This article aims to discuss an unusual proposal for a temporary theatre built in an annex to the Royal National Theatre in London, which internally implies a participatory and contemporary scenic solution, combined with a challenging aesthetic that allows those contemplating its external volume to imagine they are before an architecture-event or even an artistic installation. Architect Haworth Tompkins´ intention, was that the ephemeral theatre would provide an alternative auditorium while the Cottesloe Theatre, nowadays the Dorfman Theatre - was closed for refurbishment works being carried out by the same architectural firm.

Neo-Gothic emerged in Croatian architecture rather late in comparison to Great Britain and the majority of countries in mainland Europe. Crucial in spreading the use of the style were the influences from the areas of present-day Germany, Austria, the Czech lands and Hungary.
The history of Croatian Neo-Gothic can be divided into three phases. The first, Romantic, phase lasted from the beginning of the 1800s to the end of the 1860s and was marked by naïve approach to the Gothic style. The second phase of the so-called High Neo-Gothic, in the 1870s and 1880s, showed a considerably greater tendency for achieving stylistic purity and drawing on High Gothic buildings.
Since the early 1890s Neo-Gothic entered its third phase characterized by frequent imitations of Late Gothic, propensity for extravagance and occasional combination with other styles, mostly the Viennese Secession.
Neo-Gothic was significant primarily for the Catholic Church which used it to distinguish its buildings from Orthodox Neo-Byzantine churches or synagogues built mostly in the Neo-Moorish style. Since Catholicism was an important part of Croatian national identity there were endeavours, though unsuccessful ones, to make (Neo-)Gothic the basis for a particular national architectural style.
Croatian architecture of the second half of the 19th century can enrich the historical context of Neo-Gothic on the European mainland with several accomplishments.
Especially interesting are Herman Bollé’s restoration of the Greek
Catholic Cathedral in Križevci in the mixed Neo-Gothic and Neo-Byzantine style and the restoration of the Zagreb Cathedral which was a radical attempt in establishing its assumed original Gothic state by removing almost all Baroque architectural elements and furniture.
Most important architects of Gothic Revival in Croatia were Viennese architect Friedrich von Schmidt and his students, Croatian architects Herman Bollé and Josip Vancaš.

Η Ενετική μονή Santa Maria dei Miracoli, στο λόφο Καστελίου στα Χανιά, υπήρξε μία από τις έξι μονές μοναχικών ταγμάτων της Δυτικής Εκκλησίας που λειτούργησαν στην πόλη.
Σήμερα σώζεται σε κακή κατάσταση, καθώς η χρόνια εγκατάλειψη, η απώλεια των στεγάσεων, η ασφυκτική γειτνίαση με νεότερα κτίσματα, οι ατυχείς επεμβάσεις και η απουσία ολοκληρωμένης μελέτης ανάδειξης, καθιστούν δυσδιάκριτο το μνημείο μέσα στον αστικό ιστό και την ιστορία του δυσανάγνωστη.
Η ανατολική πλευρά του μνημείου θεμελιώνεται πάνω στο βυζαντινό τείχος και γίνεται άμεσα αντιληπτό στον επισκέπτη από το λιμάνι. Η αποτύπωση του μνημείου σε συνδυασμό με την ενδελεχή μελέτη της ιστορίας του, διευκρίνισε τις περίπλοκες ιστορικές του φάσεις και έφερε στο φως ένα μεγαλύτερο, πολύ πιο σημαντικό μνημείο. Πρόκειται για μία τρίκλιτη βασιλική των μέσων χρόνων της Ενετοκρατίας, που στη συνέχεια αποτέλεσε τμήμα του μοναστηριακού συνόλου της Santa Maria dei Miracoli, και για την οποία δεν υπάρχει καμία αναφορά από παλαιότερους ή σύγχρονους ερευνητές.
Οι προτεινόμενες επεμβάσεις στοχεύουν στη διάκριση των επιμέρους ιστορικών φάσεων του σημαντικού μνημείου της Santa Maria dei Miracoli,  ιδιαίτερα μέσα από την αναγνώριση των χαρακτηριστικών στοιχείων στην όψη από το λιμάνι. Η αναζωοδότηση του μνημείου και η διδακτική επαναφορά του χαρακτήρα της ενετικής μονής μέσα από τον τονισμό της μοναστηριακής αυλής και της περιμετρικής κίνησης, στοχεύει στη συμπλήρωση του ιστορικού ψηφιδωτού της πόλης και στην ανάδειξη του μνημείου μέσα στο προστατευόμενο ιστορικό περιβάλλον της παλιάς πόλης Χανίων.

