Decentralization of the Caliphate power early in the 11th century fostered the appearance of multiple local powers on the head of new independent states, which were ruled by different ethnicities. This political configuration of the Taifas had remarkable consequences in the architecture aesthetic. Taking the Caliphal art as a base, they diversified the artistic language of that time.
From a synthetic and comparative study it will be considered why some taifa kingdoms fully assumed the ancient heritage and others, conversely, re-formulated this art language with solutions unseen in the Iberian Peninsula. Consequently, our target is to understand the role played by the art during the 11th century in al-Andalus as a generator of not only legitimizing, but also ideological and identity discourses.

Resumen: El castillo de Miraflores (Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real) es una fortaleza en donde la aplicación del método de
la Arqueología de la Arquitectura se hace totalmente imprescindible para poder reconstruir su evolución histórica. Al
proceso de abandono que sufrió el yacimiento desde la Baja Edad Media, se le sumó su uso como centro agropecuario
en época contemporánea, para terminar con una desafortunada excavación clandestina que hizo desaparecer gran
parte de la estratigrafía del subsuelo. Mediante el estudio de paramentos y el uso combinado de fuentes escritas,
hemos podido documentar que se trata de una obra de frontera claramente almohade, construida muy rápidamente
en unas fechas muy concretas, entre 1196 y 1197, y que responde totalmente a los programas constructivos que
emanan del poder unitario, tanto en sus fábricas de tapial como en las soluciones decorativas con el falso despiece
de sillería conservado en sus paramentos. Tras la conquista cristiana en 1212, en el contexto de la campaña de las
Navas de Tolosa, sufrió ligeras transformaciones al convertirse en encomienda de la Orden de Calatrava, hasta su
abandono definitivo en la segunda mitad del siglo XIII a favor del cercano castillo de Mortara.

Abstract: Castle of Miraflores (Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real) is a fortress where the application of the method of the
Archaeology of Architecture is essential to reconstruct its historical evolution. To the process of abandonment suffered
on this site from the late Middle Ages, we have to add its use as an agricultural center in the contemporary age,
ending with an unfortunate clandestine excavation, which made disappear most of the stratigraphy of the subsurface.
By studying the faces of the walls and the combined use of written sources, we have documented that it is clearly
an Almohad frontier structure. This fortress was built very quickly at a specified time period, between 1196 and
1197, and responds to the constructive programsof the central government, both in the building of tapial and in the
decorative solutions with the false ashlar work preserved in its faces. After the Christian conquest in 1212, within
the context of the military campaign of Navas de Tolosa, Miraflores suffered slight transformations when it become
an Encomienda of the Order of Calatrava until its final abandonment in the second half of the 13th century in favour of
the nearby Castle of Mortara.

Introduction and Background: Despite the long history of urbanization in Iran, urbanization trend in mountainous areas such as Kohgiluyeh region has not received considerable attention yet. According to historical sources, Kohgiluyeh region during the Islamic period has witnessed the emergence of the city of Ziz in the geographical area between Arjan and Semirom.
Aims: The present research aims to determine the location of Ziz, the relative chronology of the city settlment, and the causes of its formation and destruction.
Methodology: The research method is descriptive-analytic and historical-analytic.Based on linguistic information, study of historical sources, the ecosystem of the region, field research, and study of archaeological findings, the location of Ziz and the causes of its deterioration and collapse are investigated and identified in this research
Conclusion: According to the archaeological survey conducted, Ziz is located on the hillside of Mt. Damah on the historical site of Zizenseh in Zizi village in Boyer-Ahmad city. archaeological evidence such as pottery and coins, architectural studies, and historical and geographical sources indicate residence in this city and its prosperity from the first to the sixth century (Islamic calendar). The most important reason for the formation of Ziz can be the rich ecosystem and economic products such as meat and walnut and its location on Arjan communication route to Semirom and Isfahan. However, the most important reason for its collapse is the devastating attacks of the Nizari Ismailis in the fifth century.

The practice of itinerant kingship in early Islam has not attracted much scholarly attention to date. This paper aims to investigate the main evidence bearing testimony to such a practice, in order to draw a preliminary typology. Caliphal mobility (or of government officials) is primarily documented in the context of military campaigns or connected to the pilgrimage to Mecca. A unique example also allows us to highlight a systematic model of itinerant kingship in Umayyad times, coupled with a patrimonial conception of power. These various elements shed a new light on the construction of space in the first Islamic empire.

