Egyptian History

The Mesopotamian royal lists give a complete chronology of kings dating back to King Sargon of Akkad (2243-2187). The numerous synchronisms between the Assyrian and Babylonian reigns, as well as the presence during these reigns of several lunar eclipses precisely dated by astronomy, make it possible to reconstitute an absolute chronology that serves as the backbone to anchor all the chronologies of the ancient kingdoms of the Middle East.

Located in the Collège de la Sainte-Famille in Cairo, a 18th century triptych of the Crucifixion painted by the icon painters Ibrāhīm al-Nāsiḫ and Yūḥannā al-Armanī, reveals an interesting art and collections history, from the church of Sitt Barbāra (Old Cairo) to its present location. This icon belonged in particular to Dr G. Baÿ, a close friend of Gaston Maspero's and an important collector in Cairo at the beginning of the 20th century. After his death, the triptych was sold by auction in 1923.

Los estudios de J. Assmann sobre las características que tiene la memoria cultural en las primeras civilizaciones han originado diferentes debates además de haber abierto nuevas líneas de investigación. En este trabajo analizaremos qué se entiende por memoria cultural para, posteriormente, buscar los orígenes de dicha memoria cultural del Egipto Faraónico cuando apareció el Estado y en tiempos predinásticos. Con posterioridad comprobaremos cómo la memoria cultural pervivió en el Egipto faraónico a lo largo de más tres mil años de historia.
Una memoria cultural que se transmitió a través de los textos y, especialmente, de una forma visual con los monumentos, funerarios o no, que transmitían no solo unas creencias funerarias, también una concepción del mundo en el que los antiguos egipcios vivieron. La estrecha relación que existió entre dicha memoria cultural y lo que los antiguos egipcios veían en su entorno explica la perdurabilidad, no solo de sus creencias, también de una civilización que fue capaz de emitir unos mensajes que eran entendidos por todos los miembros de la sociedad.

This article analyzes the diplomatic aspects of Egyptian-North Korean relations, with a brief overview of the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser and with a focus on Anwar el-Sadat’s presidency. On the basis of Hungarian, U.S., and Romanian archival documents, it investigates why the post-1973 reorientation of Egyptian foreign policy toward a pro-American position did not lead to a breakdown of the Egyptian-North Korean partnership. The article describes such episodes as North Korea’s military contribution to the 1973 Arab-Israeli War, Egyptian-North Korean cooperation in the Non-Aligned Movement, Kim Il Sung’s equivocal reactions to the Egyptian-Israeli peace process,
and the militant Arab states’ dissatisfaction with Pyongyang’s unwillingness to condemn the “treacherous” Camp David Accords. It concludes that the main pillars of the Sadat-Kim Il Sung partnership were their simultaneous cooperation with China, their shared enmity for the USSR, and their fear of diplomatic isolation. Still, the North Korean leaders, anxious as they were to prevent an Egyptian-South Korean rapprochement, were more often compelled to adapt to Egypt’s diplomatic preferences than vice versa. The ambivalence, vacillation, prevarication, and opportunism that characterized Pyongyang’s interactions with Cairo belied the common image of North Korea as an iron-willed, militant state cooperating with other revolutionary regimes on the basis of equality, mutual trust, and anti-imperialist solidarity.

July 18, 1970, was another broiling-hot summer day in Egypt. In the skies above the Suez Canal, Egyptian soldiers and the operators of the Soviet surface-to-air-missile batteries, dozens of Israel Air Force fighter jets appeared. It was the start of Operation Etgar, which aimed to put an end to the threat posed by the Soviet weapons, which in the past months had made their way, with their Russian operating technicians, to the canal stubbornly and persistently.

The Demotic Egyptian text known as Papyrus Rylands IX presents a paradigm case for source criticism. On the one hand, Rylands IX is one of precious few Egyptian documents to speak to the political reconstitution of the Egyptian state following the Assyrian conquest of the seventh century BC. On the other hand, the text’s composition is explicitly dated to a period long after the events that it purports to describe, and several features of the text’s narrative have not been verified by external testimony, while still others directly contradict that testimony and raise doubts about the scribe’s intent and his access to reliable information. As a result, an essay published by Anthony Leahy in 2011 has now drawn into question the historicity of Rylands IX’s protagonists, concluding that the text should be classified as “historical fiction.” This paper will explore the possibilities inherent in that classification: I will argue that the fictional elements of Rylands IX do not entirely negate its value as an historical source, because the scribe’s manifest use of archival material and his evident pursuit of verisimilitude may have resulted in the inclusion of certain details from the past that are otherwise unavailable to the historian. To this end, the text’s narrative will then be confronted with a newly published statue that deserves more extended consideration in future discussions of Papyrus Rylands IX.

The report outlines fieldwork conducted on the Eastern Mountain of Gebelein (ancient town of Per-Hathor/Pathyris) in the 2018 season. Despite extensive exploration in the past, the publication record for this area is poor. Current epigraphic research and archaeological field survey, as well as an analysis of published and unpublished archival materials have yielded new data concerning the topography and history of the area, which is presented in this paper.
