It is often argued that the standard type of "development" based upon the production of export crops has not benefited poor women in underdeveloped countries. Research has shown that poor women and children actually lose from cash cropping in many situations. Our research documents the actual process of change which took place in a Maya village as a result of the introduction of sugarcane in 1973. It resulted in the loss of a female resource base and lack of improvement in child nutrition. Thus, sugarcane created profit for the village but not progress in terms of human well being and child nutrition.

Abstract:  Movement improvisation is an embodied, transformational practice that can aid in understanding complex systems and relationships. When practiced in groups, it can develop a capacity to respond to complexity with increased creativity and cooperation. This type of embodied wholeness-in-action serves to promote awareness of and familiarity with the ever-changing movement inherent to life. As we become more comfortable in face of the ever-shifting unknown, we begin to respond rather react to it, accepting our place in the animate and interdependent worlds we are a part of. As we practice participating in life, dancing with it rather than attempting to arrest its constant flow, we are positioned to participate more consciously in the creation of our shared world and, potentially, to participate consciously in our evolution as a species.

Antigonon leptopus is a smothering, habitat-transforming vine with showy pink flowers. Originating in Mexico, it is now widespread or invasive on tropical islands around the world, including the West Indies, as a consequence of active human dispersal and disturbance. Using mixed methods research, we assessed the species’ (1) historical geographic spread throughout the Americas, (2) local ethnobotanical importance in Jamaica, and (3) biomedical potential as an herbal medicine. Methods included georeferencing of timestamped herbarium collections from pre-1900 to 2016, literature review, and ethnobotanical research in rural and urban Jamaica (n = 58 participants). Results demonstrated that A. leptopus has spread aggressively in the West Indies since the 1950s. It has become a problematic invasive species in urban Jamaica, which has likely facilitated its local popularity as an herbal medicine. In urban Jamaica, ethnobotanical interviews ranked the species as the fourth most frequently reported medicinal plant. In contrast, A. leptopus was present but did not dominate the vegetation in rural Jamaica, and was never mentioned during interviews. The biomedical literature offers limited support for its biological activity, while showing no acute toxic effects. The ethnobotany of A. leptopus showcases the dynamic interplay between people, plants, and the
environment.

Zusammenfassung: Von 2007 bis 2016 untersuchte ein interdisziplinäres Projekt im Unterengadin (Graubünden, Schweiz) die alpine Weidewirtschaft. Im Fimbertal/Val Fenga wurden in über 2000 m Höhe spätbronzezeitliche bzw. hallstattzeitliche Baustrukturen entdeckt, die in Verbindung mit zeitgleichen Talsiedlungen um Ramosch als Nachweis für eigentliche Alpwirtschaft in prähistori-scher Zeit interpretiert werden. Um diese idealtypische Kombination eines gestuften Tal-Alp-Systems und die gesamtwirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Viehwirtschaft besser zu verstehen, wurde eine GIS-gestützte Szenario-evaluation der prähistorischen Landschaftsnutzung ausgeführt. Da zur Größe und Struktur der Siedlungen keine ausreichenden Daten vorhanden sind, wurde eine theoretische Berechnung der maximalen Bevölkerungs- bzw. Vieh-/Herdenzahl angestrebt. Die Basis dazu bildet ein komplexes Subsistenzmodell, das aus der archäologischen, physiologischen und landwirtschaftlichen Fachliteratur ausgearbeitet wurde und den Flächenbedarf von Ackerbau und Viehzucht berücksichtigt. Anhand separat modellierter landwirtschaftlicher Nutzungsflächen im Einzugsgebiet (site catchment) der jeweiligen Siedlung lässt sich so die maximale Tragkraft (carrying capacity) bzw. Bevölkerungszahl ermitteln. Die alpine Topografie wird dabei als landwirtschaftlich stark limitierender Faktor betrachtet, sodass eine wachsende Siedlung bzw. Bevölkerung dazu gezwungen wäre, das Vieh im Sommer auf weiter entfernte Hochweiden auszulagern. Aus den Modellen kann allerdings kein ökonomischer oder ökologischer Druck als primärer Grund für die Ausformung der Alpwirtschaft belegt werden. Es wäre in den Talsiedlungen möglich, Ackerbau und Viehwirtschaft für bis zu 200 Personen ganzjährig in unmittelbarer Siedlungsnähe zu bewerkstelligen. Die saisonale vertikale Mobilität muss daher aus anderen Gründen eingeführt worden sein, möglicherweise für die strategische Mehrproduktion landwirtschaftlicher Erzeugnisse für den inner- und transalpinen Gütertausch.