Résumé: La pratique d’un pouvoir mobile dans les débuts de l’islam n’a guère retenu l’attention des chercheurs. Le présent article se propose d’en recenser les principaux témoignages et d’en esquisser une première typologie. La mobilité califale (ou des agents du gouvernement) est principalement documentée dans le contexte des campagnes militaires ou du pèlerinage à La Mecque. Un exemple exceptionnel permet également de mettre en lumière une pratique de l’itinérance plus systématique à la période omeyyade, articulée autour d’une conception patrimoniale du pouvoir. Ces éléments éclairent d’un jour nouveau la construction de l’espace dans le premier empire islamique.

In this paper the settlement of Mount Altesina (Nicosia, Enna) is included in its historical and topographical context. It also presented a first reading of the Arabic epigraph found in situ at the top of the settlement. Thanks to the re-reading of a passage from Ibn ʿIdhāri it has been possible to situate the Altesina settlement in the historical context of the Islamic conquest of Sicily. A first analysis of the intervisibility allowed, moreover, to identify the topographic points of relief that can be controlled from the top of Mount Altesina and to identify in the latter the point of control of the historical road system of the centre of Sicily.

10 years of Archaeological excavations in Fatimid Cairo (2000 to 2009)
Located in the southern part of the historic city at the footsteps of the prominent Citadel built by Salah ad-Din at the end of the twelfth century, the district of Darb al-Ahmar is an extension of the Fatimid city consequent to the construction of the eastern City wall by Salah ad-Din (Fig. 1). This City wall was uncovered recently and is the eastern boundary of the district. Much of the dense urban fabric constituted since the thirteenth century remains intact and important monuments act as major landmarks for a still lively Community. The Al-Azhar Park, opened to the public in late 2004, provides a gateway and access to tourist circuits in the Historic City and is acting as a catalyst for the regeneration of the Darb al-Ahmar district. The construction of the park in 1998 was at the origin of our archaeological Project.

Abstract:
La tesis doctoral es el resultado de una investigación sobre las relaciones establecidas entre los seres humanos y los animales durante los primeros siglos de la Edad Media en la península ibérica. La principal fuente informativa la constituye una serie de conjuntos de restos animales recuperados mediante metodología arqueológica de cuatro yacimientos distribuidos en el cuadrante sudoriental de la Península: el Tolmo de Minateda (Hellín, Albacete), madinat Ilbira (Atarfe, Granada) y dos sectores integrados actualmente en el casco urbano de Córdoba capital: la Zona Arqueológica de Cercadilla y el arrabal de Saqunda. El marco cronológico de la investigación arranca en el s. VII y concluye en el XII, si bien el grueso de las muestras examinadas provienen de contextos ocupacionales frecuentados entre la segunda mitad del s. VIII y el primer tercio del XI, por lo que los periodos emiral y califal son los mejor representados. Mediante la incorporación de los datos recabados a través del estudio arqueozoológico en un cuadro interpretativo construido a partir de otras líneas de evidencia arqueológica, de la información documental y de una serie de observaciones etnográficas que presentan un valor heurístico particular para interpretar algunos de los resultados observados, el objetivo fundamental consiste en generar conocimiento histórico sobre las dinámicas sociales, culturales, económicas y políticas que presidieron las fases fundacionales de la entidad histórica que conocemos como al-Andalus. Para ello, el planteamiento de la investigación sitúa de manera particular el foco de atención sobre el examen de los patrones de producción, distribución, preparación y consumo de los alimentos de origen animal, con el fin de arrojar luz sobre dos parcelas específicas. De un lado, a partir del empleo como indicador diagnóstico de los hábitos de alimentación, se pretende evaluar el grado de inserción de los agentes consumidores en el orden social islámico y, de esta manera, explorar los ritmos y el avance del proceso de islamización social de al-Andalus. De otro lado, la tesis trata de aportar conocimiento sobre la ganadería andalusí, empleando para ello la capacidad explicativa que el registro arqueozoológico presenta para investigar un subsector agrario particularmente opaco a través de las fuentes documentales. En definitiva, queda patente el potencial informativo del registro arqueozoológico para conocer no solo qué comió la gente en el pasado, sino también los comportamientos y las ideas que se esconden tras una esfera de la experiencia humana profundamente cargada de contenido social, cultural, económico y político como la que representa el ámbito de la alimentación, permitiendo de esta forma contribuir al conocimiento de la formación de al-Andalus desde una perspectiva novedosa eminentemente social.

