeland of the Idumeans is Ἰδουμαία (and not Ἐδώμ). According to Josephus, Idumea is a large geographical area, and its core includes the Biblical allotments of the tribes of Judah (from south of Jerusalem to Beer-Sheva, reaching the Dead Sea in the east) and Simeon (from Beer-Sheva to the frontier of Egypt).

In his first novel (Lenta Biografia) Chejfec told the story of an unsuccessful transmission of the familial memory and of the Ashquenazi culture. He then dealt with the progressive disappearance of the Jewish traditions and culture within the immigrant community in Argentina from which he comes from (in Los Planetas especially). Confronted to this absence of legacy, Chejfec tried to explore this emptiness and to reclaim his origins via literature, incorporating in his texts the themes of the wandering people, the Yiddish language or the Hassidic stories. However, he is opposed to a Jewish Latin-American literature which would be closed on itself, and claims a literary stance which is between Judaism and national culture.

Si Chejfec narra en su primer libro, Lenta biografía, una transmisión fallida de la memoria familiar y de la cultura asquenazí, también da a leer por otra parte, en particular en Los planetas, la progresiva desaparición de la cultura y las tradiciones judías en la comunidad inmigrante en Argentina de la que él procede. Frente a la ausencia de legado, Chejfec busca explorar esta carencia y reapropiarse sus orígenes vía la literatura, recuperando a su manera un patrimonio literario (el topos del pueblo errante, la lengua idish o los relatos jasídicos). No obstante, se opone a una literatura latinoamericana ensimismada y reivindica al contrario una posición literaria fronteriza entre lo judío y la cultura nacional.

Si Chejfec fait dans son premier livre, Lenta biografía, le récit d’une transmission défaillante de la mémoire familiale et de la culture ashkénaze, il donne à lire par ailleurs, dans Los planetas notamment, une progressive disparition de la culture et des traditions juives au sein de la communauté immigrée en Argentine dont il est issu. Face à cet héritage absent, Chejfec cherchera à explorer ce manque et à se réapproprier ses origines via la littérature, en réinvestissant par exemple le topos du peuple errant, la langue yiddish ou les récits hassidiques. Il s’oppose toutefois à une littérature juive latino-américaine fermée sur elle-même pour revendiquer une position littéraire frontalière entre judaïsme et culture nationale.

This article examines the strategies by which the polylingual and multicultural writings of Clarice Lispector and Joyce Mansour de-essentialize belonging. I argue that both authors transform different aspects of belonging, whether their own or that of others, into complex aesthetic forms which, in their many variations and transformations,
challenge the concept of the natural possession of a given language and, by extension, the concept of identity. The lieu of these transformations, in Mansour’s writings, is the poetic speaker, while, in Lispector’s prose, it is to be found in her experiments with first-person narratives. The article suggests that we understand their major formal innovations as aesthetic comments on the complexities of belonging.
