History of Modern France

The article explores a sixteenth-century lawsuit concerning an ecclesiastical benefice of the University of Paris. If we look for the causes of future collisions in the 1586 court hearings, then we should speak more generally about the conflict between the faculties of theology and arts, between the Dean and the Rector, or between the Sorbonne and the college of Navarre. Latent rivalry, hitherto shadowed by struggle against ‘common’ enemies, such as Protestants and Jesuits, or against royal encroachments on academic privileges and property (such as Pré-aux-Clercs) and attempts to implement a radical reform of colleges, would boil over into an open conflict in the middle of the seventeenth century. The history of the University served as a weapon in all these conflicts. The author scrutinizes the lawyers’ arguments as building materials for inventing the historical tradition of the University of Paris.

There have been a lot of discussions about CBD – the non-psychoactive component of cannabis – lately. See, for example, this recent article in the New York Times. Guba points out that France’s short-lived experience with CBD cafes shows how history is continuously repeating itself, especially in terms of drug policy, and that a better understanding of how nations have dealt with intoxicants in the past could prevent the same mistakes from being made over and over again.

During a September 2017 ceremony commemorating the 500 years of the Reformation, French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the contributions of Protestantism to France in the development of the 1905 Law of Secularization (Laïcité). Indeed, the French concept of secularism has been clearly defined as the absence of religious influence in state affairs. This legal demarcation was initially sparked in the second half of the 19th century to limit the Catholic Church’s involvement in education and scholarship with much of the support of major Protestant leaders. And while secularism today can be understood as forms of anti-religious movements or sentiments, French Laïcité is often recognized as means of freedom of religion, even by Evangelicals. This sociohistorical paper examines the reasons the 1905 Law of Secularization in France and will discuss the ensuing consequences and missiological implications for a country that has embraced secularism for over a century.

Acteur majeur de l'histoire de la France, Adolphe Thiers demeure le grand absent de l'historiographie des libéraux, et plus généralement, de la pensée politique du xixe siècle. À la différence de Tocqueville, Constant ou Guizot, Thiers est resté dans l'ombre, ignoré, boudé, voire éconduit, et aujourd'hui encore, la seule mention de son nom suscite la controverse. En suivant les vicissitudes d'une vie politique longue de plus de cinquante ans, cet ouvrage essaie de comprendre pourquoi et, sans réhabiliter « le boucher » de la Commune, il vise à éclairer ce qui se joue, dans la carrière de ce Machiavel du xix e siècle, des contradictions de notre modernité politique. Jeter un nouveau regard sur l'homme de la contingence et du pouvoir, c'est mettre en évidence l'interpénétration constante des idées et de la pratique au sein du jeu politique. En revenant sur Adolphe Thiers, l'homme d'action par excellence, ce livre entend donc esquisser une histoire pragmatique du politique lui-même inséparable d'une histoire de ses usages. Stephen W.