Abstract: Between 2007 and 2016 an interdisciplinary project explored the Alpine pastoral economy in the Lower Engadine region (Grisons, Switzerland). Late Bronze Age or Hallstatt-period structures were discov-ered at 2000  m a.s.  l. in the Fimbertal/Val Fenga valley and were, in association with contemporary settlements in the valley around Ramosch, interpreted as evidence of an actual Alpine pastoral economy in prehistoric times. To gain a better understanding of such an ideal combination of a tiered Alp-valley system on one hand and the overall economic significance of livestock farming on the other, a GIS-based scenario evaluation of prehistoric land use was carried out. Since the data available on the size and structure of the settlement is not sufficiently large, the aim was to achieve a theoretical calculation of the maximum number of people and livestock. This calculation was based on a complex subsistence model which was devel-oped from archaeological, physiological and agricul-tural specialist literature and took into account the area required for crop cultivation and animal husbandry. Based on separately modelled areas of farmland within each site catchment, this allowed us to calculate the maximum car-rying capacity or population sizes. The Alpine topography was seen as a severely limiting factor with regard to agri-cultural output, which would mean that an expanding settlement or population group would be forced to move their livestock to higher pastures further afield during the summer months. The models, however, have not allowed us to state that economic or ecological pressure was the primary reason for the evolution of an Alpine pastoral economy. It would have been possible by means of crop cultivation and animal husbandry to sustain a population of up to 200 people living in or around each valley set-tlement all year round. Seasonal vertical mobility must therefore have been established for other reasons, possi-bly in order to increase the output of agricultural produce for exchange within and beyond the Alpine region.

Résumé: De 2007 à 2016, un projet interdisciplinaire pour la Basse Engadine (canton des Grisons, Suisse) s’est consacré à l’économie pastorale en milieu alpin. A plus de 2000  m d’altitude, dans la vallée du Fimber/Val Fenga, on a découvert des structures d’habitat datant du Bronze final et de l’époque de Hallstatt. Elles peuvent être corré-lées avec certaines occupations contemporaines de fond de vallée s’articulant autour de Ramosch, et témoignent d’une véritable économie alpestre à l’époque préhisto-rique. Pour mieux comprendre un système qui correspond à une combinaison idéale entre vallée et alpages, de même que pour cerner l’importance économique de l’élevage, on a effectué une évaluation de différents scénarios d’ex-ploitation du paysage à l’époque préhistorique, basée sur les SIG. Comme on ne dispose pas de données suffisantes concernant les dimensions et la structuration des habi-tats, on a procédé au calcul de la population théorique maximale, répétant l’exercice pour le nombre d’animaux ou de troupeaux. A cette fin, on a eu recours à un modèle de subsistance complexe, mis en place grâce aux données fournies par la littérature spécialisée et tenant compte de données archéologiques, physiologiques et agricoles, sans oublier les surfaces nécessaires à l’agriculture et à l’élevage. Sur la base des zones d’exploitation agricole régionales, modélisées individuellement (site catchment) pour chacun des sites, on peut établir quels étaient la charge maximale (carrying capacity) et le nombre d’habi-tants. Dans ce modèle, la topographie du milieu alpin est considérée comme un facteur particulièrement contrai-gnant pour l’agriculture, impliquant que la croissance d’un village ou de sa population devait déboucher sur le déplacement du bétail durant l’été vers des pâturages d’al-titude éloignés. Ces modèles ne permettent toutefois pas d’établir la présence d’une pression économique ou écolo-gique qui aurait été la cause majeure de la mise en place d’une économie alpestre. Dans les habitats de vallée, il était possible de subvenir, grâce à l’agriculture et à l’éle-vage, aux besoins d’une communauté comptant jusqu’à 200 personnes, durant toute l’année et à proximité immé-diate des villages. La mobilité saisonnière, avec des dépla-cements en altitude, relève donc d’autres intentions, peut-être une surproduction stratégique de produits agricoles, destinée à l’échange de biens intra-alpin et transalpin.

