"It is in this context that a couple of recently published books that focus on the Malabar region in the Indian Ocean littoral shall be located. They are Sebastian R Prange’s monograph, Monsoon Islam: Trade and Faith on the Medieval Malabar Coast (2018) and a collection of translations, Malabar in the Indian Ocean: Cosmo­politanism in a Maritime Historical Region (henceforth Malabar in the Indian Ocean [MII] 2018), a jointly edited volume by Mahmood Kooria and Michael Naylor Pearson. These works not only revisit some of the older arguments in the light of new archival findings, but also bring out certain fresh materials before historians for their further perusal. While Prange’s primary focus is on the pre-British Malabar from the 12th to the 16th century, some chapters in MII bring out some fresh research materials, despite the fact that a good number of them overlap with the existing works of the same contributors who already published slightly altered/shortened/enlarged version of their works elsewhere (Kooria and Pearson 2018: 1–63; 76–120; 307–37; 338–54)."

By endorsing a performative interpretation of the Fourth Part of the Introduction of the Symbol of the Faith of Friar Luis de Granada I will argue that, beyond the appearances of an anti-Jewish tract (written after the long-lasting tradition of Adversus Iudaeos), lay a catechism written in favor of the Conversos. After studying some of the motifs in the book (e.g. «Jewish blindness», «Christian charity» and the couple «honor and dishonor») and revealing its Paulinian penchants, I will show that the book was conceived as a political and spiritual manifesto on behalf of Converso integration.

The process of palaeography is far more complex and time-consuming than the process of translation, as it requires additional intuition, instruction, involvement and intelligence in order to find the right words, rather than a simple substitution of words. This is one of the reasons why the writing system and language of the Ischia Manuscript took a while to fathom, as the document is unique in the complexity of its palaeographic requirements. This naturally perplexes those who expect or desire effortless translation, but logic dictates that all simple and easy possibilities must already have been eliminated by the experiments of many others over the decades. This paper provides instruction to elucidate and educate the novice about the palaeographic process needed for success with reading the Ischia manuscript.

Since the colonial expansion of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, many typologically different languages have come into contact with Spanish and Portuguese in a wide range of geographical, historical and sociocultural settings. This special issue brings together various contributions that focus on such postcolonial contact situations and their linguistic outcomes outside of Europe.1 A variety of different linguistic aspects of these language contact situations are studied empirically in this volume. These include particular case studies of contact-induced change at different language levels, including the syntax and intonation system, (i) in Spanish and Portuguese varieties spoken outside Europe (e.g. in the Americas, Africa, Asia), (ii) in indigenous languages with which these Ibero-Romance languages have come into contact, and (iii) in Spanish- and Portuguese-lexified creoles. Apart from providing novel empirical data, this thematic volume also offers theoretical insights as several issues surrounding language contact are addressed, such as the formal constraints on borrowability and grammaticalization. The volume comprises, apart from this introduction, which offers a preliminary overview, five articles that reflect contact situations with Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas (Anthony Grant; Melanie Uth and Rodrigo Gutiérrez-Bravo; Rita Gonçalves), in Africa (Rita Gonçalves; Anna Jon-And, Juanito Ornelas de Avelar and Laura Álvarez López), and in Asia (Eeva Sippola and Marivic Lesho).

The PSR has opened a general call for research papers for the period 2021-2022 (post-COVID-19). Thematic orientation is unrestricted, but we are also open to proposals for special Focus Issues or Edited Volumes, in which the proposing scholar or entity functions as a panel organizer and also as Guest Editor or outside editor.

This paper focuses on the uses and forms of the relative pronouns as evidenced from the Latin epigraphy in Lusitania. Inscriptions are considered from the 1st to the 8th century AD, with special attention being paid to the future developments in the Portuguese language. To this purpose, other inscriptions or documents of a different nature dated to later chronologies are also considered as a point of comparison.

Através da análise da atuação dos juízes almotacés nas cidades Ibéricas pretendemos demonstrar que alguns preceitos migraram dos dogmas religiosos da Igreja Católica para a teoria política municipal posta em prática nas cidades de Portugal e Espanha durante a Idade Média. Para tanto, analisaremos a linha de filiação do ofício, que sofreu influências gregas, romanas e ainda esteve vinculado às mais básicas necessidades locais, até alcançarem à Modernidade e chegarem, com grande fôlego, aos domínios ultramarinos desses reinos.

Our friend, colleague, and teacher António Manuel Hespanha, Portugal's foremost historian of law and administration and a major influence on the reconceptualization of Brazilian colonial history and of the history of the Portuguese empire in general, passed away on July 1, 2019, after a long struggle with colon cancer. Renowned not only for the volume and quality of his publications but also for his personal kindness and generosity to students and colleagues, his scholarship greatly influenced the post–António de Oliveira Salazar generation of historians in his own country as well as the broader scholarly communities of Europe and Brazil. His work should be of interest to anyone interested in government, law, and society in the ancien régime, and especially to those interested in the Lusophone and Hispanic monarchies and their empires.
