French Revolution

This table provides an overview of the contents of curricula for history in Germany with regrad to the French Revolution. My interest was merely to check if religion or the religious history is specifically mentioned.
The final conclusion is outstanding and curricula do not represent the content of a lesson adequately but the data indicates that the draftsmen- ans women of the curricula expect that the French Revolution should still be considered as the cradle of modernity - a claim more or less contested by recent research in socio-anthropology as well as in religious studies.

The professorship of Early Modern Period at the Trier University seeks to fill the positions of Three Research Associates (m/f/d) (salary calculated according to group E13 TV-L, 65%) as part of the ERC-funded research project "Pamphlets and Patrons" (PAPA), commencing on October 1st, 2021. The position is limited to three years.

The despoliation of the Strasbourg Cathedral during the Jacobin Terror of 1793–94 has long been considered a high point of revolutionary iconoclasm, which manifested for some the anti-enlightened nature of the Terror regime and the violence inherent in the French Revolution itself. The hybrid space—linguistic, cultural, and political—in which these vandalizing acts took place, however, brings to the fore the problem of Franco-German cultural transfer and its politics of emotion as a significant, yet previously untapped, interpretative layer. This article explores the emotional vocabularies used by both French and German commentators, which substantiated their divergent stances regarding historical consciousness, aesthetic sensibility, and national identity in the debate on the legitimacy of revolutionary violence. This article is an attempt to explore and offer new interpretations of
the personality and works of the notorious Marquis de Sade. A topical matter, de
Sade’s literature is important today, as it was back in the past. His impact has shaped
the ideas of several famous philosophers, writers, and public figures. The question
on debate here is to what extent this impact has been analyzed correctly from the
historical perspective.

Il contributo si propone di analizzare la relazione tra il concetto di libertà e quello di sicurezza durante il Triennio repubblicano (1796-1799). Nella fattispecie la relazione analizzerà il pensiero e l’azione di Giovanni Fantoni (Fivizzano 1755-1807) che, conosciuto col nome arcadico di Labindo, oltre ad essere un celebre poeta neoclassico fu, com’è noto, tra i principali attori del movimento repubblicano italiano. Le sue posizioni e quelle dei suoi compagni entrarono inevitabilmente in contrasto con le politiche del Direttorio francese e con i piani di Bonaparte riguardo alle «repubbliche sorelle» che tra il 1796 e il 1799 si andarono costituendo nella penisola italiana.
Durante il Triennio repubblicano i patrioti italiani, con il mutare delle politiche del Direttorio francese e delle azioni perpetrate dal genare Bonaparte, dovettero adattare i propri piani in risposta alle esigenze del momento.
Ciò emerge in maniera significativa nel pensiero ed azione di Fantoni che mirava, insieme ad altri giacobini, a rendere la penisola libera e indipendente. Infatti, se nel ’96, come dimostrano il disegno costituzionale proposto all’Amministrazione Generale della Lombardia e le riflessioni sulla Pubblica educazione in cui concentrò l’attenzione sul rapporto tra libertà e sicurezza in maniera astratta in supporto alla difesa della patria in un contesto di cooperazione con l’Armé, a partire dal 1798 le parole vennero sostituite con l’azione cospirativa messa in atto contro gl’agenti francesi.
Questi ultimi, con lo scopo di ottenere il controllo totale della Repubblica Cisalpina, avviarono una politica d’epurazione contro gli indipendentisti che se nel ’96-’97 venivano considerati come bravi patrioti nel biennio ’98-’99 vennero accusati di terrorismo e anarchia.
Per queste ragioni il paper sarà suddiviso in due parti: nella prima verrà affrontato la teoria sul rapporto tra libertà e sicurezza rispetto alla nascente Repubblica; nella seconda parte, invece, verranno analizzati alcuni episodi chiave simboli della lotta per la libertà a discapito della sicurezza imposta dai francesi.

In Paris, the Little Pantheon is the theatre on rue de Chartres which, together with other showrooms, competed with the great Pantheon on rue Soufflot between the 18th and 19th century. The Little Pantheon introduced the idea of a Big Man embracing the excluded personalities from the official Pantheon, and those categories, such as the actors, which had been hitherto marginalised. This volume takes into consideration a new theatrical genre bringing on stage the public and private lives of Great Men of Letters, Philosophy and the Arts, be them real or imaginary. This book is not only original for its analysis of the revolutionary mentality that shapes a new concept of Fame, but also functions as a tool to account for the extent of the phenomenon from a chronological and thematic perspective thanks to the Catalogues.

Il Piccolo Pantheon è a Parigi il teatro della rue de Chartres che, con altre sale di spettacolo, fra Sette e Ottocento fa concorrenza al grande Pantheon di rue Soufflot. Il piccolo Pantheon è portatore di un’idea di Grande Uomo che abbraccia personalità escluse dal Pantheon ufficiale e categorie fino ad allora emarginate, quali gli attori. Il volume prende in considerazione un nuovo genere teatrale che porta in scena la vita pubblica e privata, reale o immaginaria, di Grandi Uomini delle Lettere, della Filosofia e delle Arti. Originale per la sua analisi della mentalità rivoluzionaria che plasma un concetto nuovo di Fama, il libro è anche uno strumento di lavoro grazie ai Cataloghi che mirano a rendere conto dell’ampiezza del fenomeno dal punto di vista cronologico e tematico.

This article examines the relationship between war, revolution, and citizenship during the Paris Commune of 1871. The event marked a moment in which French radicals began to rethink the nation's revolutionary heritage as they proposed alternative models for a reconstituted republican government and society. War and military conflict were important factors in these ideological considerations, especially as radical republicans grappled with concepts of offensive and defensive revolutionary strategies. As this article suggests, these arguments came to inform novel ideas regarding republican citizenship and state institutions, demonstrating that the civil war of 1871 was conceptualized as a turning point in France's revolutionary tradition in the 19th century.