Hunting and gathering is an important activity in many subsistence horticultural societies. The paper outlines aspects of hunting among the Maring of the New Guinea Highlands, where a prime objective of the hunt is the 'production' of bird plumes and marsupial pelts of value in traditional decorations and trade. Discussion outlines restrictions and limits on hunting and their effects on the intensity ol hunting. The productivity of hunting in several New Guinea societies is compared with the productivity of hunter-gatherer societies. lt is suggested that demographic factors have a greater direct impact on prey populations and on productivity of hunting among horticulturalists than among hunter-gatherers.

In Abgrenzung zur damals dominierenden Human Relations-Schule, die auf Ideen der Ezienz und Planbarkeit von Organisationen zurückgrei, gilt Hughes' Interesse dem kollektiven Handeln in Institutionen. Dabei betrachtet er or-ganisiertes Handeln vorrangig unter Bedingungen gesellschalichen Wandels und öko-logischer Einüsse. Seine Entscheidung von Organisation nur im Gerundium, als einem fortlaufenden Prozess der gesellschalichen Organisation/Desorganisation zu sprechen (Hughes , S. f.), ist auf die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk von William I. omas und Florian Znaniecki () zurückzuführen. » Men and their work « setzt sich mit der sozialen Organisation von Arbeit, also der gesellschalichen Aushandlung der Arbeitsteilung, Karrieren, des beruflichen Presti-ges und sozialen Status von Individuen auseinander. Die einzelnen Beiträge sind keine in sich geschlossenen empirischen Studien, vielmehr entfalten sie übergreifende ana-lytische Konzepte und Überlegungen, die zum Teil erst in späteren Texten ausführli-cher ausgearbeitet und erläutert werden. Der Begri der Institution, der im Gesamtwerk von Hughes für einen durchgehenden konzeptuellen Referenzpunkt sorgt und anhand diverser Beispiele (Unternehmen, Familien, Kirchen etc.) stets weiterentwickelt wird, dient auch hier als ein Schlüsselkonzept und heuristisches Instrument der Analyse der Phänomene der Arbeitswelt und ihres Wandels. Institutionen sind als relativ dauerhae Formen des Zusammenwirkens von Indivi-duen aus gemeinsamen Anlass deniert (Hughes , S.). Im Gegensatz zum Orga-nisationsbegri, der zwischen Mitgliedern und Nicht-Mitgliedern unterscheidet, stellt Hughes mit dem Institutionenbegri die Fluidität der Einbindung-und Mitwirkungs-formen der Individuen in Institutionen in den Vordergrund (Hughes , S. f.). So sehen zum Beispiel Wohltätigkeitsorganisationen einerseits die Rollen von Funktionä-ren und aktiven Mitglieder vor, andererseits gibt es eine nur vage umrissene Rolle des Spenders. Aufkommen und Fortbestand koordinierter Aktivität sind Ergebnis der kon-tinuierlichen » unternehmerischen « Mitwirkung von Akteuren an der Weiterführung und dem Erhalt von Institutionen und keine bloße Überlieferung. Indem Hughes In-stitutionen als » going concerns « (, S. f.) bezeichnet, betont er, dass diese immer schon auf aktuell gültigen gesellschalichen Bedürfnissen, Ideen und Interessen auf-bauen. Auf der Ebene lokaler Gemeinschaen entwickeln sich Institutionen in Bezug aufeinander. Darüber hinaus reagieren sie auch auf externe Irritationen wie technologi-sche Innovationen, soziale Bewegungen, demograschen Wandel und das Aufkommen neuer » going concerns «. This research explores critical environmental concepts from the standpoint of political ecology. It contrasts the Ecuadorian Kichua indigenous concept of Sumak Kawsay (i.e., living well), with discourses about natural, urban and rural areas. Sumak Kawsay was included in Ecuador’s 2008 constitution as an alternative to the neoclassical idea of development. This work reveals interesting insights from a variety of social and political viewpoints from both rural and urban areas. The research is based on the medium sized city of Cuenca, which is located in the southern Ecuadorian Andes. We used an adaptation of the Q Method to investigate stakeholders’ perceptions. Four remarkably well-defined viewpoints were revealed. Although these views contrast strongly with Sumak Kawsay, it is possible to transform this paradigm in the foundation of Cuenca’s public policies and institutional structure.

