Martin Heidegger fue el filósofo extranjero de más impacto en el campo filosófico español de los años treinta, y el propio Ortega y Gasset se medía con las ideas que el alemán había expuesto en su obra fundamental, Ser y tiempo (1927). En ese contexto, empezó a ser importado por filósofos e intelectuales vinculados a la conspiración anti-republicana y una vez en marcha la Guerra Civil, buena parte de su jerga fue utilizada por jóvenes intelectuales de Falange en sus órganos de prensa, entre los que destacó Pedro Laín Entralgo. Pero también será usado por parte de la extrema derecha monárquica, y especialmente el filósofo José Pemartín se servirá de su concepción del tiempo para hacer de la vida cristiana, defendida por las armas, única forma auténtica de existencia. La presente investigación reconstruirá el contexto de lucha simbólica e intelectual por la dirección del Movimiento en el que la obra de Heidegger se recibió y se usó (básicamente, la lectura falangista y la lectura del nacionalismo reaccionario), así como las estrategias discursivas a las que el maestro alemán se vio expuesto.

This article examines Palestinian identity transformation in Israel during the years between 1967 and 1987. Fifteen Palestinian novels and autobiographies were published in Israel during this period. My article will focus on a group of five from among them that I call counteraction novels. Counteraction novels show the failure of the Zionist modernist paradigm—according to which modernization and integration of Palestinians in Israel are complementary processes—by reflecting a Palestinian distinction between modernism and Zionism. On the one hand, the novels reflect that Palestinians in Israel are grappling with issues posed to them by modernization. On the other hand, counteraction novels present a uniform rejection of Zionism’s erasure and alienation of Palestinians in Israel. I also argue that counteraction novels do not portray a “positive” Palestinian identity; they do not voice what Palestinian identity is.

In this paper I present a short but diverse collection of writings, all of which seek to question the metaphysical dogma - seemingly held by many Heideggerian and ‘existential’ philosophers - that human existence ceases after death and that death is its ultimate terminus. In the 5 sections it includes,  I combine a variety of extracts from my own writings on the themes of both Bodyhood and ‘Being Beyond Death’ with those of others - including  the Iranologist Henry Corbin and the SETH books of Jane Roberts.

Awareness of climate change is mounting in seriousness, but what is less well explored is how climate change is provoking a profound critique on some of our philosophical traditions. The planet could shift into an epoch with conditions far too harsh for human habitation. In due course this is bound to happen, as a result of changes in our orbit, the polarity of the magnetic poles, the position of land mass in relation to the poles, and the lifetime of the sun. However, the rapid change in climate that is occurring at present has little or nothing to do with these larger cosmic forces. It is almost entirely due to feedbacks introduced by the inadvertent pollution from modern consumer industrialisation. How did we get to this impasse? The question is technological, cultural, and philosophical. It probes at the essence of modernity and at specific fault lines in the tradition of philosophy. Drawing from the history of philosophical ideas and the very modern concerns with climate change, this paper examines Heidegger's concern with the threshold of nihilism as a regenerative force in conceptualisation and our relationship with beings. Heidegger has a strong critique of modernity which takes up the finitude posed by nuclear devastation. More recently, and with even fuller dimensions, the looming boundary of climate change point to the nihilism inherent in modern thought. Somewhat surprisingly, Heidegger's approach to the zone that threatens to draw modern culture to an untimely close, is not entirely pessimistic. He regards the 'line' or boundary of the planetary conditions for human life as generating a new 'beginning.' That beginning (or the contemplation of the ending) generates the conditions for rethinking what it is to be meaningful human beings. So, it exemplifies the openness required to fully care and integrate the relationship between our planet and ourselves.

In some places, the surface of the world is smooth. Everyday life unfolds and existence is affirmed. In others, it is riddled with gaps, loops, and insurmountable blockades. Just being in the world feels like a full-time job, and at some point, it becomes impossible to cope. At this limit, existence itself is threatened. This essay asks: What if, using topology (and a little bit of calculus), this limit could be represented mathematically and transposed, universally, onto any landscape containing humans in order to localize existential crisis.

