History of Amazonian Region

This research project is a subproject of PROCAD 88881.200541 / 2018-01 "Religious imaginary in the eastern Amazon" valid from October 2018 to September 2023. Its guiding questions are: (1) What kind of religious imagery "evangelicals" [in Brasil "evangélicos is a term which includes Protestants, Pentecostals and Ne-Petencostals] propagated and prpagate in the eastern Amazon? (2) How “evangelicals" have described and do describe the religious imaginary found by them in the eastern Amazon? (3) Were and are there examples of interaction, hybridization, transculturation, colonial semiosis or artistic mestísage and continuous translations (cf. Alessandra Russo, The untranslatable image, 2014, p. 2 and 6) between Amazonian and evangelical religious imaginary, expressed by textual, spatial and visual narratives of different imaginary? The research hypothesis is that in the territory of the eastern Amazon, despite so many conflicts that have occurred and still occur, there have been and continue to be dynamics of translations, interactions, hybridizations and transculturation between different religious imaginary, creating, continuously, a type of religious imaginary matrix that, in turn, they have an impact on particular religious imaginary. This hypothesis is in line with the observation in the mother project while it refers to a “[Amazonian] spirituality of the Cabocla pajelança, [d] popular ecumenism, [d] the orixás worship and [d] the missions and immigration evangelisms [that ] intertwined [and are intertwining] in a cultural melting pot ”observing,“ [n] the more specific context of the Pará region [...] intense and continuous transits and religious creations ”.

As our first step we shall investigate the church jornal “O Apólogo Christão Brazileiro” [The Brazilian Christian Advocate], which contains the first continuous and public evangelical narratives from and in the eastern Amazon. The newspaper was published during 20 years between 1890 and 1910, on weekly base between 1890 and July 1891, fortnightly from August 1891 to January 1892 and, monthly, from January 1892 to September 1910. Its narrative introduces us to the original and proper tone of a pioneer evangelical presence. Other specific researches will be added during the project, in the horizon of honoring Amazonian perspectives, always trying to establish dialogues with projects of the respective student bodies (dissertations and theses) and professors (research projects) of the partner institutions.

The objective is to contribute to a more differentiated perception of encounters, disagreements, dialogues, etc., among the religious imaginary present in the eastern Amazon under the focus of the involvement of the evangelical religious imaginary. The proposal is justified and distinguished from others by the fact that many researches, until now, were developed in perspectives that intended to contribute more to the establishment of hierarchies between religions - including the (un)qualifications of social groups by referring to syncretism, extinction , resistance, subordination, etc. The proposal does not  intend to deny or to make invisible the enormous social impact of the (dis)encounters that have occurred, but, it suggests that there were and are, at the same time, cultural dynamics in which the meetings of the different religious imaginary in the eastern Amazon resulted in something third, a phenomenon that it is adequately described if not explained by processes of interaction, hybridization, transculturation, colonial semiosis or artistic mestísage and continuous translations. As a method we propose to analyse textual and visual “evangelical” narratives in search of evidence.

A presente Monografia se propõe a analisar qual é o lugar da tradição e da modernidade no discurso contido nas publicações veiculadas pelo Synopsis Ecclesiastica (1848-1849), o primeiro jornal católico da diocese do Pará, assim como a relação desse discurso com o bispo D. José Afonso de Moraes Torres (1844-1857), que se destaca por ter iniciado a reforma ultramontana na dita diocese. O discurso do Synopsis comporta uma concepção ambivalente de sociedade, formada por elementos tradição e da  Modernidade, se situando entre a tradição e a modernidade. Se por um lado, a afirmação da devoção, a defesa da união entre Trono e Altar, do princípio tomista da prevalência da fé sobre a razão, da revelação sobre a liberdade de pensamento, indicam sua
ancoragem na tradição, por outro lado, a aceitação do progresso tecnológico, a promoção do dogma da Imaculada Conceição como forma de controle sobre a devoção popular e, principalmente, a instrumentalização da imprensa como meio de afirmar a própria tradição, mostram como a concepção católica-conservadora de sociedade não estava imune as ingerências da modernidade.

Os textos que compõem esse dossiê foram gerados em grupos de pesquisa e programas de pós-graduação que têm, sistematicamente, se dedicado à historiografia da Amazônia. Os cinco artigos formam dois conjuntos bastante homogêneos na temática e temporalidade: o primeiro se dedica a um momento preciso da história da Amazônia, o final da década de 1750 e início da década seguinte, anos imediatamente posteriores à promulgação das primeiras leis reformadoras de Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, ministro de D. José
I, as quais, formuladas no além-mar, teriam um profundo impacto na região; no segundo conjunto, a palavra-chave é ‘desenvolvimento’, tal como entendido no final dos anos 1930 e início dos 1940, já no Estado Novo de Getúlio Vargas.

Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial Alan Fisher produziu imagens com o objetivo de divulgar o trabalho do recém-criado Serviço Especial de Saúde Pública (Sesp). O fotógrafo era contratado do Office of Inter-American Affairs, agência criada para di-namizar a chamada política da boa vizinhança. Mais que a captura de paisagens amazônicas, as fotografias de Alan Fisher pretendiam retratar uma Amazônia moderna, na qual ciência e saúde -possibilitadas pela atuação dos médicos do Sesp- seriam os elementos fundamentais para superar a condição periférica em que a região se encontrava. Fisher também foi correspondente de guerra, cobrindo a atuação da Força Expedicionária Brasileira na Itália, e percorreu o interior do país colaborando com a exibição de filmes educativos que pretendiam ensinar melhores hábitos sanitários às populações.

In 1955, the SPVEA launched the Primeiro Plano Quin-quenal in response to growing international interest in Amazonia's resources and internal pressure to address the region's chronic underde-velopment. The Plano was the largest modernization plan attempted in Amazonia until then. It aimed at transforming the region's rich ecosystem into the driving force of Brazil's development as well as a major raw material provider for global markets. The article examines this neglected episode of Brazilian developmentalism as an important experience preparing the entrance of Brazil in the so-called Great Acceleration. The Plano established a rational method and constructed a technoscientific infrastructure that did not just organize the modernization of the region as a whole but formed an Anthropocene culture in Amazonia. Via their planned approach to the modernization of Amazonia, the SPVEA planners introduced new representations, demands, and expectations of the

First of all, the article aims to demonstrate how the discourse of the internationalization of the Amazon was displayed at different times of the Brazilian history until the 1970s. Then, the text will focus on a controversy concerning this internationalization issue at the beginning of the Brazilian military regime. An edition of the Revista Brasileira de Política Internacional (RBPI) of 1968 will be used as the main source for the analysis. This edition of the Revista was particularly focused on the case of the Amazon basin, approaching the suggested projects for the region from different points of view. The project which will be in focus in the paper is the "Great Lakes", which suggested the construction of a network of waterways in the region in order to facilitate intra- and extra-regional trade. Through the analysis of positions and issues exposed in this edition of RBPI about the “Great Lakes” project, this paper intends to discuss the issue of the internationalization of the Amazon basin at the time portrayed in the RBPI publication.

The relations between territory, religion and geopolitics seem to assume a central role in the contemporary world. I try to contribute to debate here, from a survey in Belém of Pará on the territory and the identity of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons. Instrumentalized by semi-structured interviews, field observation, research of official documents of religion trought an existential phenomenological interpretation, I conclude that: there is a geopolitical war in evidence nowadays; territorial Mormons follow a metropolitan spatial pattern; the identity of Mormon remount its geohistory in fruitful and tense negotiation with new cultural groups in seeking territorial expansion; the expansion of the territory demands a insurmountable relationship between domain and ownership, to sustain the tense unity of the group.

El artículo aborda la fotografía hecha por los misioneros católicos en la región del Alto Río Negro-Vaupés. El texto ofrece un breve inventario de las imágenes y sus temáticas y analiza las fotografías haciendo una confrontación entre las imágenes y los textos que las acompañan en publicaciones como la prensa, libros y revistas en Colombia y Brasil. La ausencia de otros actores regionales como los caucheros blancos hace de esta fuente un material limitado para la comprensión de los procesos históricos regionales, pues transmite la idea de que las misiones son parte de un mundo aislado. Así mismo la baja aparición de religiosas y las imágenes en la frontera revelan el androcentrismo misionero y el énfasis en su papel de impulsor de valores en las fronteras nacionales. Abstract: The article discusses the photographs made by Catholic missionaries in the Alto Río Negro-Vaupés region. The text offers a brief inventory of the images and their themes and analyzes the photographs by making a confrontation between the images and the texts that accompany them in publications such as the press, books and magazines in Colombia and Brazil. The absence of other regional actors such as white rubber workers conveys the idea that the missions are part of an isolated world and makes this source a limited material for the understanding of regional historical processes. Likewise, the low appearance of female religious and images on the border reveal missionary androcentrism and the emphasis on its role as a driver of values on the national borders.

The writing of the Relatório sobre as condições médico-sanitárias do vale do Amazonas (Report on the medical and sanitary conditions in the Amazon Valley) is analyzed from the perspective of the macro- and micropolitical implications of the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz’s expedition to the departments in the federal territory of Acre. The analysis focuses on the interactions between Carlos Chagas, Pacheco Leão, and João Pedroso and judges, doctors, and rubber barons from the Yaco and Caeté rivers at the town of Sena Madureira, capital of Alto Purus, in January 1913. The scientific report was also influenced by the contact the commission members had with the major players in the rubber industry and their resulting immersion in local and regional political conflicts.