A reformáció Európa szerte új templombelsők születését, az egykori terek nagymértékű átalakulását idézte elő. Különösen református templomok esetében születtek olyan, a centralizáló liturgiához alkalmazkodó, téri el-rendezések, melyek igyekeztek szakítani az addigi hagyománnyal. A szokásokhoz való erős ragaszkodás, a falvakban mélyen gyökerező hierarchikus rend leképezésének igénye azonban a mai napig állandó. A legtöbb templomban találkozhatunk ezzel a jelenséggel, melyet a legtökéletesebben az ülésrend és térhasználat, a századok óta jelen lévő és formálódó szabályok rendszere juttat kifejezésre. Református templomainkban érzékelhető a kettősség, a protestantizmus újító szellemének és egyféle archaikus társadalmi rend - vagyoni, nemek szerinti és társadalmi státusznál fogva történő elkülönülés - egyidejű megjelenítésének vágya. Székelyföld egy kis szegletében, az egykori Sepsiszék területén - 32 templomépület tanulságait összegezve -, elemezzük a templomi ülőhelyek és a templomi térhasználat rendszerét, figyelembe véve a terület sajátosságait, de egyben tágabb értelmezési lehetőségeknek is teret engedni.

The actual value of the city of Utica, New York is based on what represents it for the development of the Empire State, given its strategic location.  With time it got the importance that gave physical form to its splendor, leaving an architectural diversity worthy of being preserved.

Having existed since the old times, the concepts of crime and punishment have varied according to the value judgments and legal rules of societies throughout history. These changes gained much speed with the developments that occurred in the 18th-19th century. The Tanzimat Period, the Reform Era, for the Ottoman Empire (1839-1876) is considered as the turning point of social change and transformation. In this period, many political, military, administrative, judicial and economic developments took place and due to these, a number of legal regulations were made. Most of these regulations were realized by adopting the European practices to the Ottoman.
One of these historical regulations which directly concerns this study is the changes in the field of criminal law. Some mentions in the Edicts of Tanzimat and and Islahat were the first signs that the criminal law would change. By employing and adopting, in general the European Criminal code, in particular the French one, changes in the definition, type and sentence of the crime occurred and accordingly, it was foreseen that many criminal acts were to be punished by imprisonment.
The changes in the criminal code brought new necessities indirectly; accordingly, the construction of prison buildings where prisoners sentenced to imprisonment was required. The prison building, built for a single purpose, was in this sense a new type of building in the Ottoman Empire and the prisons were built in different types and styles from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
It is determined that also Architect Kemaleddin Bey prepared some prison designs in this period. He prepared three different types of prison projects based on capacity, the first being 75-100, the second being 130-300, and the third being 300-450 persons. In this study, the prison projects prepared by Kemâleddin Bey are discussed in terms of their architectural features.

