General observations Here I will use the term 'group' to refer solely to a collection of individual people, which is to say I use it only to refer to human groups. However, group, as a general term, is actually quite difficult to pin down by easy definition. There are, of course, many obvious reasons for this, but here are a few of the more trenchant. Group vs aggregate There is a qualitative distinction between a 'mere collection' of people thrust willy nilly together and a group of people. Bion (19??) called the difference one of 'groupiness', and we can all recognise the difference when we experience it. But pinning it down precisely has always caused conceptual tangles resulting in competing definitions, half-definitions and outright guesses. The most common wriggle out of the conundrum has been to assert that a group has some overarching purpose or goal, shared by all members, whereas an aggregate of people does not. For most purposes we can get away with this, but it really is not entirely adequate. Consider a bus queue, one favourite example of an aggregate. Although lacking 'groupiness', a bus queue consists of a several people all united by a single overarching goal, namely catching the 8.45 no.7 bus to Fiddler's Green. Furthermore, this collection of people observes rules of behaviour and precedence, even though this is not always obvious (except when someone jumps the queue for example). Consider the same queue on a day when Britain has its annual day of snow. Everything is disrupted, and the no.7 is an hour late, possibly even cancelled. Miraculously the collection of people seems to develop a magical sense of togetherness, in this case generated by a shared sense of discomfort and inconvenience, perhaps also a shared sense of grievance but overwhelmingly with their shared sense of heroism in the face of dark natural forces that together they must face. Compare this with a 'group' in an office, all trudging along doing their own little bit of miserable labour, uncoordinated, lacking any sense of overarching purpose, but united by a shared sense of misery and pointlessness.

* This book is the French translation of 'The MSP Guide: How to design and facilitate multi-stakeholder partnerships' *

Ces dernières années, les partenariats multipartites (PMP) sont devenus populaires pour s’attaquer aux défi s complexes que pose le développement durable. Ce guide off re un cadre pratique pour la conception et la facilitation de ces processus collaboratifs qui décloisonnent le monde des aff aires, des pouvoirs publics, de la société civile et de la science. Le guide établit un lien entre le raisonnement qui sous-tend les partenariats multipartites, selon un modèle de processus clair en quatre phases, un ensemble de sept principes phares, des idées clés pour la facilitation et 60 outils participatifs d’analyse, de planifi cation et de prise de décisions.
Le guide a été rédigé à l’intention de ceux qui sont directement impliqués dans les PMP – qu’ils soient parties prenantes, dirigeants, facilitateurs ou bailleurs de fonds – pour leur fournir les concepts de base et les outils pratiques qui sous-tendent des partenariats réussis.
Cet ouvrage s’inspire directement de l’expérience du personnel du Centre d’innovation pour le développement (CDI), à l’Université et au Centre de recherches de Wageningen, en soutien aux processus PMP dans de nombreux pays à travers le monde. Le guide réunit également les idées et les supports qui donnent corps au stage international de formation de trois semaines organisé chaque année par le CDI sur la facilitation des PMP et l’apprentissage social.
Ces travaux ont été inspirés par la motivation et la passion que l’on voit apparaître lorsque les gens osent se mettre à la place des autres pour trouver ensemble de nouvelles trajectoires vers des ambitions communes pour un avenir meilleur.

Sensory impaired individuals are at a disadvantage in accessing and processing electronic information. The first author (i.e. Thomas Hahn) is legally blind due to Albinism. In this experience report we describe challenges faced by the visually impaired and explain how remote access programs in combination with voice communication programs can be used to—at least partially—compensate for those disadvantages because they don't transmit magnification. This property is especially important to effectively train visually impaired individuals on new applications and interfaces remotely because it allows them to view exactly the same information simultaneously with their sighted trainers. Since the technical prerequisites for this information exchange, skill transfer, and knowledge acquisition approach have already been freely available for at least 7 years, but are still not widely used, this approach needs to be impressively demonstrated at conferences like this one to increase the odds that its participants will share this approach with those who could potentially benefit from it. This approach could make computer labs with expensive software not only accessible to the disabled, but instead, to everyone around the clock while saving money, which is still being spent to pay lab supervisors to keep the labs open for a few hours without losing—but instead—gaining functionality. Offering virtual remote office hours would benefit disabled and non-handicapped students and faculty alike. Providing remote access to lectures can make them available to a wider audience and thus could decrease costs for tuition. Obvious benefits of this approach for the mobility impaired and soon to be expected benefits for the hearing impaired are mentioned. Allowing faculty to remotely participate in oral exams increases choices for possible specializations. Making information more accessible to the disabled has obvious synergistic benefits for non-handicapped people alike as reflected by the importance of the concept of workforce diversification for overcoming unexpected future challenges and potential stumbling blocks. This approach makes it possible to magnify lecture presentations directly onto the screen of visually impaired students and could improve real-time interactions in the classroom. Remote access for everyone could reduce the perception of disabilities. Handicapped people could be considered early adopters because they are more in need of improvements since the present circumstances and limitations are much less acceptable to them. This article concludes by describing current bottlenecks to accessibility and information transfer, and ends with an overall optimistic outlook to the future.
