The harpists’ songs from the Saqqara New Kingdom necropolis come from a variety of dates and tomb-contexts. The texts of these songs show little direct intertextuality or quotation between one another, but borrow from a common stock of themes also found at Thebes. The data from Saqqara is limited, and therefore does not allow for a particularly detailed discussion of transmission of the harpists’ songs at this site by itself. The greater quantity of material from Thebes, however, does allow the discussion of compositional process in the harpists’ songs. In particular, the four songs published by Wente appear to be the result of a compositional process of assembling the text from common formulae and stock phrases, or through ‘cut-and-paste’. These are features more broadly attested in Egyptian literary composition, and result in the ‘fragmentation’ which Eyre describes as characteristic of Egyptian literature. At a broader level, this may be reflected in the use of compositional ‘building-blocks’ in the arrangement of texts and images within tombs as whole.

Although some of the harpists’ songs at Saqqara, in particular those found in the tombs of Nebnefer and Tatia, show some similarities in decoration, there does not appear to be a direct copying of motifs for this scene between tombs. The cosmetic box of Ipy, and its scene of musicians, shows clear overlaps in design with late Eighteenth Dynasty tomb scenes in Thebes, and particularly the tomb of Nakht (TT 52), and the banquet scene from the chapel of Ptahmay. The harpist’s song in the chapel of Paatenemhab is partially preserved, but appears to be the same text as the ‘harpist’s song in the tomb of Intef’ on p. Harris 500. The two copies of the text appear to show little variation, and may indicate that this harpist’s song had canonical status. The harpist’s scene in the tomb of Raia appears to be unique. Rather than depicting a harpist singing to Raia, it depicts Raia singing to the gods. Although the song is badly damaged and the single surviving phrase is not attested elsewhere, its selection of motifs and expressions clearly belongs to the genre of harpists’ songs. The scene is placed over scenes of the funeral cortege, and for these reasons appears to depict Raia singing to the gods in the afterlife, rather than performing his job in this world.

The harpist’s songs appear to have a ritual context in accompanying offering. This offering occurs at a transitional moment for the deceased, likely the end of the funeral, when their mummy has been ritually reactivated by the ‘Opening of the Mouth’, and they are free to journey into the Netherworld. This context would plausibly explain the variety of texts found in the harpists’ songs, both of an ‘optimistic’ variety which praise the netherworld, and those which praise ‘making holiday’ in this life, or which cast doubt on the efficacy of funerary monuments. The offering context also appears to be connected with feasts held at the tomb at other times. These were likely held during festivals. Such feasts have often been assumed to take place during the ‘Beautiful Festival of the Valley’ in Thebes, but this context is unlikely to have held at Saqqara. The Festival of Sokar was one of the most prominent festivals in the Memphite region, but feasts may have taken place in the necropolis on many occasions during the year. The harpists’ songs appear to be connected to the ‘laying down of provisions’ and the making of offerings not only as part of the funeral but also at subsequent festivals, which may have been accompanied by banqueting at the tomb. It may be futile to seek for a single context for the harpist’s song, of any of the types identified in prior literature on the topic, however, owing to the variety of possible contexts for the songs. This may relate to the ‘multiplicity of approaches’, much-referenced in discussions of Egyptian religion, and the high degree of variation between manuscripts of Egyptian literary works. There may also be a more direct cause, however, in the individual choices made in the decoration of particular tombs, and perhaps in the performance of funerary rituals, as individuals and groups continuously reappropriate religious practices for their own use, “weaving individual life-cycles into long-term histories” (Kolen/Renes 2015: 21).

The Egyptian Museum of Florence, in collaboration with the University of Florence, hosted the Eleventh International Congress of Egyptologists which took place from 23rd to 30th August 2015, under the patronage of the IAE-International Association of Egyptologists. This volume publishes 136 papers and posters presented during the Congress. Topics discussed here range from archaeology, religion, philology, mummy investigations and archaeometry to history, offering an up-to-date account of research in these fields.

Los estudios de J. Assmann sobre las características que tiene la memoria cultural en las primeras civilizaciones han originado diferentes debates además de haber abierto nuevas líneas de investigación. En este trabajo analizaremos qué se entiende por memoria cultural para, posteriormente, buscar los orígenes de dicha memoria cultural del Egipto Faraónico cuando apareció el Estado y en tiempos predinásticos. Con posterioridad comprobaremos cómo la memoria cultural pervivió en el Egipto faraónico a lo largo de más tres mil años de historia.
Una memoria cultural que se transmitió a través de los textos y, especialmente, de una forma visual con los monumentos, funerarios o no, que transmitían no solo unas creencias funerarias, también una concepción del mundo en el que los antiguos egipcios vivieron. La estrecha relación que existió entre dicha memoria cultural y lo que los antiguos egipcios veían en su entorno explica la perdurabilidad, no solo de sus creencias, también de una civilización que fue capaz de emitir unos mensajes que eran entendidos por todos los miembros de la sociedad.