El objetivo principal de este artículo es demostrar que la biomimética es una ciencia compleja y transdisciplinar que representa un meta-modelo para mejorar la economía, ingeniería, diseño, arquitectura, urbanismo, industria, tecnología, política, educación, energía, arte, etc. y también nos abre las puertas al desarrollo regenerativo. Mientras que la noción de desarrollo sostenible está enfocada en minimizar el impacto negativo de los humanos en el planeta, el desarrollo regenerativo se enfoca en maximizar el impacto positivo del ser humano en la Tierra. En este trabajo también se presentan las diferencias epistemológicas entre la Ciencia Moderna y las Ciencias de la Complejidad. Como resultado, la investigación defiende que la biomimética constituye un meta-sistema de pensamiento que busca regenerar el sistema socio-ecológico mediante una relación más cooperativa y menos dominadora con la naturaleza. Este concepto biocéntrico establece un nuevo imaginario colectivo basado en lo que podemos aprender de la naturaleza, y no en lo que podemos extraerle. Además, este bioconocimiento se aborda desde el fenómeno de la permacultura, basado en asentamientos humanos locales cuya filosofía de de vida emula los modelos socio-ecológicos de las comunidades aborígenes tradicionales de Australia. Por último, se concluye que la Revolución Biomimética representa el inicio de una nueva era civilizatoria que busca transformar la matriz productiva del capitalismo globalizado actual con el fin de respetar los límites biofísicos establecidos por los ecosistemas naturales

Resumen El derecho de acceso al agua potable ha ido evolucionando conjuntamente con el desarrollo tecnológico y el avance en materia de derechos humanos. En este artículo, se discute el asunto del agua como un derecho humano basado en el análisis del Foro Mundial del Agua (FMA) que involucra al sector público, privado y científico, y de la gestión de recursos hídricos en Latinoamérica. Se destaca la importancia del FMA y su efecto en la comunidad internacional, mientras el asunto agua progresa en su trascendencia. Latinoamérica presenta tres modelos de gestión del agua: privatización, gestión gubernamental y gestión comunitaria. A través de la presentación y análisis somero de una serie de casos, se pone de manifiesto el carácter transversal de los problemas que afectan a la gestión eficiente del agua, sometido a retos y limitaciones. La metodología utilizada fue la revisión crítica de la bibliografía secundaria y la literatura académica. The description of ecosystems necessarily reduces their complexity to a few measurable and controllable variables. Environmental monitoring practices of some indigenous and rural societies are significant in this context. In this paper, we examine the ways in which an indigenous people understand and deal with complexity, using the example of Cree hunters of James Bay in the Canadian eastern subarctic.