Öteden beri var olan suç ve ceza kavramları toplumların değer yargıları ve hukuk kurallarına bağlı olarak tarihi süreç içerisinde değişiklik göstermektedir. Bu değişiklikler, 18-19. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan gelişmelerle çok daha hız kazanmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti için Tanzimat Dönemi (1839-1876) toplumsal değişim ve dönüşümün dönüm noktası sayılmaktadır. Bu dönemde, siyasi, askeri, idari, adli, ekonomik birçok gelişme yaşanmıştır. Bu gelişmelere bağlı olarak da çok sayıda kanuni düzenleme yapılmıştır. Düzenlemelerin bir çoğu Avrupa’daki uygulamaların Osmanlı’ya uyarlanması şeklinde gerçekleştirilmiştir.
Çalışma konusunu doğrudan ilgilendiren tarihi düzenlemelerden biri de ceza hukuku alanında meydana gelen değişikliklerdir. Tanzimat ve Islahat fermanlarındaki ifadeler, ceza yasalarının değişeceğine dair ilk belirtilerdir. Genelde Avrupa, özelde Fransız Ceza Kanunu’nun benimsenerek uyarlanmasıyla suçun tanımı, türü ve cezasında değişiklikler meydana gelmiştir. Buna göre bir çok suç fiilinin hapisle cezalandırılması öngörülmüştür.
Ceza kanunlarındaki değişiklikler, dolaylı olarak yeni ihtiyaçları da beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu doğrultuda hapse mahkûm edilenlerin cezalarını çekecekleri hapishane binalarının inşasına gerek duyulmuştur. Osmanlı Devleti’nde bağımsız tek bir amaca yönelik olarak inşa edilen hapishane binası, bu anlamda yeni bir yapı türüdür. Hapishaneler, 19. yüzyılın ortalarından 20. yüzyılın başlarına kadar farklı tip ve üsluplarda inşa edilmiştir. 20. yüzyılın başlarında, yeni inşa edilecek hapishanelerin belirli esaslar çerçevesinde yapılmasına gerek görülmüştür.
Bu dönemde Mimar Kemâleddin Bey’in de hapishane tasarımı hazırladığı tespit edilmiştir. Kemâleddin Bey, ilki 75-100, ikincisi 130-300, üçüncüsü ise 300-450 kişilik olmak üzere kapasiteyi esas alan üç farklı tipte hapishane projesi hazırlamıştır. Bu çalışmada, Kemâleddin Bey tarafından hazırlanmış hapishane projeleri, mimari özellikleri bakımından ele alınmıştır.

Esta tese se propõe a apresentar uma reconstituição da casa do Rio de Janeiro, no período entre 1776 e 1850. Na ausência de exemplares arquitetônicos remanescentes deste período e de documentação em linguagem gráfica, recorremos às avaliações de imóveis
encontradas em inventários post- mortem  do acervo do Arquivo Nacional do Rio de Janeiro.
A análise foi conduzida a partir do tratamento estatístico de dados dimensionais dos lotes e edifícios, e da interpretação de sua divisão interna e fachadas. Os conceitos de tipo e de tipologia histórica foram o ponto de partida para o estabelecimento de uma metodologia
que permitisse interpretar edifícios a partir de descrições textuais.
Além de dados numéricos, o material coletado forneceu informações sobre materiais e técnicas construtivas, usos, setorização e programas. Estes últimos apresentaram enorme variedade, em discordância com a imagem geral de uniformidade da casa brasileira preconizada pela literatura especializada.
Ao longo desta pesquisa, uma nova imagem da casa carioca no final do período
colonial foi sendo formada. Distante dos grandes edifícios acadêmicos, que até então vêm sendo objeto dos estudos de Arquitetura brasileira, a casa que compunha a maior parte do tecido urbano e destinava- se a abrigar a grande massa da população sem acesso aos bens
imóveis tomou forma e dimensão.

