Iscrizioni

The fruitful scientific production of Franco D'Angelo, from the '60s to today, touches on various aspects of the Sicilian Middle Ages and illustrates important testimonies especially in the field of ceramics and numismatics. Every single essay produced by this lovable scholar, who always knows how to reconcile scientific rigour with the "passion" for research, has punctually added, over the years, precious pieces to the investigation of our past, proposing at the same time new ideas and hypotheses to those who approach the history and archaeology of medieval Sicily. Not even the Arabist can escape such solicitation. Especially if, as I do, he investigates coins, pottery or other Sicilian artefacts of the Islamic or Norman age to interpret their inscriptions.
This contribution wants, therefore, to be a small branch of "arabesques" as a testimony of the inseparable link between East and West that characterizes our Middle Ages.

Nel 2009 sono stati eseguiti lavori di restauro sulle pareti dell’esedra sud-occidentale delle Terme di Traiano sul Colle Oppio (Roma) . L’esedra semicircolare è tradizionalmente nota come “Grande Biblioteca”, a causa delle due file di nicchie al suo interno, e si affaccia sul portico che circonda il giardino all’interno del complesso, destinato ad attività sportive, ricreative e sociali. Due differenti corpi scala sono costruiti negli spazi di risulta della struttura quadrangolare in cui è racchiusa l’esedra; essi conducono sia al secondo piano di nicchie all’interno che alle stanze laterali e da qui alla terrazza sopra il portico. Nella metà meridionale dell’esedra sono state trovate 60 nuove iscrizioni dipinte di rosso, simili a quelle già rinvenute nella galleria sottostante, in cui è stato scoperto l’affresco della “Città Dipinta”, che riportano le date scritte giorno per giorno da parte dei lavoratori sui muri, proprio mentre li stavano costruendo. Mediante la comparazione delle varie iscrizioni, si può vedere come più squadre abbiano lavorato in parallelo sulla stessa struttura, innalzando l’esedra, per circa 15 m di altezza, in un tempo di circa due mesi; questa costruzione sembra seguire nello stesso anno quella della galleria sottostante. In 2009 restoration work was carried out on the walls of the south-western exedra of the Baths of Trajan on the Colle Oppio (Roma) where 60 new painted inscriptions were discovered. These were similar to those found in the gallery below, where the fresco of the “Painted City” was discovered, and consist of a list of dates written daily on the walls by the masons, as the construction work was underway. By comparing the various inscriptions, it is possible to show that a number of teams worked in parallel on the same structure, building 15 meters up the exedra in about two months. This work followed the construction of the gallery below within the same year.

This essay examines and discusses a hitherto unpublished drawing reproducing a fresco in Siena, now lost but traditionally attributed to Simone Martini by sources ranging from Ghiberti to Della Valle. The drawing, from the collection of the art historian Jean-Baptiste Seroux d’Agincourt housed in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, prompts discussion regarding the painting’s iconography and style.

Una analisi condotta nel 2006 su due blocchi di roccia rivela l'esistenza di due "contratti" fondiari incisi. Alcuni simboli e il motto "Per non dormire", già dei Salimbeni e poi di D'Annunzio, rendono i cippi rocciosi meritevoli di tutela e di memoria. Proprio come noi, anche gli antichi Romani amavano scambiarsi messaggi "in rete": lungo le vie delle città, sui muri esterni e interni degli edifici, in particolare nelle cauponae, alle terme, nelle palestre e nelle latrine, si potevano leggere quotidianamente graffiti e iscrizioni dipinte contenenti messaggi politici, dichiarazioni d'amore, citazioni poetiche, annunci commerciali e ... molto altro.