Eldracher seems to acknowledge the extent to which certain predicates of the subject have been deconstructed, in Heidegger’s critique as well as in the works of Levinas, Derrida and Foucault. What is the benefit, and to what right then does he still speak of the subject?

Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann, der letzte persönliche Assistent Heideg-gers, ist zweifellos einer der besten Kenner der Philosophie bzw. des Den-kens seines Lehrers, der in den letzten Jahrzehnten auch eine wichtige Rol-le bei der Herausgabe der Gesamtausgabe Heideggers spielte. The critique of ontology defined twentieth-century philosophy in both the Anglo-American and the European traditions. In Europe, the most generative form of this critique was phenomenology’s commitment to drawing the limits of human knowledge from within human experience. Theological responses to this critique have often centred on a phenomenology of human desire which, for de Lubac, C.S. Lewis and others, naturally breaks open the immanent realm in the pursuit of its supernatural end in God. These responses have been ontologically rooted in accounts (whether neo-Platonic or analogical in emphasis) of participation in the Trinitarian ground of being.
This work of re-constructing an ontology of finite reality by participation in the Trinity is vital but precarious. One persistent risk is insufficient attention to the force of phenomenology’s account of human temporality and mortality as conditions that cannot simply be outpaced towards participation in plenitude. Participatory ontology, in other words, is too often over-realized eschatology. This short paper argues that the phenomenological critique demands an eschatological turn in Trinitarian ontology: a theology of participation that takes more seriously the eschatological preliminariness of human knowing and being.

In my workshop, I will develop with the phenomenological help of Gaston Bachelard, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, David Michael Levin and Paul Claudel different possibilities of listening with one’s lived body. We will be especially exploring experientially, that is, phenomenologically the important and often hidden somatic connection between listening and breathing. We will ponder in theory and in praxis two questions: 1) How to become a great listener?” and 2) “How to become a great breather?” According to Bachelard, Levin and Claudel these two questions are intertwined. A great listener, in Bachelard’s and Claudel’s view, is capable to listen, in the first place, not the sounds, but the primordial silence of the world. Bachelard and Claudel connect this primordial silence with breathing. A great breather, in Bachelard’s view, is the one who is capable to breathe cosmically with one’s whole body. Merleau-Ponty, Heidegger and Levin think that listening is not only a capacity of our ears, but actually of our whole body. In relation to this, Claudel has suggested that our respiratory apparatus (like our lungs) have the potential capacity to hearken the primordially mysterious and atmospheric silence of the world. This potentiality often remains unrealized and undeveloped in our lives. In my workshop, we will be awakening within ourselves various hidden somatic ways of listening and breathing that will include experiential and mostly uncharted dimensions like 1) listening with one’s breath, 2) listening with one’s lungs, 3) listening with one’s breathing belly, 4) breathing with one’s ears, 5) listening and breathing with one’s spine, and 6) listening with one’s hands and feet in the atmosphere of breath. Through these various mysterious ways of listening and breathing we will experientially explore how we are given access to the sonorous and mute, spatial and temporal, private/hidden and social somatic dimensions of our lived bodies and the atmospheres surrounding them. This means that we will, for example, investigate how listening with one’s breath opens our inner somatic space of expansion and rhythmic time and what kind of intertwining of silence and sound we are given access to through the kinetic experience of spine. My workshop will give methods and practices for self-development and paths to travel toward becoming a “great listener” and a “great breather”.

