Image theory

O objetivo deste trabalho é refletir sobre o apelo compassivo, a força política e a dimensão testemunhal das fotografias do menino sírio Aylan Kurdi, feitas pela fotógrafa turca Nilüfer Demir em setembro de 2015, na praia de Ali Hoca, em Bodrum, na Turquia. Num primeiro momento, distingue-se essas fotografias na esteira das chamadas "imagens do trauma", ou hiperimagens. Em seguida, destaca-se uma espécie de tópica em torno da qual algumas dessas imagens parecem se reunir, a saber, a presença ostensiva e expressiva de crianças como sujeitos sofredores na construção visual dos apelos compassivos. Argumenta-se, então, sobre a capacidade que imagens como as do menino sírio têm para comunicar a precariedade de certas vidas. Por fim, analisamos a fotografia à luz do potencial político do testemunho e do próprio significado da fotografia enquanto resto. // The aim of this work is to reflect on the compassionate appeal, political power and testimonial dimension of the photographs of the Syrian boy Aylan Kurdi, made by the Turkish photographer Nilüfer Demir in September of 2015, in the beach of Ali Hoca, in Bodrum, Turkey. At first, these photographs are distinguished in the wake of the so-called "trauma images", or hyperimagens. Next, we argue that these images seems marked by the ostensible and expressive presence of children as suffering subjects in the visual construction of compassionate appeals. It is argued, then, about the capacity that images of the Syrian boy have to communicate the precariousness of certain lives. Finally, we analyze the photograph in light of the political potential of the witnessing and the very meaning of photography as rest.

In this article (German and English translation), I reflect on the way images both reflect and determine our way of seeing the natural world. The text was published for the catalogue of the exhibition "Fragile Schöpfung/Fragile Creation" on our relationship to nature, which I co-curated at Dom Museum Vienna in 2020-2021.

The contributions to this collection discuss – from a general perspective and on the basis of concrete examples – how the epistemic potentials of the manifold current strands of image and visual culture studies on images and their perception – which proliferated since the pictorial and the iconic turn – can be made available for the archaeological study of image cultures. They address semiotic and perceptual, frame-semantic, affect-theoretical and cognitive approaches as well as questions of image contexts and the agency of images.

Akustische Phänomene sind unsichtbar und vergänglich. Sie bildlich zu fassen, stellt einen anspruchsvollen künstlerischen Abstraktionsakt dar: eine auditive Sinneserfahrung wird in eine visuelle überführt. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge des Bandes «Klang und Stille in der Bildenden Kunst» untersuchen künstlerische Strategien der Darstellung akustischer Phänomene anhand von Schlüsselwerken, indem aus kunsthistorischer und musikwissenschaftlicher Perspektive epochenübergreifend auf formale und inhaltliche Aspekte eingegangen wird.

I analyse five forms of images: electronic, digital, interactive, networked and living, all of which challenge traditional descriptions and expectations. I analyse them from the technical-ontological, phenomenological and cultural perspective to demonstrate different ways in which they discuss and deconstruct the notion of an image. Finally, I try to propose a new context for understanding the discussed forms of new imagery, i.e. the context of post-imagery.

Das 20. Jahrhundert stand im Zeichen des Zeichens. Über sein Dasein hinaus geht es nun aber primär um dessen Setzung. Wann wird eine Spur zum Zeichen und was bedeutet es, wenn Zeichen bereits Wörter sind, wie Jorge Luis Borges meinte? … In diesem Band geht es um ein suchendes Mäandern zwischen Bildern und Begriffen und den daraus resultierenden Bedeutungsebenen, um das Erkennen von Sinn und dessen Vermittlung. Das Buch bildet ein ganz eigenes Erlebnis – vor allem durch ein haptisches und visuelles Erfassen.

Articulando los aspectos de la filosofía de Fichte que me parecen centrales en mi investigación filosófica actual, en este artículo defenderé que uno de los resultados filosóficos más significativos del pensamiento de Fichte es haber injertado una creatividad de tipo improvisacional en el corazón mismo del riguroso autoconocimiento del saber operado por la Doctrina de la ciencia. Este posicionamiento, teoriza la libertad imaginativa al mismo tiempo como que presuposición ontológica. El resultado es una consecuencia práctica de la reflexión filosófica sobre el saber y de la concomitante auto-reflexión de la filosofía como saber del saber, imagen de la imagen, es decir, como Doctrina de la ciencia.

