" Anatomy of one cloister community (1706–1782) The article offers a glimpse into a personal structure of the still neglected cloister of the contem-plative order of Celestine nuns (or Sisters of Annunciation), which was introduced to Bohemia by a well-known nobleman Franz Anton von Sporck in 1706 and which first existed in south-Bo-hemian Choustníkovo Hradiště and then in Prague after 1739 until its cancellation in 1782. The important features of the cloister community's inner condition include the social and geographic origin of its members, circumstances of the candidacy and activity of the nuns in the order, administration of the individual convent offices or inner differentiation of the community, which can serve as a base for looking into other aspects of life in the early modern female cloister community. It becomes apparent that the commented statistical data are one of the available means of understanding the everyday reality of the strict order and can serve as a suitable basis for research into the issue in a broader aspect.

Post–Trent Council Exceeding the Boundaries of the Enclosure in St. George’s Convent at
Prague Castle as the Confirmation of “Age-Old” Prestige
The article deals with the infringement of enclosure boundaries set by the Council of Trent, using the example
of the Benedictine convent at St. George’s Basilica at Prague Castle (the 17th and the 18th centuries). It
defines a few key moments when the exceeding of the boundaries was possible without the dispensation of
a relevant ordinary officer. In the field of an active enclosure, it was mainly the participation of a St. George’s
abbess in the coronations of Bohemians queens, in the case of a passive enclosure, the visits of the members
of the ruling dynasty and the presence of official guests at the coronations of princess-abbesses. In the case of
female convents, similar runnings counter to Tridentinum conclusions do not probably have an equivalent
parallel in the Czech lands, although some of them, but to a much smaller extent, can be found in the
Prague Convent of the Discalced Carmelites.

Ora et labora – bete und arbeite! Das benediktinische Mönchtum hat mit der Verbindung von Askese und tätigem Leben die Kultur Europas geformt. Mirko Breitenstein schildert die Geschichte der Benediktiner von ihrem sagenumwobenen Gründer Benedikt von Nursia und seiner Ordensregel bis zur Gegenwart und macht deutlich, warum Lebensformen und Spiritualität der Benediktiner einen so nachhaltigen Einfluss auf Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft hatten.

This article concerns four liturgical codices copied in the scriptorium of the Monastery of Alcobaça between the mid-fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries. The late textual additions that concern rituals specific to Cistercian nunneries will be examined with the aim of understanding the uses of such additions in their context, and of determining their impact on our knowledge of female Cistercian monasteries and on Alcobaça’s jurisdiction over the women under its wing during this period.

This paper analyzes relevant features of the female religious community of San Zaccaria in Venice, from its foundation until the end of the thirteenth century. The study highlights, on the one hand, how complex and variegated were the processes of formation of such an important religious community and, on the other hand, how much such processes reveal the wider role played by the nuns of San Zaccaria, particularly by its abbesses, in the non-religious political and social life of Venice. By investigating the community in its main components – that is, examining individual profiles both of religious women and secular companions of the same period – and to which families they belonged, the paper aims to underline how important it was for a monastic institution like San Zaccaria to be able to manage its vast estates and to enhance its reputation. In this regard, it was crucial for the nunnery to plan the selection of its members carefully, by considering their family origins as well as their individual qualities and skills at administering both people and estates.

St. Giulia’s Museum in Brescia preserves a capital that is a veritable rarity in the artistic pro- duction linked to the nunnery, founded by the last Lombard kings and dedicated to Christ the Saviour. On the basis of an iconological reading of the images carved on the four faces of the capital, this paper correlates those representations with a precise phase in the history of the monastery, the late Carolingian age, when the daughters of Lothair I and Louis II, both named Gisla, became members of the monastic community.

Italian scholarship has already underscored the similarities between the royal foundation of St. Salvatore of Brescia and St. Sofia of Benevento, founded by Arechis, duke of Benevento, before 774. However, St. Sofia is still considered not only as a family foundation but also as the “Lombards’ national sanctuary” in Southern Italy. Taking into account Arechis’ political project and strategies of representation of his public authority, this study aims to reconsider both the family dimension and the political and religious role of St. Sofia in Lombard Southern Italy. During the first half of the ninth century, the role of the monastery changed as a consequence of the political, social and devotional transformations that were taking place in Benevento. The last part of this study, therefore, focuses on the role of St. Sofia and the monastery’s relationship with the princes after the end of Arechis’ dynasty.