Resumen: En este artículo se presenta un estado de la cuestión de la arqueología amazónica. Este cam-po de investigación relativamente nuevo intenta comprender una zona enorme que abarca el bosque húmedo tropical y el rio más grandes del mundo, por lo que la tarea es un desafío constante. Aparte de los pioneros de principios del siglo XX, la arqueología amazónica gira entorno a los enfoques opuestos y por ello fecundos de Betty J. Meggers y Donald W. Lathrap, que desembocan sobre todo desde los años setenta en adelante en una serie de investigaciones con las que, junto con comprender con más hallaz-gos el origen, la antigüedad, y la dispersión del hombre y la mujer amazónicos, se intenta responder a la cuestión de hasta qué punto las sociedades y culturas indígenas amazónicas son iguales a las de antes de la conquista europea. Este debate tiene dos líneas relacionadas: (i) la población que puede sostener el medio amazónico; y (ii) el nivel de complejidad de las sociedades de la zona. Con los nuevos datos apa-recen interrogantes clave como los cambios en el patrón de asentamiento y el incremento de conflictos y guerras en los albores de nuestra Era.

Abstract: In this paper a short assessment of the Amazonian archaeology is presented. This relatively new field of research attempts to understand a huge area covering both the largest rainforest and river in the world, so the task is a constant challenge. Aside from the pioneers of the early twentieth century, Amazonian archaeology revolves around the opposite approaches of Betty J. Meggers and Donald W. Lathrap. With new findings, this debate continues from the seventies onwards trying to better understand the origin, antiquity, and dispersion of Amazonian men and women, in addition of trying to answer the question whether Amazonian indigenous societies and cultures are equal or not to those before the European conquest. This debate has two related lines: (i) the population Amazonian environment can sustain; and (ii) the level of complexity of societies in the area. New data rise key questions such as changes in the settlement pattern and increased conflicts and wars in the beginning of our Era.

RESUMO
O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a política linguística da Companhia de Jesus e do governo português para o Estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão e relacioná-la ao processo de produção de três dicionários em Língua Geral redigidos por jesuítas originários da Europa Central que atuaram na região amazônica no contexto das reformas pombalinas na década de 1750. Primeiramente, buscou-se compreender as diretrizes da Companhia de Jesus para a escolha e padronização de uma língua indígena no Brasil para a catequização dos índios, bem como o posicionamento dos jesuítas e do Estado português em relação à Língua Geral na Amazônia. Em seguida, foi reconstituída a trajetória de um grupo de jesuítas centro-europeus na Amazônia lusa em meados do século XVIII, cujos membros, muito provavelmente, redigiram três dicionários em Língua Geral. Por fim, utilizando o conceito de mediação cultural, os dicionários são compreendidos como produtos de um processo de negociação de sentidos, constituindo-se tanto como textos de tradução e classificação, como instrumentos de aprendizado da Língua Geral. Fora o aspecto meramente técnico ou prático, os vocabulários são analisados enquanto textos continuamente atualizados pelos autores jesuítas a partir de suas experiências adquiridas no complexo convívio com os índios no interior das missões.

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the linguistic policy of the Society of Jesus and the Portuguese government for the State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão and to relate it to the production process of three dictionaries in “General Language” written by Jesuits of Central European origin who worked in the Amazon Region in the context of the Pombal reforms in the 1750s. Firstly, it  sought  to  understand the  guidelines  of Society of Jesus  for  a  choice  and standardization  of  an  Indian  language  in  Brazil  for  the  catechization of  the  indians  and  positioning  of  the  jesuits and  Portuguese  State in  relation  to  “General Language”  in  Amazonia. Secondly, it was reconstituted the trajectory of a group of european center jesuits  in  Portuguese  Amazonia in  the  mid  eighteenth  century,whose  members  probably  wrote  three  dictionaries  in  “General  Language”. Finally, using the concept of cultural mediation, the dictionaries are understood as products of a process of negotiation of meanings, constituting both translation and classification texts, as well as instruments for learning the “General Language”. Apart from the merely technical or practical aspect, the vocabularies are analyzed as texts continuously updated by the Jesuit authors based on their experiences acquired in the complex living together with the Indians inside the missions.

