History of Astrology

Andrés de San Martín, a pilot who participated in the Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe, is one of the least known crew members of the armada. Historians have mainly paid attention to his role calculating longitude during the voyage, ignoring his role as an astrologer. In this article, I examine how San Martin was represented in Spanish and Portuguese sources dealing with the issue of the position and possession of the Moluccan Islands. I argue that San Martín only emerges as a relevant actor thanks to the Portuguese chronicles of the second half of the sixteenth century. As I show, he was always closely linked to astrological knowledge through which the pilot tried to guide the crew to the Spice Islands.

Dans la glyptique astrologique médicale de l'époque romaine impériale les principes qui régissent le transfert de puissance de la pierre gravée au corps humains se fondent sur les doctrines de mélothésie. À l'intérieur de cette catégorie, l'effet bénéfique d'une planète ou d'une constellation zodiacale peut guider le choix de la pierre dans des buts thérapeutiques. Notre enquête vise tout d'abord à examiner les critères principaux qui permettent de définir un motif sur une intaille comme astrologique. Successivement, l'analyse des doctrines de mélothesie (où à chaque partie du corps humain correspond un astre bien précis) permettra d'évaluer comment cette association permet le recours à des remèdes issus de gemmes qui ont des affinités naturelles avec les organes malades par l'intermédiaire des corps astraux qui leur sont liées (planètes, décans, signes du Zodiaque) afin de les guérir. Abstract In medical astrological glyptics of the Imperial Roman time, the principles governing the transfer of power from the carved stone to the human body are based on the doctrines of melothesia. Within this category, the beneficial effect of a planet or a zodiacal constellation can guide the choice of stone for therapeutic purposes. Our investigation aims first of all to examine the main criteria which make it possible to define a motif on an intaglio as astrological. Successively, the analysis of the doctrines of melothesia (where to each part of the human body corresponds a very precise star) will allow us to evaluate how this association enable the recourse to remedies resulting from gems which have natural affinities with the sick organs through the astral bodies which are linked to them (planets, decans, signs of the Zodiac) in order to heal them.

Astrosophie ist ein auf Himmelskörperkonstellationen gerichtetes Reflexionsfeld vorzugsweise von Esoterikern und Okkultisten. In Bezug auf die gewöhnliche traditionelle Astrologie wird der Begriff seit Jahrhunderten in Abgrenzung zu Astronomie und Astrologie benutzt und publiziert und befindet sich bereits 1687 im Titel eines "wichtigen und einflussreichen astrologischen Werkes"[1] als lateinisierte „Astrosophia“, nämlich in der „Universa Astrosophia Naturalis“ von Antonius Franciscus de Bonatti.[2][3] sowie 1737 in der "Astrosophia numerica in qua generaliter tabulae", von Angelo Capello,[4] Der Ursprung des Begriffs Astrosophie geht in die Zeit der Sumerer[5] zurück, hat in verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen Beachtung erfahren und wurde umfangreich publiziert.

A dévák és aszurák harcának egyik fő fejezetét alkotja az a rész, amikor a dévák megkérik Visnut, hogy mivel elfogyott az erejük, a kozmikus óceán kiköpüléséhez az ellenségtől kérjen segítséget. Az istenség eléri, hogy átmeneti fegyverszünet legyen a két fél között és megkéri Vaszukit, az alvilág kígyódémonát, hogy segítsen ezen művelet végrehajtásában. Köpülőkötélként a világhegyet botként használva tizennégy mágikus entitást nyernek ki az óceánból, utolsóként az ambróziát/nektárt/szómát. Bár az aszurák átmenetileg megszerzik az isteni nedüt, Visnu elcsalja tőlük a nemes italt, és a dévák isszák meg az egészet, miáltal visszatér erejük. Ekkor a kígyó ittas dévának álcázva magát a maradék nektárhoz férkőzik és iszik belőle. A Nap és a Hold átlát a szitán, de mivel már ivott az ambróziából, halhatatlanná vált, így Visnu hiába vágja le a fejét, kettévált teste Brahma parancsára Rahuként /fej/ és Ketuként /farok/, árulójukat, a Napot és Holdat örökkön-örökké üldözve az ekliptikán veszélyezteti a fővilágosítókat.

Az indiai asztrológia egyik legkülönlegesebb területe a bolygók elhelyezkedésének komplex értelmezése. Spirituális szempontból is kiemeltnek tekinthető ez a terület, hiszen a képlet mélyebb-magasabb dimenziói – az állócsillagos figyelembevétele mellett – ezen jóga-rendszerből tanulmányozható a legplasztikusabban.

While the Torah instructs Jews not to practice soothsaying or divination, the Talmud includes several discussions about the power of astrology with many Rabbis even arguing that the use of astrology is both permitted and meaningful. Add to this discrepancy the numerous astrological mosaics on the floors of ancient synagogues, as well as certain Kabbalistic practices, and it becomes clear why there is confusion within the Jewish community. This article examines Jewish perspectives on evolutionary astrology throughout Jewish history and its link to current mystical applications.

The Jewish Bible emerged against a backdrop of paganism and astrolatry, surrounded by the greatest civilizations of the ancient world. A millennium later, in enclaves of the Sasanian Empire of pre-Islamic Iran, a melting-pot of heterogeneous religious and ethnic communities dominated by Zoroastrian culture, the Babylonian Talmud, the culmination of generations of Rabbinic oral discussion of Torah law, was born.
Divinatory practices prevalent in the pagan cultures of Classical
Antiquity were seemingly reviled in both the Bible and the Talmud. Yet,
beneath that apparent veneer, there was evidence of an attitude towards
celestial phenomena that paralleled that of contemporaneous culture, the cognition of a relationship between the stars and the Earth that belied a wholesale rejection of astrological belief. Whilst spurning astral religion, both the Jewish Bible and the Talmud incorporated a cosmology and attitude that recognised the significance of the celestial bodies beyond the physical.
This paper seeks to analyse the nature and extent of that attitude, comparing and contrasting the Bible and the Talmud’s conception of the heavenly bodies’ significance. It will also seek to clarify the relationship of the conceptual worlds of the Tanach’s authors and classical Rabbinic Judaism [Talmudic] to astrology (and its various categories), to determine whether or not the rabbis’ theological stance vis-à-vis astrology differs substantially from that of the Bible.