Transcurridos 25 años desde la celebración en Alicante del IV CAME y 20 años desde el último V CAME de Valladolid (1999) y al encontrarnos en el horizonte del primer cuarto del siglo XXI, ha llegado el momento de abrir una nueva convocatoria para un VI CONGRESO DE ARQUEOLOGÍA MEDIEVAL, de España y Portugal, como espacio de debate y de intercambio de conocimiento de las investigaciones arqueológicas medievales de los últimos años, abarcando el ámbito cronológico del milenio que transcurrió desde la Tardo-Antigüedad hasta el final del Medioevo (siglos V-XVd.C.). Debate que debería englobar desde las metodologías generadas a partir de la incorporación y uso de las Nuevas Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación hasta los datos aportados por las Arqueologías Ambientales, Subacuáticas, Contextuales, de la Arquitectura, de la Muerte, de Mercado, de Género, por citar algunas. Todo ello, sin olvidar la importancia de presentar las novedades arqueológicas que están aportando las excavaciones de revisión de los yacimientos tradicionales de referencia y la de los recientes descubrimientos que, en su conjunto, permiten novedosas relecturas de los registros epigráficos, numismáticos, ceramológicos, metálicos, etc., o de las construcciones, fortificaciones, urbanismo, etc., así como de los discursos y programas ornamentales de la arquitectura y los monumentos. Documentos materiales que nos ayudan a profundizar en el conocimiento de las diferentes culturas histórica y políticamente dominantes y en la de las minorías étnicas y/o religiosas. An edited book of studies by various Australian archaeologists with a research interest in the archaeology of Jordan, from prehistory until Islamic times. The book was prepared for the 8th International Conference on the History and Archaeology of Jordan held in Sydney in July, 2001as part of the University of Syndney's Sesquicentenary Celebrations.

En este trabajo queremos presentar los primeros resultados del estudio de los materiales provenientes del yacimiento de El Tossal del Moro, Benilloba, Alicante, realizado en el marco de nuestra tesis doctoral, en la que buscamos caracterizar el poblamiento en época andalusí de la zona de la Vall de Penáguila, dependiente del hisn homónimo.
Los fondos, depositados en el Centre d´Estudis Contestans, provienen de prospecciones y hallazgos casuales, haciendo necesaria la realización de un inventario, aún en proceso. Este pre-análisis sobre una selección de 386 unidades, entre piezas y fragmentos identificables, nos ha permitido, a partir de su comparación con paralelos regionales, identificar al tacimiento como un ámbito de tipo doméstico, posiblemente una alquería de cierta entidad, y datarlo provisionalmente en época califal, en un arco temporal que abarca del siglo X al XI.

In February 2015, divers off the coast of Caesarea spotted by chance a group of gold coins lying on the seabed. After alerting marine archaeologists of the Israel Antiquities Authority, a preliminary salvage excavation was conducted at the site and more than 2,600 Fatimid period gold dinars and fractions recovered, weighing a total of c. 7.5 kg. The coin's location and accompanying artifacts suggested that the coins originated from a shipwreck. The article gives a first insight into the hoard's content after two years of intensive identification work, presents some preliminary conclusions as for the reasons for its loss and offers some new insights into the circulation of Fatimid coinage in southern Bilad al-Sham.

An accumulation of pottery from a re-used Roman cistern at Tel Hebron (Roumeida) yielded 8–9th centuries CE early Islamic pottery. Several fragments of jugs, jars and cooking pots were analyzed petrographically to determine their clay source. Most forms were locally made, yet the sampled cooking pots and storage jars were imported. These came from various regions including the southern coast and Egypt. Importing various vessel types from
several regions to Hebron indicates strong connections with regional trade routes during the Abassid period.

Few archaeobotanical studies have been undertaken on Islamic period sites in Eastern Arabia. Excavations conducted by Dr. Axelle Rougeulle (UMR 8167) at Qalhât in the framework of the Qalhât Development Project, have provided the opportunity to improve our knowledge on plant consumption and supply strategies. Samples from the workshop B39 (14 th -16 th c. AD) excavated in 2014-2015 have provided a substantial amount of seed and fruit remains that are the object of this study. First, the distribution of plant remains within B39 provides us with hints to the use of the different spaces. Thus it is suggested that domestic activities such as food preparation and the cleaning of crops prior to their consumption took place mostly in room E. Then, most of the remains correspond to crops of tropical origin such as Asian rice (Oryza sativa), finger millet (Eleusine coracana ssp. coracana), mung bean (Vigna cf. radiata), mat bean (Vigna cf. aconitifolia), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and sesame (Sesamum indicum). Their presence at the site raises the question of their origin, either as imported goods or crops cultivated locally. In the case of an importation, the Indian subcontinent seems to be the most probable centre of origin although other regions, notably Yemen, may also be considered. Further, we discuss the possibility for the introduction of tropical crops into local agrosystems present near the site.
