History of Elites

According to the Great Privilege of Mary of Burgundy (1477), the legal boundaries between the comital bailiffs of Flanders and the region they ministered, had to be respected. A recent study, comparing the list of bailiffs to the list of alderman, implied that this was certainly the case in the castellany of Furnes (Veurne). However, a more detailed research shows that all of the bailiffs from 1477 up to the beginning of the 16th century had connections to the region, which were established years before they were appointed: by possessions (a.o. fiefs), by marriage, by being an alderman, by military activities… Several of them were even tied by close family relations or because they took over staff and personnel. The article investigates these links and presents a completely revised list of the bailiffs of the castellany of Furnes up to 1586.

Il saggio affronta il tema degli indirizzi educativi e di istruzione sviluppati presso le élites intellettuali al servizio del principe nel tardo Quattrocento, valutando in particolare l’apertura, espressa dagli uomini di cultura che operarono nel sistema di governo e nella corte dei duchi di Savoia, verso aspetti pedagogici di orientamento umanistico da adottare nella formazione dei propri figli, destinati a seguire le carriere paterne come consiglieri ducali, officiales e talvolta docenti universitari. Il tema è principalmente approfondito attraverso la strategia educativa messa in atto per Scipione Cara dal padre Pietro, letterato e consigliere ducale di primissimo piano, il quale affidò l’educazione del figlio al maestro di retorica e umanista Ubertino Clerico, autore di una lunga epistola Exortatio ad virtutem indirizzata all’allievo Scipione.
This essay focuses on the reception of humanistic pedagogy in the education of intellectual élites in the late fifteenth century. The complex theme is investigated through a case study, i.e. the education of Scipione, son of Pietro Cara, an important jurist who was active at the Studium of Turin and at the court of the Savoy. Scipione Cara studied in the school of the humanist Ubertino Clerico, who dedicated the paraenetic epistle Exhortatio ad virtutem to him.

This thesis investigates the weapons and combatants depicted in the vascular and parietal funerary paintings of Campania and Lucania, whose production began in the second half of the fifth century and died out at the beginning of the third century BC. We intend to show that we can identify a particular military ideology visible through the paintings, which is situated at the confluence of the religious (eschatological), military and social spheres. The individual military exploit is celebrated through the composition called the "Return of the Warrior", depicting a horseman bringing back the spoils (spolia) of his defeated enemy, a key element allowing the deceased combatant to attain immortality. We will also see that the fighting techniques are focused on dueling. Single combat is the most likely to allow the victor to seize the spoils of his defeated opponent. The specifics of the battle as it is represented is characteristic of archaic warfare, which differs in substance from modern warfare. The paintings studied thus reveal a particular structure of the battle, characteristic of archaic warfare, which differs in substance from modern warfare. We will also be able to confirm the military, social and institutional upheavals known from ancient sources that took place in central and southern Italy during the last third of the fourth century, such as the Roman-Campanian rapprochement, the reform of Appius Claudius and the Samnite wars.

Cette thèse porte sur les armes et les combattants représentés dans la peinture funéraire vasculaire et pariétale de Campanie et de Lucanie, dont la production commence dans la seconde partie du Ve siècle et s’éteint au début du IIIe siècle avant J.-C. Nous entendons montrer ici l’existence d’une idéologie élitaire particulière, dont les représentations permettent de discerner la trame et qui se situe à l’articulation des sphères religieuse (eschatologique), militaire et sociale. Cette idéologie militaire est construite autour de l’exploit militaire individuel, porté aux nues par la composition du « retour du guerrier », figurant un cavalier rapportant les dépouilles (spolia) de son ennemi vaincu, élément-clé permettant au combattant défunt d’accéder à l’immortalité. Les techniques de combat représentées dans ce contexte sont principalement celles du duel, qui constitue le mode d’affrontement le plus à même de permettre au vainqueur de se saisir des dépouilles de son adversaire. Les peintures étudiées révèlent ainsi une structure particulière de la bataille, qui relève d’un mode de guerre archaïque où les enjeux diffèrent de ceux de la guerre moderne de type clausewitzienne. L’examen des peintures permet également de confirmer les bouleversements militaires, sociaux et institutionnels connus par les textes qui ont lieu en Italie centrale et méridionale au cours du dernier tiers du IVe siècle, comme le rapprochement romano-campanien, la réforme d’Appius Claudius et les guerres samnites.