A 7 de agosto de 1825, morre a senhora Maria Thomásia de Oliveira Gonçalves, mãe de filhos menores, cujo inventário foi conduzido pelo viúvo. Ela era filha do comendador Tomás Gonçalves, “professo na Ordem Militar de Cristo e negociante desta praça”, considerado uma das maiores fortunas da corte, detentor de várias propriedades na cidade, inclusive na rua das Marrecas, falecido em 1817, e de D. Maria Angélica de Oliveira Gonçalves, que deu continuidades aos negócios como Viúva Gonçalves e filho.  Seu marido era o tenente general José de Oliveira Barbosa, antigo Governador e Capitão-General de Angola, de 1810 a 1815, e que tivera atuação destacada nos primeiros momentos da Independência quando, entre 10 e 14 de novembro de 1823, como Ministro da Guerra, referendou o decreto que dissolveu a Assembleia Constituinte. Comendador da Imperial Ordem de Avis em 1813, ele receberia o título de Barão do Passeio Público, em 24 de outubro de 1829 e, finalmente, o de Visconde do Rio Comprido, em 18 de julho de 1841.
O casal morava em um amplo sobrado, situado na aprazível rua do Passeio, esquina com a rua das Marrecas, que havia sido reformado sob a orientação de Grandjean de Montigny, quando foi erguido um inovador hemiciclo.
A comunicação pretende comentar os itens que integram o inventário, na perspectiva da análise do estilo de vida das famílias em ascensão, o “tratar-se à lei da nobreza”, em meio à transição do Antigo Regime para o da consolidação de uma nação autônoma, momento de construção de uma nova ordem política e social trazida pelo constitucionalismo e a Independência.
O documento descreve as casas urbanas − o sobrado da rua do Passeio e outras casas da rua das Marrecas, e casas de chácara no Catumbi, com variado arvoredo, com mangueiras, parreiras, laranjeiras, limoeiros, pessegueiros, etc., 33 escravos que atendem as propriedades, identificados pelo nome, idade e habilidades para lidas rurais ou domésticas; as mulas, vacas e bois.
Quanto aos objetos de luxo e de uso cotidiano, são mencionados 39 itens de ourivesaria, entre colares, brincos, pulseiras, etc, muito deles cravejados de brilhantes; 37 itens de peças em prata, em talheres, bandejas, copos e bacias; um piano; quatro relógio, um de ouro, outro de prata e dois de sala, estilo francês e inglês; sete itens de transporte, com uma rica carruagem, seges e serpentinas; cerca de 50 peças de mobiliário em madeira, entre mesas, camas, e cadeiras,  algumas estofadas, outras com palhinha; um conjunto de itens de maior valor, como tocadores franceses, quadros, espelhos de salão e castiçais.
O casal dispunha de biblioteca com cerca de 50 títulos, entre romances, dicionários, livros científicos e sobre técnicas militares; e a senhora possuía vestidos de seda e cetim, como roupa de cama e mesa, além de rendas e outros ornamentos.

Essa informação confirma a atribuição feita no Diário Fluminense no. 10 (12.jan.1828), em meio a polêmica que opôs profissionais luso-brasileiros e franceses, quanto a atuação e competências profissionais e artísticas. De acordo com o articulista anônimo, Grandjean havia sido requisitado pela sociedade da Corte, e teria sido “arquiteto das casas do excelentíssimo José de Oliveira Barbosa e do Senhor Luiz de Souza Dias”.
O inventário apresenta inéditas e detalhadas descrições das casas da família, hoje desaparecidas, na rua do Passeio, conhecida por seu hemiciclo, e em chácara no Catumbi, o que permite seu confronto com outras fontes textuais, iconográficas e cartográficas que as contemplam, como desenhos e comentários de Debret. A intervenção arquitetônica de Grandjean sobre um edifício tradicional da cidade permite discutir influências, mudanças e permanências decorrentes da abertura do mercado carioca a profissionais estrangeiros.

(From the cover) Se è vero che da puro nutrimento il cibo si è presto trasformato in complessa e raffinata operazione che convoca gusti e intelligenze per assurgere allo status d’imprescindibile «linguaggio», il luogo domestico a esso dedicato, in adesione al codice culturale percepito come egemone, viene a rivestire un ruolo di non comune interesse. Dalla scoperta del fuoco in epoca preistorica fino alle modernissime realizzazioni della tecnologia e della domotica, queste pagine ne seguono l’evoluzione privilegiando lo studio dell’architettura e del design su scala europea e nordamericana e verificandolo nella lunga durata, negli studi sociologici, antropologici e di genere, nei riflessi letterari e cinematografici, nello sviluppo sorprendente del gusto e dei suoi artefici attraverso i secoli. * «Prendendo in considerazione la cucina dell’abitazione quale luogo in cui si materializza l‘éloge du quotidien – dal titolo del noto testo di Tzvetan Todorov -, il libro non indaga la cucina di tutti gli esseri umani né solo quella di pochi eletti, ma cerca di tracciare una storia del suo progetto in area occidentale, raccontandone i momenti apicali come le invarianti nel corso dei secoli. Organizzata cronologicamente e per paradigmi culturali, la struttura narrativa connette contributi provenienti dall’architettura, dal design e dalle arti visive a quelli derivati dalla storia sociale e del pensiero manageriale, dalla storia dell’alimentazione e dalla letteratura gastronomica, per delineare immagini e stereotipi culturali della “mentalità di un’epoca” ovvero i suoi costumi sociali, economici, alimentari. Ciascuna rappresenta un’affascinante microstoria: giustapposta o cucita alle altre, simboleggia il piú ampio racconto antropico, in cui siamo emotivamente quanto culturalmente coinvolti».