Die Dissertation behandelt die Frage „Was ist Gestaltung?“ Ausgehend von erkenntnistheoretischen Überlegungen zum Verhältnis von Wahrnehmen und Denken, aus denen sich ein nicht-metaphysisches Wirklichkeitsverständnis ergibt, wird hierbei untersucht, wie Wirklichkeit durch Gestaltung verändert wird. Was geschieht mit irgendetwas Wirklichem dadurch, dass Menschen in dieses gestaltend eingreifen? Im Zuge dieser Untersuchung wird deutlich, dass Gestaltung und Wirklichkeit keine Gegensätze bilden, sondern dass ganz im Gegenteil durch Gestaltung die Wirklichkeit um Dimensionen bereichert wird, die diese zuvor nicht besaß. Die Wirklichkeit wird durch Gestaltung gewissermaßen erst wirklich wirklich. Diese Dimensionen werden durch unterschiedliche Weisen des Gestaltens konstituiert, nämlich der epistemischen Gestaltung, mit den Dimensionen der Natürlichkeit und Naturgesetzlichkeit, der technischen Gestaltung, mit den Dimensionen des Stils und der Funktion und der medialen Gestaltung, mit den Dimensionen der Bildlichkeit und des Zeichens. Alle diese Dimensionen sind Aspekte dessen, wie sich etwas Wirkliches durch Gestaltung verändert, sie sind jedoch nicht auf diese Wirklichkeit zu reduzieren, weshalb alle diese Dimensionen auch an dem selben Artefakt auftreten können. Die Arbeit versucht argumentativ nachzuweisen, dass auf diese Weise die Spezialisierungen der einzelnen Gestaltungsdisziplinen in eine einheitliche Theorie der Gestaltung integriert werden können, die für alle Gestaltungsansätze gleichermaßen Gültigkeit besitzt.

Siyaset Psikolojisi, Türkçe olmayan literatürde gerek deneysel gerekse teorik çalışmalarla oldukça zenginleşmiş bir disiplin olmasına karşılık, Türkçe literatürde yeterince yer bulamamış bir alandır. Bu disiplinin katkılarından olan imge ve denge kuramları, sırasıyla kısaca grupların birbirlerine karşı kalıp yargılar geliştirdiklerini ve bireylerin davranışlarının tutum ve duygularıyla uyumlu olmasını istediklerini, aksi halde bir rahatsızlık hissi gelişeceğini ifade eder. Bu bağlamda çalışmanın argümanı, ontolojik güvenlik literatürüyle düşünüldüğünde; devletlerin tıpkı bireyler gibi davranışlarında denge aradıkları, bu davranışların ikili ilişkilerde imgeler etrafında geliştiği ve bunun ontolojik güvenliği sağladığıdır. İkinci argüman ise, değişmesi zor gözüken kalıp yargılar olsa da imgelerin değişebileceği, ancak bu durumda yine ontolojik güvenlik kaygısının devreye girerek, devletlerin kimlik ve anlatılarıyla bu değişimi meşrulaştırdıklarıdır. Bu bakımdan çalışmada, Türkiye’nin Azerbaycan, Yunanistan ve Suriye ilişkileri incelenmiş, birincil kaynaklar olarak ulusal gazete ve internet haber sayfalarındaki söylemler değerlendirilerek bir söylem analizi metodu kullanılmış; bunun yanında literatürden kaynaklara yer verilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonunda iki argümanın da Türkiye örneğinde doğrulandığı, Siyaset Psikolojisi ve ontolojik güvenliğin birlikte düşünülebileceği görülmüştür.

Although Political Psychology is an enriched discipline with reference to either theoretical or experimental non-Turkish studies, it could not have found enough space in Turkish literature. Having been two of the contributions of the discipline, image and balance theories state respectively that the groups develop stereotypes to each other and the individuals seek behaviours to be coherent with their attitudes and emotions otherwise they feel a sense of disturbance. In this context, considering the literature of ontological security, the study claims that the states look for a balance in their behaviours in just the same way as the individuals, these behaviours take a place around images and it provides ontological security. When it comes to the secondary claim, the study propounds that images may change even though they seem to be static, but in this case, ontological security concern steps in and the states legitimise this change by referring to their identities and narratives. In this regard, the study evaluates interrelations of Turkey with Azerbaijan, Greece and Syria. National newspapers and discourses have been used as primary sources and it has been tried to follow the method of discourse analysis. At the end of the work, it is seen that both claims of the study were confirmed regarding the case of Turkey and that both Political Psychology and ontological security share compatible logics.