Généralement méconnu du grand public, l’ordre des annonciades célestes retient l’attention de la recherche universitaire depuis plusieurs années. Fondées à Gênes en 1604, ces religieuses contemplatives et strictement cloîtrées sont en effet particulièrement représentatives des nouvelles congrégations qui se multiplient à partir du XVIe siècle. Bien qu’elles n’aient établi qu’une cinquantaine de maisons en Europe, ces religieuses se sont engagées dans la Réforme catholique, prenant position sur une « ligne de front » face aux mondes protestants qui relie l’Italie à la Mer du Nord au cours de la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Ayant subi de plein fouet les vagues de suppression des communautés qui se sont succédées dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle, seuls les écrits qu’elles ont produits et les édifices qu’elles ont érigés peuvent encore témoigner de leurs présences discrètes au cœur de nos cités.
En Haute-Marne plus qu’ailleurs, les annonciades célestes ont laissé leurs empreintes dans la pierre à Joinville, Langres et Bourmont, et même dans le souvenir des habitants puisque les deux premiers ont fermé leurs portes au cours du XXe siècle. Puisant dans la production écrite et architecturale de ces femmes, cette conférence propose de revenir sur le contexte dans lequel ces communautés sont apparues, de comprendre leurs motivations profondes et leurs aspirations, pour relire à nouveaux frais l’histoire de ces communautés qui ont dû relever, comme tant d’autres, le défi de concilier esprit de retraite et insertion dans le monde. À cette occasion, une visite introductive de la chapelle des annonciades de Bourmont sera proposée au public.

Des plaintes présentées en consistoire au nom de Ricarde de Montagut, prieure de Sainte-Marie de la Rive, contre Brenguier de Fabrègues, chanoine de Maguelonne et prieur de Fabrègues (paroisse située entre Montpellier et Sète), donnèrent lieu en avril 1327 à l’émission d’un mandement d’enquête de Jean XXII après de premiers développements à l’audience cardinalice du cardinal Guillaume de Peyre Godin. Avant de donner le texte latin de cette lettre, suivi d’une traduction française, on analyse les éléments de procédure qui peuvent y être relevés ainsi que le récit, haut en couleur, des méfaits du prieur.  Ce dernier aurait eu commerce charnel avec deux moniales de Sainte-Marie, lesquelles auraient été ses complices et auraient ensuite essayé d’assassiner Ricarde de Montagut. Le prieur se serait aussi rendu coupable d’autres atteintes au droit (injurie) et crimes au détriment de la communauté, parmi lesquels seule la « dilapidation » est évoquée explicitement. On retrouve donc ici une association, très souvent observée dans les procès contre les prélats aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles, entre péchés charnels et abus au détriment des intérêts matériels de l’Église. Quelques documents conservés aux Archives départementales de l’Hérault, cependant, jettent une lumière différente sur l’affaire. Ils révélent que Brenguier de Fabrègues prétendait exercer un droit de contrôle, contesté par la prieure, sur la communauté de Sainte-Marie.

הרפורמציות פתחו פתח לתמורות ניכרות ביחסי המגדר. מאמר זה מתמקד באחת המרכזיות שבהן: ההשפעה המורכבת של ביטול מוסד הנזירות על-ידי מרטין לותר על אפשרויות הפעולה הפתוחות בפני נשים, לעומת אלה העומדות בפני גברים, בתחום הדתי. המאמר בוחן את תגובותיהן של נשים בחבלי-ארץ שהפכו לפרוטסטנטים לפירוק מנזריהן, ודן בהתמודדות של ראשי הכנסייה הקתולית עם הביקורת הלותרנית על חיי הנזירות בוועידת טרנטו (1545-1563). הוא מראה, כי למרות שהוועדה דחתה את עיקרי-האמונה הפרוטסטנטיים והדגישה את החשיבות של חיי הנזירות, בתגובה לביקורת הלותרנית היא הורתה על סגירה קפדנית של מנזרי נשים, בהותירה לנזירות מרחב פעולה צר ביותר להשתתפות בקידום מטרותיה של הכנסייה הלוחמת.