Abstract: While Sufi writings have largely depicted futuwwa as the selfless virtue of upright young men, there has been, throughout Islam's intellectual history, an underlying current characterised by brave rebelliousness, a current tied to the virtue's complex relationship with urban fraternal societies. This paper investigates Muḥyī al-Dīn Ibn ʿArabī's (d. 638/1240) deliberate response to futuwwa's implications of recalcitrance. Making a case for a law-abiding variety of the virtue, Ibn ʿArabī builds a theoretical frame in which this manly trait, one of consideration and altruism, mimics divine attributes , especially a divine calculating wisdom. In doing so, Ibn ʿArabī performs a role that Jeff Mitchell describes as the prerogative of noble elites, historically speaking, namely, the social construction of virtue. As is argued here, while Ibn ʿArabī makes a careful case for a law-abiding futuwwa, the lingering resonances of the virtue's gangster associations indicate that social influence is, to a degree, reciprocal. That is, while Ibn ʿArabī's framing of futuwwa makes a detailed and metaphysically-substantiated case for law-abidingness, his argument also suggests, however implicitly, that the virtue cannot completely escape its non-elite outlaw framework.

This book deals with the reception of Italian elitism in the United States, identifying its key protagonists, phases, and themes. It starts from the reconstruction of the scientific and political debates aroused in the United States by the works of Mosca, Pareto, and Michels, and moves on to define their theoretical influence in the American scientific and academic contexts. The analysis takes into consideration the period from the first contact between elitists and American academia in the early 1920s to the publication of The Power Elite by Mills, in 1956, which marks the emancipation of American elitism. After introducing the fundamental principles of elite theory, the first part of the study reconstructs the debate that it aroused beyond the Atlantic. The second part examines the original American reworking of the elitist lesson, concentrating on the works of the authors most strongly influenced by it: Joseph A. Schumpeter, Harold D. Lasswell, and Charles W. Mills. The book aims to shed light on the contribution of Italian elitism to the development of American political thought.

Twenty-five years after the emergence of the Other Serbia, this intellectual circle still remains an unexplored topic. It is often used as a mean for political disqualification, due to the fact that their ideas were never analyzed with structural and historical determinants taken into consideration. In order to do this, and provide an answer to the broad question, what Other Serbia is, this research used interpretivist approach with special emphasis on close-reading and historical method. The historical and structural determinants were subsumed into four ‘critical junctures’, Belgrade’s student rebellion in 1968, the 1974 Constitution, the 1986 Memorandum and the war as a direct trigger for the emergence of this intellectual circle. The main ideas identified are the anti-war platform (normative and analytical part), the struggle against collectivism and the struggle for modernization. They chose particular ideas, radically different in every sense from those embraced by the dominant nationalist intellectuals. This happened due to the public isolation they were subjected to, the context of war, and the fact that they represented intellectual counter-elite that sought to delegitimize the dominant intellectual elite, their position, as well as the factual foundation they were building it upon.

The study of the medieval elites is one of the traditional subjects of Czech historical archaeology. However, several distinct theme, chronological and regional discrepancies can be traced within this field; besides, the research communities that devote themselves to these issues can be certainly characterized as disparate. This contribution seeks to identify these discontinuities and to determine their causes in the context of the development of the Czech medieval studies and in the public discourse. This analysis is followed by a discussion-based section which demonstrates on selected examples (key issues of research into central locations of pre-Přemyslid Bohemia, the concept of the so-called Přemyslid domain, the archaeological image of the origins of the nobility, and the traditional typology of castles and manors) the theoretical and conceptual limits which Czech archaeology of the medieval elites has deliberately set itself, in the past and now. The paper closes with the identification of possible points of departure and with proposed steps needed to improve the existing situation.

Sin embargo, si se dio una heráldica propia que extendería su influencia a los pueblos eslavos: rusos, búlgaros y serbios. Se trata de una heráldica muy distinta a la de Europa Occidental, en su formato, contenido y regulación.

When in 2007 the rulers of an elite group of industrialized nations met in Germany to hold their G8 summit, the venue of Heiligendamm was not a random choice. Certainly, the remote location enabled security forces to prevent protesters, who numbered in the tens of thousands, from disturbing the summit. A more convincing reason to choose Heiligendamm, however, was its air of luxury and seclusion, which derives from its long history as a place where the elites have rubbed shoulders and members of high society have socialized. In this article, I will shed some light on the composition of the elite that met in the Mecklenburg seaside spa of Heiligendamm during the 19th century and document the process of its transition, by presenting evidence from the official visitors' lists of the bathing facilities. At the same time, I want to reassess the dictum of the spa's internationality. Did the elite that visited this venue have a transnational character? Did European elitist circles become established during the leisure activities? In what way and to what extend was internationality important to Heiligendamm?