No contexto da introdução das reformas concebidas pelo secretário régio Sebastião José de Carvalho e Mello, o futuro Marquês de Pombal, no Estado do Grão-Pará e Maranhão, um pequeno grupo de jesuítas de origem alemã estava atuando na região. Trata-se dos padres Antônio Meisterburg, Lourenço Kaulen e Anselmo Eckart, todos originários da Renânia no oeste da Alemanha. Tudo indica que sua vinda à Amazônia portuguesa, entre os anos de 1750 e 1753, deve-se à iniciativa do padre Roque Hundertpfund, então procurador da Missão do Maranhão em Lisboa, e da rainha-mãe Dona Maria Ana de origem austríaca e conhecida por sua simpatia pela Companhia de Jesus. Os três padres “tapuitinga” – designação indígena para os religiosos de proveniência alemã ou centro-europeia – desenvolveram a maior parte de suas atividades missionárias em aldeamentos no vale dos rios Madeira e Xingu. Nestes lugares, Eckart e Meisterburg, mas com muita probabilidade também Kaulen, dedicaram-se à redação de dicionários da Língua Geral. Esses trabalhos linguísticos, embora realizados por missionários ainda relativamente inexperientes, não reproduzem meramente, como outros dicionários da época colonial no Brasil, a forma estandardizada do idioma estabelecida no século XVI, mas atentam claramente ao uso coloquial do mesmo no vale amazônico em meados do setecentos. Assim, os padres alemães contribuíram para dar continuidade aos esforços dos inacianos de promover sistematicamente a Língua Geral como meio de comunicação na sua vasta rede de aldeamentos no Grão-Pará e Maranhão, apesar dos receios da metrópole determinada a difundir a língua portuguesa. Enquanto o dicionário redigido por Eckart, o Vocabulario da LinguaBrazil, já foi objeto de muitas pesquisas, um manuscrito anônimo de 1756, descoberto em 2012 na biblioteca municipal da cidade de Trier na Alemanha, constitui ainda um desafio para linguistas e historiadores. Convencionalmente, a obra foi denominada de Dicionário de Trier ou Dicionário de 1756. Há indícios no texto de que o lugar da redação foi a pequena Missão de Piraguiri, conhecida por suas atividades pesqueira e artesanal (produção de canoas), sendo o padre Meisterburg e, eventualmente, o seu confrade Kaulen, o autor ou os autores mais prováveis. Não só as anotações feitas às margens e entre as linhas do vocabulário, mas também as informações contidas em uma carta-ânua, redigida, no mesmo ano, pelo padre Kaulen na referida missão, permitem entender melhor a situação cotidiana em um aldeamento na calha amazônica no período pombalino. De maneira mais ampla, os três missionários alemães merecem, para além de seu óbvio interesse pela(s) língua(s) indígenas usadas no interior das missões, a atenção dos historiadores pelo fato de estarem entre os primeiros jesuítas a serem presos e deportados. Como seu mentor, padre Roque Hundertpfund, e seus confrades portugueses José Antônio, Teodoro da Cruz, Manuel Ribeiro e Aleixo Antônio em 1755, os três padres renanos foram presos, pouco tempo depois, e deportados para o reino, isto é, ainda antes da expulsão geral e definitiva da Companhia por ordem do Marquês de Pombal. Assim, partindo da origem estrangeira e do intenso interesse pela Língua Geral, visa-se nesta comunicação entender as razões pelo exílio e o encarceramento prolongado dos três “tapuitinga” que, afinal, viveram somente entre seis a três anos na Amazônia. Para este fim, se levará em conta o conceito do protonacionalismo, trabalhado por Eric Hobsbawm, enquanto marcador do projeto reformador do Marquês de Pombal.

Resumo: Este artigo tem como objetivo entender como um dicionário, escrito por um jesuíta alemão no século XVIII, foi utilizado como instrumento de aprendizado da língua geral na Amazônia. O documento analisado é entendido como parte da política linguística jesuítica, a partir da qual o aprendizado de línguas era de fundamental importância para a ação missionária. O conceito de mediação cultural será apropriado, pois o dicionário é interpretado como um instrumento linguístico essencial para o missionário, como mediador, aprender o idioma indígena e realizar seu trabalho de conversão. Primeiramente, buscou-se delinear, em linhas gerais, como se formou a política jesuítica de línguas na América portuguesa. Em seguida, foi realizada uma contextualização histórica do manuscrito. Por fim, foram analisados indícios encontrados nos verbetes que elucidam o processo de confecção do dicionário, a trajetória missionária do autor e seu aprendizado da língua geral.
Abstract: The aim of this article is to understand how a dictionary, written by a German Jesuit in the eighteenth century, was used as a tool for learning the " língua geral " in the Amazon region. The analyzed document is understood as a part of Jesuit linguistic politics, in which the learning of languages was of fundamental importance for missionary activity. The concept of cultural mediation will be discussed because the dictionary is interpreted as an essential linguistic tool for the missionary, as a mediator, to aid his conversion work. Firstly, this article intends to give a general outline of Jesuit linguistic politics in Portuguese America. Secondly, the manuscript is placed in its historical context. Finally, indications found in the entries that clarify the process of dictionary making, the missionary trajectory of the author, and his learning of the Língua Geral are analyzed.