El presente artículo es fruto de una investigación sobre la representación de la danza en las tumbas tebanas privadas del Reino Nuevo (1550-1070 a.C.). En él se pretende poner en contexto la representación de la danza dentro de las conocidas escenas de banquete de la XVIII dinastía (1550-1295 a.C.), así como analizar, mediante el estudio de todas las escenas encontradas, sus características principales y su simbología. Por último, se intentará explicar su posible interpretación, basada en el contexto en el que aparecen, y las convenciones utilizadas para su representación. Por lo tanto, se resaltarán los elementos comunes de estas escenas (ubicación, iconografía…) que son los que nos ayudan a entender su significado e importancia.
Se trata de un tema relevante, ya que estas escenas de banquete en las que aparecen bailarinas estaban cargadas de contenido simbólico y estético, y servían de nexo entre el difunto y los visitantes de la tumba. Tenían así, por lo tanto, una gran importancia para el pensamiento religioso egipcio, pues ayudaban a la supervivencia del difunto en el Más Allá.

Die Arbeit behandelt den Zusammenhang von Identität und materieller Kultur, die bis heute in der Archäologie grundlegender Gegenstand der Forschung ist. Anfangs ging man von einem direkten Zusammenhang zwischen materieller Kultur, also allen verwendeten Dingen des menschlichen Lebens, und den Identitätsaspekten der Menschen (Geschlecht, Alter, Ethnie, u.a.), die sie verwendeten, aus. Dadurch wurden die Identitäten der historischen Menschen für eindeutig bestimmt gehalten (z.B. Spiegel werden von Frauen verwendet, Waffen von Männern; nicht-lokale Keramik beweist die Anwesenheit von Zuwanderern, etc.). Postkoloniale theoretische Kritik und Diskussionen führten dazu, diesen Ansatz massiv zu hinterfragen, da Identität einerseits selbstgewählt ist, und andererseits multiple Identitäten situationsabhängig zum Einsatz kommen. Darüber hinaus wird Identität erst sichtbar, wenn sie auch von einem abgegrenzten Gegenüber wahrgenommen und rezipiert wird. Diese Sicht ist weder immer bewusst noch hat sie sich überall durchgesetzt. Seit den 1990er Jahren bilden ethnische Identität und Migrationen wichtige Forschungsfragen. Diskutiert wird, wie sich beides im archäologischen Befund auswirkt und welche Veränderungen der materiellen Kultur im archäologischen Fundgut auf Migrationen hinweisen. Dieses Thema hat auch in der Ägyptologie Raum gewonnen. Dort wurden archäologische Methoden aus der prähistorischen Tradition übernommen, die auf keine Schrift-und Bildquellen zurückgreifen kann. Die Ägyptologie hat aber den Anschluss an die laufende, kritische, theoretische Diskussion der Vor-und Frühgeschichte noch nicht gefunden, wo man von einer Vielfalt von Identitäten und einer indirekten Verbindung zwischen Dingen und Menschen ausgeht. Daher ist in der ägyptischen Archäologie eine Gleichsetzung von Menschen mit bestimmten Gegenständen (z.B. Grabbeigaben) und der daraus resultierenden kulturhistorischen Deutung nach wie vor häufig. Trotz hoher Erwartung an neue Methoden wie aDNA und Isotopenanalysen stellt sich bei zunehmender Publikation von Ergebnissen heraus, dass Gegenstände, die als ethnisch identifizierend betrachtet wurden, nicht immer bei Personen mit einheitlicher DNS gefunden wurden. Kurz gesagt, die Komposition der DNS gibt keine Auskunft darüber, in welcher (ethnischen) Gruppe die Sozialisierung von Menschen stattgefunden hat. Wie in der theoretischen Diskussion zeigt sich, dass die Gegenstände nur indirekt über die Identitäten von antiken Personen Auskunft geben können und sich keine Regel ableiten lässt. Die moderne Forschung ist sich zunehmend dieser Beschränkung bewusst und folgt vielfach der Praxistheorie von Bourdieu, um Einblick in die Identität von Menschen zu erlangen. Im Zusammenhang mit interkulturellen Kontakten wurden Regeln für Akkulturationsmechanismen festgelegt, die auch für archäologische Befunde herangezogen wurden. Dabei hielt man häufig an einer Zuweisung von bestimmten Gegenständen an bestimmte ethnische Identitäten fest (z.B. Schmuck), ohne kreativen Eigenheiten Raum zu geben. Dies ist problematisch und dem kulturhistorischen Paradigma geschuldet, das eine strikte Abgrenzung der einzelnen Kulturen voneinander propagiert. Diese Sichtweise wird ebenfalls mit Blick auf die materielle Kultur Altägyptens kritisiert. Die vorliegende Arbeit versammelt Einzelschriften, die einerseits Aspekte für das Fach Ägyptologie diskutieren, wobei zu bemerken ist, dass das Fach in mancher Hinsicht theoretischen Diskussionen abgeneigt erscheint. Andererseits wird anhand einer Fallstudie aufgezeigt, dass die vorhandenen Quellen oftmals keine eindeutigen Hinweise auf eine (ethnische) Identifikation bieten, besonders wenn die Quellenlage ohne zusätzliche schriftliche oder bildliche Quellen allein auf materieller Kultur beruht. Die Präsenz von Textquellen bringt jedoch häufig auch keine eindeutige Lösung. Die Einleitung widmet sich der Formation der menschlichen Identitätsaspekte und thematisiert sie in Zusammenhang mit verschiedenen Kulturkonzepten. Dann leitet sie zur Praxistheorie über, die ein wichtiges Instrument für das Verständnis der indirekten Verbindung von Dingen zur Identität von Menschen ist. Da in der Archäologie die Identitätsdiskussion häufig mit antiken Migrationen verbunden wird, wird auch dieses Thema berührt. Schließlich wird die Fallstudie-ein Siedlungsteil des späten Mittleren Reiches im Areal A/II in Tell el-Daba (ca. 1800-1700 v. Chr.)-vorgestellt und der historische Rahmen, der immer als Hintergrund für die Interpretation der Funde dieses rein archäologischen Befundes (ohne Schrift-oder Bildzeugnisse) herangezogen wird. This study analyses the Bent Pyramid measurements resulting from the Survey-Data Plan carry out by Sir William Flinders Petrie.
First, these measures suggest that Egyptian builders have planned the characteristic dual slope design, the hypothesis derives mainly from the correspondence between the measurement of the slope relative to the lower part and the height of the upper part of the Pyramid.
But a second hypothesis emerges, very interesting, since the obtuse angle deriving from the two slopes of the Bent Pyramid corresponds to that resulting from the position of the three pyramids on the Gizeh plain.