The focus of this study in the history of architecture and built environment is the Stockholm City Hall and its practical functions and symbolic programme. The study also centres on the City Hall’s inauguration festival on the Midsummer’s Eve in 1923 as a manifestation of the building’s functions and symbols at the intersection of ancient times and current times as well as of the Swedish capital Stockholm and the Kingdom of Sweden. In the City Hall, the practical function of the building coincided with some of the theoretical ideals of society at the turn of the century. In this building, which was erected for the Stockholm City Council as well as for its administration and entertainment, socio-political and socio-aesthetic ideas met. In the creative act of the architect Ragnar Östberg, the consensus politics and the aesthetic milieu taken as a whole became an indivisible unity and a programmatic part. As a result, the Stockholm City Hall was shaped into a symbol of the ancient town and its rulers, but also into a manifestation of contemporary society and its new-born democracy.

These aspects of the building are essential in the present Master’s thesis: ‘Stockholm City Hall. Ancient times and current times’. The main aim is to describe the process before and under the construction and, when completed, to analyse the building in relation to the cultural-historical context in answering such questions as: Why was the Stockholm City Hall built? Why did the Stockholm City Hall get specifically this form? In the chapter ‘Society’, 50 years of committees, political regulations and resolutions are introduced – all in relation to the Stockholm Law Courts and the Stockholm City Hall. In the chapter entitled ‘The architect’, Ragnar Östberg (1866–1945) is introduced. The chapter deals with his progress as a student, with his scholarship travels in Sweden, USA and Europe, and with his period in assisting the architect Isak Gustaf Clason with the designs for the Nordic Museum in Stockholm (opened in 1907). In the chapter ‘The building’, the competition entries for the Stockholm Law Court and, when changing over around 1908, the Stockholm City Hall are presented, as well as the final fabric by Östberg. The ideas in contemporary society and impressions of the architect are discussed as sources of inspiration, which are reflected in the building: the Stockholm City Hall.

During the last years, this Master’s thesis in the History of Architecture and Built Environment has, for instance, been quoted in an extensive monograph in Art History about the Stockholm City Hall (published in 2011). Most recently, it has been referred to in a PhD thesis in Architecture at the University of Bologna, Italy, about the architect Ragnar Östberg (published in 2015).

The place of passions. The Odeon theatre of Herodes Atticus

The ancient Odeon theatre of Herodes Atticus is one of the must see attractions in Athens and considered one of the best open air theatres in the world.
The concert of the “Roads of Friendship” will be performed here on July 9th. Maestro Muti will conduct Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 for choir and orchestra.
Very much celebrated by ancient Greek and Latin authors, the theatre was also decribed by Hans Peter Isler: it is built with local limestone. The semicircular cavea is mostly carved in the rock of the acropolis, the wings are built. The interior is divided in tue maeniana, the one below has nine- teen steps, the upper one fifteen. The floor of the orchestra is not origi- nal. The Scaenae frons, with three doors, had eighteen columns, which have gone lost. Above them there were big arched windows that partial- ly still exist. In the wings of the building there are large ladders reaching the upper part of the cavea.
According to Philostratus it was covered by a wooden roof, but the pres- ence of a system to drain rainy waters may indicate that the roof only par- tially covered the building.
It could contain up to six thousand people.
This theatre is considered a sort of a gift the rich Herodes Atticus gave to his friends, the whole town and the whole world.
In particular it will be a gift also for those lucky people who will be able to take part to Riccardo Muti’s concert, as it is going to be a unique expe- rience of art and beauty.
