Economic Growth

An economic slowdown can have positive as well as negative consequences, especially in relation to the environment, biodiversity and global warming. It creates opportunities as well as problems. The responses of boards and companies can vary. Some can be more socially and environmentally responsible than others. Boards can review corporate purpose, priorities and direction, initiate and/or accelerate transition to more sustainable operations, activities, offerings and business models, and take steps to ensure people are helped and enabled to undertake transition and transformation journeys. There are relatively quick and affordable ways of providing support that can benefit people, organisations and the environment.

Islam is a complete system of life which offers its own social, political and economic systems to guide humanity. Maslahah is one of the Shari'ah objectives. It is fascinated to prohibit or allow something on the basis of whether or not it serves the public well-being. One of the socioeconomic reforms made by Islam that lead to a great Maslahah for the Populace is the prohibition of interest. Nigeria has one of the highest interest rates in the emerging world and it is one of the countries in the world using a greater percentage of its revenues to service public debts. It is a serious event that is giving the politicians, decision makers, prominent thinkers and economists sleepless nights. This study assessed the effect of interest on economic growth and development of Nigeria. The data used herein was secondary data extracted from Central Bank of Nigeria's Statistical Bulletin from 1990 to 2015. The data was analysed using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). The findings of the study show that interest rate has negative effect on economic growth and development of Nigeria. Thus, the paper concludes that interest has translated to distressing effects on the economy through its overcrowding effects on private investments and its constraints on the growth and development of Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that Nigeria government should replace interest-based mode of financing with profit and loss sharing mode of financing, and seek for interest-free fund to finance public project to ensure stability, efficiency and development.

In this paper, we examine the linkage between economic growth and competitiveness on a panel of 28 European countries, during 2006-2013. We use Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) as a measure of national competitive capacities and find that a shock in competitiveness
has a positive impact on GDP developments. Nevertheless, the results show that fast economic growth has a small positive effect on competitiveness, as increasing the competitive capacity of a nation is linked to many other factors such as efficiency gains, better quality of general business environment etc.

The present study aims at identifying the link between economic growth and a wide variety of external competitiveness indicators, related to both price and non-price factors. Using data for European Union, we estimate a series of panel Vector Autoregression (PVAR) models and find that non-price indicators have a higher contribution in explaining GDP developments compared to traditional price and cost based measures of competitiveness. On the other hand, the results underline the broadness of competitiveness concept, as economic growth alone is found not to determine significant effects on the competitive capacity of economies.

El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar el problema de la pobreza y la desigualdad del ingreso en México, en el contexto del proceso de democratización que ha experimentado el país en las tres últimas décadas, utilizando la metodología de crecimiento económico pro-pobre de Kakwani & Pernia (2000); Ravallion (2008) y Ravallion & Chen (2001), así como el llamado efecto igualador de Acemoglu et al. (2013), donde la democratización promueve políticas a favor de los pobres, mejorando la redistribución y reduciendo la desigualdad. Se analiza el periodo 1992-2014, que, en el plano político, marca la transición de no-democracia a la democracia. Los resultados sugieren que el crecimiento económico ha sido a favor de los pobres, aunque no en sentido estricto, pues no se observa mejoramiento de la distribución del ingreso. Abstract. The objective of this investigation is to analyze the problem of poverty and income inequality in Mexico, in the context of the process of democratization that the country has experienced in the last three decades, using the pro-poor economic growth methodology of Kakwani & Pernia (2000); Ravallion (2008) and Ravallion & Chen (2001), as well as the so-called equalizing effect of Acemoglu et al. (2013), where democratization promotes policies in favor of the poor, improving redistribution and reducing inequality. The period 1992-2014 is analyzed, which, in the political sphere, marks the transition from non-democracy to democracy. The results suggest that economic growth has been in favor of the poor, although, not in a strict sense, since there is not an observable improvement of income distribution.

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between defence expenditure and economic growth in G-8 countries and Turkey. First, the definition of defence and defence expenditure, the characteristics of defence expenditure, the definition of economic growth and economic growth models are explained. Then, defence expenditure and the economic growth of these countries between the years 2000-2016 is explained with diagrams. In the last part of the study, the relationship between defence expenditure and economic growth in G-8 countries and Turkey between the years 2000-2016 is examined with the panel data analysis and time series analysis. The results of Durbin-Hausman Co-integration test and Engle-Granger, Co-integration test conducted for G-8 countries and Turkey show that defence expenditure and economic growth series act together in the long run.
According to the results of Dumitrescu-Hurlin Causality test conducted for G-8 countries, no causality relationship has been found between the variables. The results of Toda-Yamamoto and Hacker-Hatemi-J Bootsrap Causality test conducted for Turkey show that there is no two-way causality relationship between growth rate and defence expenditure, and it is concluded that “there is no causality relationship between variables”.

In its widest conceptual scale, growth may be equated to seeking after liberty, a reaching out to the original, latent understanding and experience of freedom, something we first acknowledge because it is in-built within the energy of the creative pulse we all experience.

For most of the global economy, energy has become one of the strategic factors that influence the making of business decisions. In the energy industry, there is a growing demand for innovative, climate-friendly technologies for the production of heat and electricity. As energy becomes a strategic factor in the global competition, it can be an opportunity for the country's competitive advantage. In recent years, Serbia has been taking an increasing share in the use of biomass energy because it understands that biomass has both economic and environmental benefits of energy exploitation. According to the available data, almost half of the primary energy needs in Serbia could be from the potential of renewable energy.
