Egyptian Texts

Die Edition und philologische Erschließung magischer Texte in hieratischer Schrift bilden ein zentrales Forschungsinteresse von Hans-W. Fischer-Elfert, wie er nicht zuletzt in seinem Corpus zu Magika Hieratika in Berlin, Hannover, Heidelberg und München mit all seinen „wits“ aufgezeigt hat. Auch unter dem aus Tebtynis stammenden hieratischen Material der Papyrus Carlsberg Collection in Kopenhagen befinden sich mehrere magische Texte der späten Ptolemäerzeit und vor allem der Römerzeit, deren Ziel der Schutz des Leibes ist.  Hiervon hervorzuheben ist Papyrus Carlsberg 906,  auf den Anweisungen für Zeichnungen niedergeschrieben sind, die begleitet von Rezitationen magischer Sprüche in ihrer Funktion als apotropäische Amulette den Leib „Pharaos“ schützen sollen. Die Abschrift datiert in das ausgehende 1. Jh. v. bis frühe 1. Jh. n. Chr. und steht damit am Ende einer langen Tradition magischer Sprüche zur Abwehr von Feinden und zum Schutz der Lebenden.

Lange Zeit wurden die Ernährungspraktiken des Alten Ägypten wesentlich anhand von schriftlichen, bildlichen und archäobotanischen Quellen diskutiert. Insbesondere die hieratisch beschrifteten Gefäße des Neuen Reichs schienen eine zuverlässige Quelle für die gelagerten und konsumierten Lebensmittel. Zugleich war es aber bislang nicht möglich, alle der hieratischen Inhaltsangaben auch zu verstehen. Ziel unseres Projekts „FoodTransforms. Transformations of Food in the Eastern Mediterranean Late Bronze Age“ ist es unter anderem, mittels chemischer Nahrungsrückstandsanalysen den Zusammenhang zwischen den Inhaltsangaben auf dem Gefäß und den anhand von Rückständen zu identifizierenden Inhalten zu entschlüsseln. Im Rahmen dieses Vortrags möchten wir die Ergebnisse unserer ersten Analyseserien vorstellen, die sich auf die hieratisch beschrifteten Gefäße aus dem Ramesseum und aus Amarna konzentrierte. Unsere Analysen zeigen nicht nur die auch erwarteten Korrelationen zwischen Beschriftung und Inhalt, sondern zudem komplexe Nutzungsbiographien der Objekte und damit verbundene Widersprüche zwischen Beschriftungen und tatsächlichen Inhalten. Dem methodologischen Paradigma der diesjährigen SÄK entsprechend, möchten wir das Potential und die Grenzen naturwissenschaftlicher Nahrungsrückstandsanalysen für das Verständnis von Ernährungs-, Vorrats- und Beschriftungspraktiken im Neuen Reich diskutieren.

This article offers an equation between eyes on false doors and Pyramid Text 534. It is argued, that eyes on false doors are not the eyes of the deceased, but evil eyes, which shall prevent a god or a human being from going through the door. The archaeological remains of false doors with eyes are collected and linked with the evil eyes, which are mentioned in Pyramid Text 534 § 1266c on a double door.
These eyes can be interpreted as magical protection for the tomb of a king or the last resting-place of a
private individual.

Publication d'un fragment de stèle abydénienne conservée dans une collection privée. Le dédicataire, un nommé Nby, que d'autres documents situent à l'époque de Thoutmosis IV, porte divers titres: jmy-r pr [n jpt hmt-nswt (///]) (peut-être Mout-em-ouia), hm-ntr nsmt m 3bdw, hrd n k3p. Ce document apporte des informations nouvelles sur l'organisation du clergé de la barque d'Osiris dès la XVIIIe dynastie, et les principales attestations postérieures sont rapidement évoquées.

The paper deals with a hieratic ostracon from the Ramesside Period, now stored in the MSA magazine at Elkab and probably found in Hagr Edfu. The text is a prayer to Horus and belongs to the literary genre known as the ‘praises of cities’. The first lines present a close parallel to Ostracon Nakhtmin 87/173, obverse, ll. 1–3, found in Theban Tomb 87; the latter bears a prayer to Amun and dates back to Dynasty 18. A comparison of both versions shows how easily such poems could be adapted and how the texts were passed on to later generations. The scribe responsible for the Edfu ostracon was still an apprentice and, in copying an earlier version of his text model, was guilty of a memory slip or deliberately employed a pun or sportive writing.

