German Literature and Culture

„Die Antike“ als eine der zentralen Referenzen der deutschen Aufklärung ist keineswegs homogen, sondern zeichnet sich durch ihre Pluralität aus. Namen und eben auch Lokalitäten implizieren auf kompakte Weise ästhetische Konzepte, anthropologische Programme, ethisch-moralische Normen, Gesellschaftsmodelle, politische Orientierungen oder Ideale literarischer Kommunikation. Die antike Tradition verfügt über eine interne Topographie mit verschiedenen anspielungsreichen Orten; und sie wird von bestimmten Orten aus adressiert und vereinnahmt. In Poetiken und Vorreden, in Bildprogrammen von Titelkupfern und Vignetten oder in Entscheidungen für Gattungen, Sujets und Motive trägt der Rekurs auf die Antike dazu bei, wiedererkennbare Profile zu etablieren. Dabei interagieren literarische Projekte mit einer Vielzahl von Faktoren, die sich aus den regionalen Bedingungen herleiten.
Die Beiträge dieses Bandes analysieren die Ordnungen, die dieser Pluralität der Antike im 18. Jahrhundert zugrunde liegen. Sie fragen danach, wie die literarische Aufklärung auf das vielfältige Angebot der Überlieferung zugreift, um Positionen in den Konkurrenzen und Allianzen des literarischen Feldes zu kennzeichnen.

Il contributo affronta lo Zauberberg di Thomas Mann e la figura del suo protagonista a partire dalla figura romantica del genio artistico, mostrando come in tale categoria sociologica ed estetica si intersechino elementi di radicalizzazione e di critica dell'ideologia borghese. L'interpretazione che viene avanzata dell'episodio dello Schneetraum chiarisce in che senso il genio artistico porti alla luce il rimosso della società borghese, proprio nel momento in cui ne immagina la realizzazione compiuta.

An investigation into what drove and fueled modern European thinkers’ interest in China, and how they reconstructed its cultural legacy—Daoist philosophy, in particular—as they pondered alternative solutions to 20th-century Western issues.
Using my method “transreading,” which integrates lento reading, poetic translation, creative writing, and cultural hermeneutics, we explore writings of the philosopher and theologian Martin Buber, the sinologist Richard Wilhelm, the novelist Alfred Döblin, and the poet Franz Kafka.

В статье рассматривается ментальная программа Александра фон Гумбольдта как измерение немецкого осознания мира, представленного в романе австрийского писателя Даниэля Кельмана «Измеряя мир». Александр фон Гумбольдт в романе Д. Кельмана является знаковым героем немецкой культуры, познающим мироздание и одновременно через познание себя познающим немецкую самость, идентичность: быть немцем означает стремиться к пониманию глубинных законов мира. В случае Александра фон Гумбольдта это возможно только в путешествии, в ментальном движении, которое само по себе уже есть измерение мира / Der Artikel thematisiert das Mentalprogramm von Alexander von Humboldt als Dimension für das deutsche Weltbewusstsein, das der österreichische Schriftsteller Daniel Kelmann im Roman „Measuring the World“ vorstellt. Alexander von Humboldt in D. Kelmans Roman ist ein Kultheld der deutschen Kultur, der das Universum erkennt und gleichzeitig das deutsche Selbst und die deutsche Identität erkennt, indem er sich selbst kennt: deutsch zu sein bedeutet, die tiefsten Gesetze der Welt zu verstehen. Dies ist bei Alexander von Humboldt nur im Reisen möglich, in der mentalen Bewegung, die an sich schon eine Dimension der Welt ist / The article deals with the mental program of Alexander von Humboldt as a dimension of the German awareness of the world, presented in the novel by Austrian writer Daniel Kelman "Measuring the world". Alexander von Humboldt in the novel by D. Kelman is an iconic hero of German culture, knowing the universe and at the same time through the knowledge of the German self, identity: to be a German means to strive to understand the deep laws of the world. In the case of Alexander von Humboldt, this is possible only in the journey, in the mental movement, which in itself is already a dimension of the world.

The article provides one of the very few coherent overall interpretations of  the most important German novel of the 17th century. The protagonist's path is understood as a movement of writing and overwriting concepts of life, which represent the entire intellectual spectrum of the Baroque era.

This book containing a collection of essays, stories, and poems  was first published in 1986 to illustrate experiences, perceptions, and facts  of divided Germany. In a new version appearing 30 years after the Falll of the Wall,  the editor Frank Blohm, psychoanalyst by profession, has added a number of texts by the same authors (e.g. Helga Schubert, Irene Böhme, Katja-Lange-Müller) as well some of his own. The book evokes bitter memories, in particular a short text and a poem by Jürgen Fuchs, who died as a  victim of Stasi long-time persecution in 1999.

This article examines the issues of authenticity that accompany Marten Persiel's award winning 'hybrid' documentary This Ain't California (2012). Taking on the appearance of a traditional documentary, Persiel's film tells the little-known story of a skating subculture in 1980s East Germany. Occupying a contentious space between documentary and fiction, This Ain't California's form and content raise questions of authenticity. When it comes to cultural memory and storytelling, this paper posits that plural, material, and emotional authenticities can be usefully revealed by breaking down the perceived wall the separates the broad ontologies of 'truth' and 'fiction'. Nuance in this regard is as vital as ever: memories of the German Democratic Republic remain contested, despite three decades having passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall. An analysis of technologies and techniques of filmmaking is tied together with central focus on the embodied spectator's perception within the film-experience; this study touches on the "memory work" (Kuhn) of This Ain't California through an investigative framework that considers the relations between two bodies-those belonging to both viewer and film. Of particular interest is how the filmmakers (re)create the everyday by shooting 'amateur' skate clips with Super 8 cameras. Presenting these 'falsified' sequences as archival footage, in accordance with generic documentary conventions, the film arouses salient points for examining how the spectator is affected by mediated cultural memories.