Erst nachdem aus dem Nachlaß die zahlreichen Schriften und Vorlesungen Martin Heideggers zu und über Aristoteles veröffentlicht wurden, ist es möglich, ein präzises Bild vom Werden eines der einflußreichsten Denker des 20. Jahrhunderts zu zeichnen. 1 In diesem Kontext wird man auch die vorliegende, sehr umfangreiche Kölner Dissertation sehen müssen, die sich gründlich und solide mit dem im Titel präzise angegebenen Thema be-schäftigt. Der Verfasser gliedert seine Arbeit chronologisch und verfolgt den Weg der Heideggerschen Aristoteles-Rezeption präzise anhand der überlieferten Informationen zu Vorlesungen, Vorträgen und Publikationen bis zur Publikation des Heideggerschen Hauptwerks Sein und Zeit 1927. Die Phasen bis dahin seien hier nur kurz erwähnt. “Poruszający się obiekt – pisze Maurice Merleau-Ponty w “Fenomenologii percepcji” – jako przedmiot nieskończonej serii wyraźnych i zgodnych ze sobą postrzeżeń, ma własności, podczas gdy coś poruszającego się ma tylko pewien swój styl”. Tuż po tym uściśla, że chodzi mu o owo “coś” oraz o przysługujący mu ruch: “ruch nie zakłada koniecznie poruszającego się obiektu, to znaczy przedmiotu zdefiniowanego przez zespół określonych własności – wystarczy, że zawiera “coś nieokreślonego, co się porusza”, najwyżej “coś barwnego” albo “świecącego” bez wyraźnie określonej barwy czy jasności”. Filozof łączy go ponadto z pojęciami motywu i przechodzenia; mówi o tym, co jest czymś dopóki się dzieje. Inaczej mówiąc, takie coś, nie będąc hipostazą ze stałymi właściwościami, okazuje się wielce osobliwym bytem: jako byt właśnie może być co najmniej przedmiotem postrzeżenia i artykulacji, a zarazem przysługuje mu dynamika dziania się, wydarzania.

Powstaje tu jednak problem, jeżeli taką pośrednią formę bytu przymierza się do opisanej przez Martina Heideggera – niewątpliwie binarnej – różnicy ontologicznej, znamiennej dla tej tradycji filozofowania, którą Merleau-Ponty zdawał się kontynuować: jako dla wyłączonego środka nie ma dla niej tu miejsca.

Na gruncie terminologii spoza filozofii Heideggera i Merleau-Ponty’ego, owo “coś”, wymykające takiej binarności, dałoby się porównać do performatywu jako działania ziszczającego się w chwili swego wydarzania (odgłosy czego można byłoby znaleźć u Levinasa lub Derridy), a z drugiej strony – do Arystotelesowej dynamis, czyli, inaczej mówiąc, potentia, możności – bytu przed obleczeniem go w nadające się do precyzyjnej identyfikacji szaty stałości. Jednakże ze względu na brak owych szat, znalezienie w miarę skutecznego podejścia, pozwalającego taki byt opisać, wygląda na wyjątkowo trudne. Zdaje się jednak, iż zdawkowo przedstawiona przez Merleau-Ponty’ego sugestia na temat stylu może służyć za klucz do wyróżnienia takiej szczególnej postaci bytu. W tym właśnie kontekście – z rozważaniami Arystotelesa i Heideggera w tle – w proponowanym referacie zostanie przedstawiony “styl”.

A Theologian’s Guide to Heidegger provides a uniquely theological introduction to the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, by focusing on not just the relationship between Heidegger and theology, or even the nature of the discourse that must occur between theological concerns and Heidegger’s philosophical errands, but by precisely exploring how theology can use Heidegger’s philosophy as a means of outlining the scope and task of postmodern theology. To do this, especially with the postmodern theologian in mind, this book considers the general relationship between Heidegger and theology, how Heidegger can be read theologically, while justifying why Heidegger must be read this way and defining the role that Heidegger must take in postmodern theology. This includes a careful consideration of Heidegger’s early theological roots from Freiburg to Marburg by examining the content of Heidegger’s lesser-known theologically-minded seminars, lectures, and talks.
