This is a German translation of my paper "As Pilhas de Pesos de Dom Manuel I: Contributo para a sua Caracterização, Inventariação e Avaliação", Portugalia: Nova Série, vol. 39, 2018, p. 217-251. Many thanks to Rolf Laufkoetter, Ludwig Ramacher and Ludwig Wieprecht for their enthusiasm and effort in preparing this translation.

The chapter is divided into five parts. The first one examines the place of Portugal within the European and colonial trade flows in conjunction with domestic economy. The second part deals with population dynamics giving particular emphasis on migration to the Empire. The third part shows the composition of agricultural production, identifying continuities, innovations and constraints and the fourth describes some of the trends of agricultural production articulated with market income. The last one approaches the institutional framework constraints of agriculture, namely ownership and taxation.

Summary
When the economy in Staats-Brabant declined after 1713, town governments had to cut expenditure and try to enlarge their income. This appeared to be a nasty business, because vested interests defended their position and a large part of expenditure could not be lowered. This article, mainly based on the city archive of 's-Hertogenbosch, the most important town of Staats-Brabant, gives a detailed description of measures, plans en resistance against 'new things'.

Summary
Article in a reader published by NEHA in 1999. The tekst was digitized and revised in 2017 by me. I compared two entrepreneurs operating in Breda, a town in the northern part of the duchy of Brabant and belonging to the Republic of the United Provinces. Johan Gerritsz. de Wyse was a very succesfull merchant and a soap maker, Jakob Beens a notary. Being Roman Catholics they were not admitted to the governmental elite of Breda. Johan spread his commercial interests, Jakob focussed on converting sterile heath grounds into arable land. When Johan died in 1725 he was a wealthy man, when Jakob did so in 1673 he was bankrupt. The difference was their network, their social capital. Johan and his brother Cornelis entertained a good relation with the prince of Orange and his counsellors and with the countess of Hoogstraten. Due to this good contacts Johan received an order to finish the palace of the prince of Orange in Breda which was very profitable to him and managed to found a monastery of the Capucin Friars in Meersel-Dreef a village just across the border between the Republic and the Spanish Netherlands. Jakob got into conflict with the peasants who resisted his plans to convert the heath and other incultivated lands. Lawsuits cost a lot of money and did not have any results. Due to a lack of dung and other fertilizers the heath stayed heath or had to be converted into woods. Tekst of the article: Dutch.
