Economic Crisis

In her fifth dystopian novel, The Heart Goes Last, Margaret Atwood portrays North America in the not so far future, in the wake of a global economic crisis. Parts of the country are in the state of complete chaos, subjected to a ruthless gang rule. The solution to the system's breakdown comes in the form of the socio-economic experiment that requires from its participants relinquishing their freedom as every other month they will spend in prison. The seemingly preposterous experimental project enables Atwood to explore principal questions about the limits of our freedom in the times of an economic crisis or a neoliberal model of economy. The satirical form the novel takes, especially towards its end, helps the writer to decry people's over-willingness to give away their freedom and civil liberties in exchange for happy, uninterrupted consumption. The following article aims to demonstrate that the notion of freedom and free will permeate The Heart Goes Last, which is, in that respect, a politically and socially engaged satire.

Noul guvern are un calendar de reducere a deficitului bugetar, de la 9,8 % din PIB (2002) la 2,9 % (2024), dupa ce 2020, aproape unul din patru lei cheltuiți de statul român a provenit din datorie, purtătoare de dobândă și care trebui plătită. (1.) In România cea mai mare parte a deficitului este structurală și datează dinaintea pandemiei. Respectiva deteriorare a avut loc în condițiile unei creșteri economice peste potențial, care ar fi trebuit să ducă la reducerea deficitului bugetar și la transformarea sa în excedent, nicidecum la creșterea lui. Așa se explică că România a întâmpinat pandemia cu un spațiu fiscal inexistent și că numai suspendarea Pactului de Stabilitate și Creștere a permis ca singurul stat sub Procedura de deficit Excesiv, să nu fie penalizat. (2.) România trece acum printr-o consolidare fiscal-bugetară, după cea din 2010-2015, fără să a fi învățat din acea experiență. (3.) Modalitatea prin care se propune a se face consolidarea bugetară în cadrul Strategiei fiscal-bugetare 2021-2023, este prin ținerea sub control a cheltuielilor bugetare și deloc prin creșterea veniturilor. The article is devoted to the analysis of major trends in innovation activities in Russia before and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Its particular focus is a discussion of a new post-crisis model of innovation policies in the context of institutional peculiarities of the national innovation system. The article is based on the findings of the studies undertaken by the authors and describes major challenges and opportunities for more efficient policy regulation, including both supply and demand sides. It also initiates a discussion on a social dimension of innovation and allied priorities and instruments for the public innovation policy in Russia.

This article explains how the Hellenic Statistical Authority ELSTAT twisted data in order to reduce the decline of the nominal 2020 GDP from -11,6% to -8.6%. To arrive to this result ELSTAT "revised" the nominal GDP of 2019 from 187,5 billion to 183,4 billion euros. This is a revision of over 4 billion euros or 2,5% of the GDP. This thesis studies the dynamics of the existence and expansion of MNCs and TNCs, as the representatives of global capital, in the TRNC within the context of embargoes and non-recognition in the international area. By this way, a better understanding will be provided on what mechanisms the MNCs/TNCs use to expand their operations all over the world. In this regard, the main research questions of this thesis are; ‘What are the dynamics of the existence and expansion of global capital in the forms of MNCs and TNCs in the TRNC as an unrecognized state?’ and ‘How, and by using which tools and mechanisms do the MNCs and the TNCs exist, evolve, operate, and expand their capital in the TRNC market?’. By using a Marxist theoretical framework, this thesis hypothesizes that global capital would expand to any territory, including unrecognized, quasi-legal states, to overcome its crisis. Therefore, the mechanisms, tools, and processes used by the MNCs/TNCs in their operating processes within the TRNC, and the dynamics and the forces behind investing in the TRNC despite the risks of illegality were investigated by conducting a field study. The field study was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews and cross-sectional surveys based on a sampling that consists of nine 
participants who are representing thirteen establishments of thirteen different MNCs/TNCs operating in the TRNC. The findings of this research support the hypothesis and show that the MNCs and the TNCs use extraordinary tools and mechanisms in order to expand and legalize their investments in the TRNC.

This paper investigates capital flight from Thailand to the US through trade misinvoicing during the period from 1990 to 2005. The evidence indicates that capital flight from Thailand to the US, valued over US$16,189 million, had been done through under-invoicing exports to the US rather than over-invoicing imports from the US. The major incentive for the movement of capital is investment, followed by political events in Thailand, and the most significant determinants of capital flight are the US T-bill rate, the deposit rate in Thailand, and the degree of overvaluation of the Thai Baht. Interestingly, the 1997 Asian economic crisis did not play a significant role in the capital movement through trade.

Cargo shipping, as emblematic stand-in for globalization, peddles a seductive imagery of frictionless transnational trade and just-in-time logistics. Backed by the normative might of transnational institutions, instruments such as UNCTAD's Automated System for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) are being rolled out across "developing countries, " promising the rationalization, acceleration, and "dematerialization" of customs processing, while countries themselves introduce effi ciency reforms to smoothen the fl ow of goods. Th is article charts the intensive work required to produce this fantasy of frictionless trade around the Atlantic port of Lobito, Angola. In a context where imports have dropped by 50 percent to 60 percent since 2014 due to lower oil prices, this article traces how actors involved in making this import-dependent economy work deal with the seeming failure of promises of transnationally connected economic growth.
