The iconography of Roman funerary monuments from
the western parts of the Central Balkans’ Roman provinces (eastern and south-eastern parts of the Roman province Dalmatia)
shows similarities to the funerary monuments
from the interior of the province of Dalmatia, particularly
in the context of displayed conservatism of the
indigenous population for whom the monuments were
made. Owing to the forms of the funerary monuments,
represented themes and ornaments, two main cultural
influences can be observed: a first influence from
Pannonia (which came along the river Drina) which is
most visible in the funerary monuments in the area
of Užice and Skelani (Municipium Malvesatium) and a
second influence that is shown in the funerary monuments
from the territory of Polimlje (localities Kolovrat,
Municipium S), which came from coastal Dalmatia with
Salona as a cultural centre, and from south-eastern
parts like Macedonia and Kosovo.92 However, from
the beginning of the third century CE on, an intensive
Romanisation on the territory of the western parts of
the Central Balkans’ Roman provinces can be recognized
in epigraphic monuments and archaeological
material, which imply a connection with the coastal
part of Dalmatia. Furthermore, this also proves that
a group of inhabitants which was resettled from the
hinterland of Salona to the western parts of the Central
Balkans’ Roman provinces at the end of the first century
CE, became the actual bearers of the process of
Romanisation (along with members of the indigenous
aristocracy) and assimilated autochthonous population
from the afore-mentioned parts, despite an omnipresent
traditional conservatism in iconographic details
of local dress or jewellery in the funerary monuments,
which continued until the fourth century CE.

In den letzten Jahren erfreut sich Pilgern wieder größeren Interesses und wird in der Wissenschaft verstärkt erforscht. Letzteres gilt auch für die Antike und das Mittelalter nördlich der Alpen. Pilgern wird als zielgerichtete Reise zu einem sakralen Ort verstanden. Die Motive für eine Wallfahrt sind so vielfältig wie die Menschen, die sie unternehmen, und wohl nur selten brachen Pilger aus nur einem Grund auf. Die religiöse Motivation für eine Wallfahrt konnte die Bitte um etwas sein, wie zum Beispiel Genesung oder die Erfüllung eines Kinderwunsches, aber auch der Dank für die Errettung aus einer Notlage. In der Antike pilgerte man zu Orten des persönlichen Heils und zu Stätten des Kaiserkultes. Ersteres konnte, insbesondere bei Pilgerreisen zu Quellheiligtümern, mit Aspekten eines Kuraufenthaltes verschränkt sein. Zu Stätten des Kaiserkultes reiste man auch aus Gründen der soziopolitischen Teilhabe. Die spätere christliche Wallfahrt war auch mit der Bitte um die Vergebung von Sündenstrafen verknüpft und ist auf das Engste mit dem Ablass verbunden. Denn in der christlichen Frühzeit waren der Aufenthalt in der Fremde und der Besuch von heiligen Stätten die Voraussetzung für die Wiederaufnahme des Sünders in die Gemeinschaft der Gläubigen. Die Höhe des dort zu erwerbenden Ablasses war in vielen Fällen ausschlaggebend für die Attraktivität eines Wallfahrtsortes. Die zahlreichen sozialen Angebote, wie kostenfreie Übernachtungen und Verpflegung in Hospizen, lockte auch Personen auf die Straßen, bei denen die religiösen Gründe nicht im Vordergrund standen.