Certain textual images of Ahhotep II and Ahmose-Nefertiry in stele of Ahmose I illustrate the authority of the principal queen as an active female counterpart of the king during the early 18th Dynasty, perhaps partly inspired by the mythological model of Osiris and Isis. These images may presage the accession of Hatshepsut as king, which can therefore be seen as the outcome of a cultural process rather than as an act of political opportunism. This discussion also draws a parallel between the representation of Ahmose I and Ahmose-Nefertiry in writing on stela Cairo CG 34002 and familiar pictorial images of the king and queen in art of the Amarna Period.

Der Nil bildete mit seinen Nebenflüssen und Kanälen sowie einem weit-
verzweigten System von Landwegen ein zusammenhängendes Transport- und Verkehrsnetz, das eine florierende Wirtschaft ermöglichte. Neben dem Binnenhandel ist zudem seit frühester Zeit ein weitreichender Fernhandel nachzuweisen. Die ägyptische Gesellschaft war überwiegend agrarisch geprägt, und seit der Frühzeit ist ein anwachsender Beamtenstand belegt. Zur Durchführung von staatlichen Bauvorhaben wie Pyramiden oder Tempeln bzw. anderen Arbeitseinsätzen wurde die Bevölkerung seit dem Alten Reich zum
Corvée-Dienst verpflichtet.
Der Vielzahl der Quellen steht eine noch größere Anzahl an Inter-pretationsmöglichkeiten gegenüber. Die folgende kurze Übersicht soll einen Einblick in die Quellen vom Alten bis zum Neuen Reich, die verschiedenen Interpretationen sowie die wichtigsten Publikationen vermitteln.

Since its discovery by Battiscombe Gunn, it is believed that Saqqara's Ostrakon is able to improve our understanding of how Egyptians designed curved elements, but the geometric significance of the hieratic values is still uncertain. Indeed, in order to obtain an indisputable result, the distance between the vertical ordinates is required, and this distance is not explicitly indicated on the limestone artefact.
But since there were no algebraic formulas at the time of the Pharaohs, a simple grid-based procedure was developed such as those used by the Egyptians to reproduce the scale drawings, to try to decipher the geometric meaning of the curve drawn on the find.
To conclude, this simple process permits to understand that the five hieratic values of the Saqqara Ostrakon describe a segmental arch whose span and rise correspond to the architectural proportions of several Egyptian tombs and arches, and that the numerical sequence of the artefact could be considered the most "ancient" mathematical formula of the circle.

This combination of common roots and diverse developments holds a special promise for examining the work of the ancient Egyptian editors of these texts.

This combination of common roots and diverse developments holds a special promise for sampling and examining the work of the ancient Egyptian editors of these texts.
These particular spells furthermore give evidence of two separate domains of origin: partly from the sphere of the king, partly from that of court officials. With these two domains come separate – or perhaps rather: complementary – visions of the Afterlife.

This course offers an introduction to the history of ancient Egypt from the Old Kingdom to Late Antiquity (roughly 3200 BCE to 600 CE), drawing on both source materials and modern works. This is a student-driven seminar based on readings, presentations, and in-class discussions on the societal, religious, and political developments of Egypt in antiquity. Students will become familiar with the Pharaonic, Hellenistic, and Roman periods of Egyptian history. The foundation of this course is Egypt's political history; however, students also will engage the importance of ancient Egyptian geography, culture, literature, religion, art, and gender roles. Through the investigation of texts, architecture, and archaeology, students will gain an appreciation of not just the ruling classes of ancient Egypt, but also of the daily lives of normal Egyptians. This will be a reading seminar course driven primarily by student participation. It will focus mostly on modern studies but also will feature a wide array of literary and archaeological source material. Students will investigate historiographical arguments, lead class discussions, and prepare presentations. This course requires considerable reading, vigorous weekly preparation, and active class participation.