New archaeological and geological discoveries during last few decades open ways to reinterpret certain historical accounts in Abrahamic sacred texts. One such passage is the narrative of ants and Solomon in Quran. New dimensions opened by science and archaeological discoveries make it possible to look into the matter from a totally different perspective. New researches confirm the view presented by very few in past that Namal (ants) were people involved in collecting ant-gold or placer from sand, alluvial deposits and gravel in and around auriferous sessional streams beds (wadis) in different areas between Palestine and Saba from early Bronze Age to present. Moreover after a careful examination of the available evidence, it could be suggested that Wad-al-Naml and the gold river of the Greek travellers could be one and the same  geographical feature.

Our exhaustive database, which contains approximately 1500 titled individuals known in the provinces, allows us to analyse the social stratification of the provincial elites in the 3rd Millennium BC. This paper focuses especially on the composition of the upper provincial elites as well as on their uneven distribution in the provinces at the end of the Old Kingdom. By analysing the distribution of the rank title jrj-pʿt by province in particular, a correlation can be found with the type of administrative structure.
In this paper, we shall also provide an overview of the mechanisms of social mobility by focusing on the composition of the networks of subordinates who were represented in tombs of high-ranking officials. The detailed analysis of these households contributes to determining the way by which an individual from the provinces reached a high-ranking position in society. It was necessary for these elites to have contact with people of high status and to benefit from resources. This involves analysing the links with central institutions and the Court. The application of SNA (Social Network Analysis) to these data and their visual representation with the software Gephi will help provide an analysis of the integration of the elites within different social networks. By comparing the data coming from the 1st and 14th nomes of Upper Egypt, it is possible to define the degree of integration of these elites within Court society and also to highlight the differences between social and administrative structures by province individually. Lastly, although we generally do not know the precise conditions for the acquisition of rank titles, we shall try to infer the characteristics of social promotion from some royal decrees which were issued to favour some selected provincial elites.

This article is an annex part of our main paper, The Great Pyramid Decoded. We show the message of great simplicity, which was hidden in the very particular geometry of the rhomboid pyramid of Dashour. This discovery, subsequent to our previous works, constitutes today a new proof of their authenticity.
